For a 1080p, 30 fps YouTube Live stream, YouTube’s current English-language encoder guidance recommends 14 Mbps for H.264 or 10 Mbps for AV1 or H.265/HEVC. In OBS, use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, then test whether your connection can sustain the chosen bitrate. These are YouTube’s recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular internet connection will deliver a stable stream.
Which bitrate should you use for 1080p30?
Choose the row for the codec you are sending to YouTube. The figures below are from YouTube’s current English-language live encoder guidance, retrieved October 4, 2026.
| Ingestion codec | YouTube-listed minimum | YouTube-recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| AV1 | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| H.265 / HEVC | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| H.264 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
These are platform guidance values for 1080p at 30 fps, not independently measured performance results. YouTube advises selecting a quality your connection can stream reliably. If you are unsure, test the recommended setting and reduce it if OBS reports dropped frames or YouTube reports stream-health problems. YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate table

Set encoder bitrate and keyframes
In OBS, open Settings > Output, select the streaming output settings, and set the video bitrate to the value for your selected codec in the table above. Use CBR (constant bitrate) and a 2-second keyframe interval. YouTube says not to exceed a four-second keyframe interval. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS as live protocols and recommends RTMPS.

The exact encoder controls available depend on the encoder and OBS version you use. Confirm that the chosen encoder actually sends the intended codec; do not assume the bitrate row changes automatically when you switch encoders. YouTube’s settings guidance covers supported live encoder formats and protocols: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Check whether your upload connection can sustain it
A speed test is a useful starting point, but a single upload-speed result does not prove that a connection will hold a live stream steadily. The connection, route to the ingest server, and time of day can affect stability; no universal stable bitrate for every household or ISP route is established here.

- Test upload capacity using YouTube’s recommended approach, and choose a bitrate your connection can sustain with headroom rather than treating the speed-test result as a guarantee.
- Run a private or otherwise appropriate test stream before the real broadcast, using motion and audio similar to what you plan to stream.
- Watch YouTube’s stream-health messages and OBS’s dropped-frame behavior during the test.
- If dropped frames or connection warnings appear, investigate stability and try lowering the video bitrate; do not assume resolution alone is the cause.
YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health. OBS explains that dropped frames can indicate an unstable connection to the remote server or an inability to keep up with the configured bitrate, and recommends lowering bitrate as one troubleshooting measure. OBS stream connection troubleshooting
Troubleshoot common bitrate problems
- OBS drops frames: Check connection stability and reduce the configured video bitrate if needed. Repeat the test under representative conditions.
- YouTube reports poor stream health: Review the encoder settings, bitrate, and connection; test again while monitoring YouTube’s messages.
- The picture is not actually 1080p30: Recheck OBS’s output-scaled resolution and FPS settings. A 1080p canvas does not by itself establish a 1080p output.
- You changed codecs but kept the old bitrate: Recheck YouTube’s codec-specific recommendation. Its listed 1080p30 recommendation differs between H.264 and AV1/H.265.
- A speed test looks sufficient but the stream still stutters: The test result does not establish sustained stream stability. Retest while live and lower bitrate if the symptoms persist.
Or let it run in the cloud
