Turn off and disconnect your gaming mouse before cleaning. Wipe its shell with a barely damp, soft cloth, keep liquid away from the sensor and openings, and let the mouse dry completely before using it again. Clean the feet gently; replace them only when worn or damaged, and choose feet made for your exact mouse model.
What you need before you start
- A soft, lint-free cloth, such as a microfiber cloth.
- A toothpick for exterior crevices, if needed, used carefully and never on the sensor or inside the mouse.
- A handheld blower or compressed air for dry debris, if appropriate for your manufacturer’s instructions.
Check the care instructions for your specific mouse and finish. Logitech, Razer, and SteelSeries give model- and material-dependent advice, so no single cleaning liquid is safe for every shell or set of feet.
How to clean a gaming mouse

Power it down
Unplug a wired mouse. Switch off a wireless mouse and remove removable AA or AAA batteries where applicable. Logitech advises switching off and waiting 5–10 seconds before cleaning; SteelSeries likewise says to unplug or switch off the mouse and remove removable batteries.

Wipe the shell
Lightly moisten the cloth rather than spraying the mouse. Logitech’s guidance permits tap water or lens cleaner on a lightly moistened cloth for its devices. SteelSeries recommends a clean cloth and warm water, with mild dish detergent reserved for spot-cleaning oil. Use as little moisture as possible and keep it out of seams, buttons, and openings.

Clear crevices and the sensor area
For exterior nooks, SteelSeries suggests a toothpick, but warns against using it on the optical sensor lens or inside the mouse. For dry debris around the sensor, Razer allows a handheld blower or compressed air and says not to use liquid on the sensor because it may cause permanent damage. SteelSeries also lists canned air and advises keeping the can upright to avoid expelling liquid.

Clean the feet gently
Mouse feet, also called skates or pads, are the contact pieces on the underside that glide over the mouse pad. Remove visible dust or debris gently without scraping the skate surface. Razer recommends cleaning mouse feet regularly for the best possible glide. The reviewed manufacturer instructions do not establish one universal liquid or chemical recipe for cleaning skate surfaces, so avoid applying an unapproved cleaner.

Leave it disconnected until it is fully dry before reconnecting or using it.
Which cleaners are safe?
Do not assume that alcohol or a household cleaner is safe for every mouse. Logitech’s general device guidance warns against bleach, acetone or nail-polish remover, strong solvents, and abrasives. It describes certain alcohol swabs below 25% concentration for mice, but that does not establish that alcohol is safe for every coating or skate.

SteelSeries warns that alcohol may damage paint, printed details, and protective coatings. Its exception is specific: alcohol wipes may be used on the contact surface after old feet have been removed, when preparing to install new ones. Follow your mouse maker’s instructions rather than treating that installation advice as routine cleaning guidance. Razer’s warning against liquid applies specifically to the sensor; its separate mouse-mat cleaning advice should not be transferred to mouse feet.
When to replace mouse feet
Cleaning can remove loose debris, but it cannot restore worn material. Consider replacement if feet are visibly worn, damaged, peeling, or no longer sit flat. This is a practical condition-based recommendation, not a manufacturer-published replacement interval.

Choose feet made for the exact mouse model. Razer says aftermarket PTFE, glass, or ceramic feet are acceptable if fitting them does not damage the mouse; it also says it does not sell feet as a standalone spare part. That does not mean all materials feel the same or that any set will fit any mouse. SteelSeries describes its own 100% PTFE glide skates as pure PTFE without additives or color, a material with a low coefficient of friction; this is not a specification for every gaming mouse.
