To get rid of a musty smell in a front-load washer, clean the door-gasket folds and detergent drawer, check and clean the drain-pump filter only if your manual explains how, then run the washer’s dedicated tub-cleaning cycle with a cleaner approved for your model. To keep the smell from returning, remove laundry promptly, let the door and drawer dry open when safe, and use the correct amount of HE detergent.
Clean the parts where moisture and residue collect
Start with the washer empty. Follow your owner’s manual for any cleaning products or removable parts; access and instructions vary by model. Never mix cleaning products.
1. Wipe the door gasket
Pull back the gasket folds gently and look for lint, hair, detergent residue, or trapped objects. Wipe the folds with a soft cloth or sponge and a cleaner the manual allows. Wipe away any remaining cleaner as directed, then dry the creases carefully. Whirlpool describes a diluted-bleach method for stubborn gasket staining, but that is not a universal instruction; use bleach only if your washer manual and the product label allow it, and follow the label’s protection and handling instructions. 2. Clean the detergent drawer
If the drawer is designed to come out, remove and rinse it according to the manual. Wipe residue from the drawer cavity as well as the drawer itself, then reinstall it as directed. Some cold washes may leave detergent less completely dissolved, according to LG’s odor and buildup guidance; follow the detergent label and your washer’s instructions.

3. Check the drain-pump filter only when the manual shows how
Not every model has a user-accessible filter, and removal procedures differ. If your washer has one, use the manual’s drain and filter-cleaning procedure. Removing a filter can release water, so prepare for that only as the manual instructs. A clogged filter can interfere with draining and leave water behind, as noted by Panasonic’s drain-filter guidance.
4. Run the washer’s cleaning cycle
Select the cycle named Clean Washer, Tub Clean, or its equivalent, and use a cleaner approved for your exact washer and cycle. Follow the product label and the manual’s directions for quantity and placement. Whirlpool describes its Clean Washer cycle with washer cleaner, bleach, or another washer-cleaning product; that guidance applies to Whirlpool machines, not automatically to other brands. Whirlpool’s cleaning-cycle instructions and Samsung Canada’s drum-cleaning guide both direct users to model-specific instructions.

Prevent the musty smell from coming back
- Remove wet laundry promptly after a cycle so it does not sit in the damp drum.
- When safe and practical, leave the door and detergent drawer open after washing to let moisture evaporate. Do not leave the door open if it creates a hazard or your washer’s instructions advise otherwise.
- Wipe moisture and debris from the gasket, especially its folds.
- Use HE detergent when required, and measure the amount specified for your load, detergent, and washer. Excess detergent can contribute to residue.
- Follow the manual’s maintenance schedule and run the cleaning cycle at the interval it recommends.
Schedules differ by brand and model. As examples, Whirlpool recommends cleaning approximately monthly, and LG recommends running its tub-clean cycle monthly. Panasonic’s Myanmar-market guidance recommends cleaning the drawer weekly, the tub and gasket every two months, and the drain filter monthly; it notes that frequency can vary with use. These are manufacturer examples, not a single schedule for every washer. Whirlpool, LG, and Panasonic publish their respective recommendations. Samsung Canada also cautions that features, cycles, and settings vary by model and country, so consult the manual for your machine.

Check that the drawer and filter have been cleaned as the manual permits, and run the approved tub-clean cycle again according to its instructions. If odor returns, verify detergent quantity and HE compatibility. Also check the drain-hose installation against the installation instructions where applicable: GE warns that a hose inserted too far into a standpipe can siphon water back into the washer.
