Choose a main damage dealer whose combat style you enjoy, then build a three-Resonator team around the character’s kit: a partner whose Intro and Outro effects fit the rotation, and sustain when the content calls for it. There is no universally best first pick established for October 2026; your roster, play style, and the characters you can reasonably build matter more than a generic tier list.
What makes a Wuthering Waves team balanced?
A party has three Resonators, but only one is active on the field at a time. A team works through switching: when the relevant Concerto condition is met, the outgoing Resonator can trigger an Outro Skill and the incoming one an Intro Skill. Those effects may provide buffs, setup, or damage, so the order and timing of your rotation matter—not just the three names on the team screen. Kuro Games describes the combat as “Fast Pace Action”, “Visually Appealing Combat Representation”, and “Strategy Oriented Team Building” in its Developer’s Notes – Combat System. The notes explain that Concerto Energy can be accumulated through attacks, skills, Echo Abilities, and other actions to activate Concerto Effects.
For a first team, think in terms of jobs rather than a rigid formula:
- Main damage dealer: The character you expect to spend the most time using to deal damage.
- Partner or enabler: A Resonator whose skills, damage, or switch effects help the main character’s plan.
- Sustain: A healer or other way to stay alive, if the encounter or your comfort level makes it useful.
Not every team needs three different elements, and a character’s element alone does not establish synergy. Check the actual skills and switch effects. The six damage elements are Glacio, Fusion, Electro, Aero, Spectro, and Havoc; weapon types—Broadblade, Gauntlets, Pistols, Rectifier, and Sword—indicate which weapons a Resonator can equip and offer a broad clue to combat style.

How to choose a first character
Start with the Resonators you already have, including characters available through the game’s missions or events. You do not need to assume that spending money or rerolling is required. Compare likely candidates on the factors that affect both enjoyment and how quickly you can make a functional team.
| What to compare | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Combat feel | Do you enjoy the weapon feel, combos, and amount of time this character spends on the field? |
| Role and rotation | Can this Resonator serve as your main damage dealer, and do their Intro/Outro effects work with a partner you own? |
| Account fit | Does this character fill a missing role, or duplicate the job of someone you have already built? |
| Build demands | Can you obtain a compatible weapon and the needed ascension, Forte, and Echo resources without spreading early investment too thin? |
| Energy and execution | Can you meet the character’s energy needs and reliably perform the rotation they rely on? |
| Content and currentness | Does the character suit the content you want to clear, and are the build and teammate recommendations current for the game version you play? |
A character you like who fills a real gap in your roster can be a better practical first choice than a popular pick that you do not enjoy or cannot support. Rarity, element matching by itself, and an undated tier list are not enough to make the decision.

How to assemble and practice the team
- Choose the main damage dealer. Select a character whose combat style you want to learn and whose build requirements are within reach.
- Check the character’s current guide. Use the official Kuro Games guide portal or a reputable current character guide. Note field-time needs, damage type, preferred partner effects, energy requirements, and weapon type.
- Add a partner for the rotation. Look for a teammate whose Outro effect supports the next character and whose Intro effect or other kit benefits from the planned switch. Read the specific skill descriptions rather than assuming that two matching elements make a strong pair.
- Add sustain if it helps you clear reliably. Include a healer or other sustain option when an encounter demands it or survivability is limiting your progress. The exact need depends on the content and your execution.
- Practice the switch sequence. Use the setup skills the rotation needs, switch when the Concerto condition is met, and take advantage of the incoming character’s window. Avoid leaving the main damage dealer idle after support effects have expired.
- Build one functional team first. Focus resources on the characters and roles you will actually use. Revisit the roster when content calls for multiple teams or a new character fills a genuine gap.
What to upgrade first
Character investment includes levels and ascension, Forte upgrades, weapons, and Echoes. Concentrate on the core damage plan before trying to perfect several characters at once:

- Level and ascend the main damage dealer, then upgrade the Forte nodes that matter for that character’s damage plan.
- Equip a usable weapon compatible with the Resonator’s weapon type.
- Build the partner and sustain to the point that their role in the rotation works; prioritize their needs according to the chosen characters’ guides.
- Use Echoes as equipment, not physical accessories. They add stats and an active ability. The beginner guide describes five Echo slots, COST limits, and Echo classes; consult a character-specific build guide before spending tuning materials.
Exact Forte priorities, Echo choices, and resource costs depend on the character and the game version. For example, the Scoutflies beginner guide is labeled Version 3.5 and dated July 16, 2026; its named reroll, banner, or progression recommendations should not be treated as current October 2026 advice without a newer patch source.

Keep using a workable team while it clears the content you care about. Reconsider its composition when you identify a concrete problem: a missing sustain option, a partner whose effects do not fit the rotation, a main damage dealer you do not enjoy using, or a new content requirement such as building multiple teams. Before committing scarce resources or changing a build, check current character and teammate guidance; rankings, banners, selectors, and balance recommendations can change between versions.
