Clean your juicer as soon as you finish using it: switch it off, unplug it as directed by its manual, take apart the removable pieces, and rinse away pulp before it dries. Use a soft brush on the mesh screen and other pulp-trapping areas. To reduce clogs while juicing, feed produce gradually, avoid excessive pressure, and follow your model’s instructions if a blockage occurs.
How to clean a juicer after each use
- Switch off and unplug it. Follow the safety steps in your juicer’s manual before disassembly or cleaning. Philips specifically says to switch off its juicer before cleaning a blocked filter; its manual may specify additional model-specific steps. (Philips blocked-filter guidance; Philips juicer manual)
- Disassemble the removable parts according to the manual. Avoid forcing pieces apart. For KitchenAid’s Juice and Sauce Attachment, the cleaning instructions describe separating the screen, wiper basket, and pulp chute. Other models may come apart differently. - Rinse off loose pulp promptly. Rinse the screen, filter, and pulp-prone parts before residue dries. Breville says the filter basket and blades can accumulate fibers and fine pulp that may clog the machine over time. (Breville’s juicer cleaning guidance)
- Brush the mesh and crevices gently. Use a soft juicer cleaning brush with water, or warm soapy water where the manufacturer permits it. Pay particular attention to the fine holes in the filter, where fibers and small pulp pieces can lodge. - Check that the screen is clear. Look for pulp still caught in the mesh after rinsing and brushing. Breville advises checking the fine mesh holes; a KitchenAid KVJ0333OB manual excerpt recommends holding the screen toward a light to check whether its holes are clear. - Clean the motor or drive assembly only as instructed. Some parts must not be immersed. KitchenAid says not to wash or immerse the drive assembly for its attachment; Philips says to wipe the main unit with a moist cloth for the model covered by its guidance. - Check dishwasher rules for each part. Compatibility differs by model and component. For example, KitchenAid says parts of its Juice and Sauce Attachment, except the drive assembly, are top-rack dishwasher safe. Moulinex gives separate care instructions and exceptions for its JUICE & CLEAN ZU420E10. Do not assume those rules apply to another juicer. How to reduce clogs while juicing
- Feed produce gradually. Philips advises slow insertion and, for the models covered by its guidance, feeding one piece at a time. KitchenAid also recommends feeding one piece at a time for its Juice and Sauce Attachment. (Philips blocked-filter guidance; KitchenAid juicing tips)
- Do not force the pusher. Philips cautions against exerting too much pressure. Pressing harder is not a substitute for letting the juicer process produce at its intended pace. (Philips blocked-filter guidance)
- Pay attention to fibrous produce and pulp buildup. Philips identifies fiber as a factor that can block sieve holes. On its attachment, KitchenAid recommends alternating celery with other produce to reduce pulp buildup. These are model- and produce-specific tips, not a universal recipe for every juicer. - Use ripe produce that is not overripe. Moulinex notes that overripe fruit can clog the filter more quickly on its JUICE & CLEAN model. (Moulinex JUICE & CLEAN ZU420E10 support)
- Clean between batches if fibers are accumulating. Philips recommends cleaning the sieve between juicings in the situations covered by its support guidance. A rinse and brush before pulp dries can make residue easier to remove. (Philips blocked-filter guidance; Philips guidance on moist pulp)
What to do if the juicer filter gets blocked
Stop feeding ingredients and use the clearing procedure in the manual for your exact model. Philips’ UK guidance for its covered juicers says to switch off, clean the feeding tube and filter, then process smaller quantities. (Philips blocked-filter guidance, published March 8, 2022)
Do not assume every machine should be reversed or restarted in the same way. KitchenAid describes an OFF-then-REV jam-clearing action for its Juice and Sauce Attachment; that sequence is attachment-specific. Why prompt cleaning makes a difference
Pulp and fibers can lodge in fine mesh openings, and dried residue is harder to rinse away than fresh pulp. Breville describes fibers and fine fruit and vegetable pulp accumulating on the filter basket and blades, while a KitchenAid manual excerpt warns that dried pulp can clog a fine-mesh screen.
