When several games launch in one week, buy first the one that best fits your interests and that you realistically expect to play soon—not simply the one with the loudest launch campaign. Then verify its platform, regional release details, edition contents, access options and refund terms before paying.
How to rank games competing for your attention
Use the same checks for every game on your shortlist. A simple comparison helps separate genuine enthusiasm from launch-week pressure.

- Start with personal fit. Compare each game’s genre, premise and appeal with what you actually enjoy. Marketing visibility or online discussion does not make a game the right choice for you.
- Be realistic about play time. Ask whether you have the time and energy to start each game soon. A title you are excited to play with friends or discuss while it is new may deserve priority; one that will retain its appeal later can wait.
- Check platform and timing. Confirm the exact platform you use and the release details for your region on the official store listing. A date on a general calendar does not guarantee a particular local release time or that the game is available on your system.
- Compare what you get and how you can access it. Review edition contents, platform features, physical or digital availability, and whether the specific game is included in a subscription catalogue. Do not assume that a subscription provides access just because the service has a game catalogue.
- Consider purchase risk. If you are unsure, waiting for reviews or technical coverage can give you more information. Before pre-ordering, check the store’s cancellation and refund rules for your country and purchase circumstances.
Verify the release on your platform
Store pages can appear before a game is purchasable or playable, and release timing can differ by title and region. Microsoft’s publishing documentation distinguishes when a product page becomes discoverable from when customers can acquire or download the product: Microsoft Store release-date guidance. Use the official listing for the platform and market where you intend to buy.
Steam
Steam says a pre-order may be refunded at any time before release. If the purchase includes Advance Access, the refund request must be made before Advance Access starts; standard refund rules apply after it begins. Check Steam’s refund policy for the applicable terms.

PlayStation Store in the United States
Under the US PlayStation Store policy, games and add-ons can be canceled within 14 days of purchase if downloading or streaming has not started. Once it has started, they are generally not eligible for cancellation unless the content is faulty. Digital pre-order cancellation timing depends on how far in advance the order was placed, and automatic downloads may occur if enabled. These are US terms; consult the policy for your own market at PlayStation Store cancellation policy.
Nintendo eShop
Nintendo says the publisher decides the exact eShop release time, which varies by title. In the US, digital-only releases are usually available at 9:00 a.m. Pacific on release day; titles also sold physically are usually available at 9:00 p.m. Pacific the previous night. Exceptions include some third-party releases. Nintendo’s US support page also says pre-order payment is processed no sooner than seven days before release, and cancellation is possible before payment processing and preloading. Why a scheduled date is not a guarantee
A 2022 study by University of Alberta ASGAARD lab researchers examined 23,485 Steam games. Among games in the study with concrete release dates, 48% delayed their initial release; for games that did delay, the median delay was 14 days. These are historical findings about that Steam sample, not a prediction for today’s launches or other storefronts. Treat a date as a plan to verify, especially when coordinating with friends or choosing between time-sensitive releases. The paper is available at arXiv.

For each contender, check the official listing for your chosen platform. Compare only differences that matter to how you play: included content, platform-specific features, and whether the edition costs more for extras you want. If you prefer a physical copy, confirm that a physical version exists for your platform and is available where you shop; if you prefer digital, check the store listing and any relevant storage or download requirements.

Also check whether a subscription catalogue includes the exact game and whether access applies to your plan and platform. Subscription catalogues and physical and digital purchase formats are distinct ways games may be distributed, but availability for a particular upcoming title must be confirmed rather than assumed. A quick decision when you still cannot choose
- Choose now if one game is a clear personal favorite, you expect to play it soon, and you have verified the right platform and purchase terms.
- Wait if you are uncertain about quality, performance, release timing or whether you will have time to play. Waiting can also let you compare reviews and technical coverage.
- Defer a game if it interests you but has no particular urgency for your schedule. A crowded launch week does not require buying every promising release immediately.
- Do not pre-order on assumptions about local unlock time, subscription access, edition bonuses or refunds. Confirm each detail on the relevant store page or policy first.
