Start with the profile recommended for your exact printer, ink, RIP software, and media family, then validate it on a sample of the actual substrate. There is no universal UV printer recipe: the right mode and settings depend on the machine, surface, desired finish, and how the finished print will be used.
Why UV printer settings vary by material and job
A successful setup balances image quality, production speed, adhesion, curing, finish, and the durability the job requires. A profile that works on one supplier’s acrylic may not work on another supplier’s acrylic, because surface finish and material formulation vary. Printer-specific modes and options also differ, so settings from one machine should not be transferred to another.
For example, HP describes Billboard as the fastest mode on its Designjet H35000, H45000, and ColorSpan 5400uv series, suitable for larger pieces viewed at a distance, while Production balances speed and quality. HP also warns that anomalies in Billboard output may be visible at close range. These are examples for those printer families, not universal mode names or recommendations. Choose the settings in a controlled workflow
1. Establish a machine-specific baseline
Record the printer model, firmware, RIP, ink family, substrate manufacturer and finish, material thickness, print distance or head clearance, and intended use. Load the printer or ink maker’s profile for the closest documented media. Keep a copy of the baseline settings so you can identify the effect of later changes.

2. Prioritize the viewing distance and output need
Use the same artwork and material to compare supported modes. A fast, production-oriented mode may suit large graphics viewed from a distance. Fine text, close viewing, or detailed imagery may call for a higher-quality mode. Judge the result at the distance where the finished work will actually be seen, and account for throughput needs.
3. Prepare and test the substrate
- Use materials intended for graphic-arts printing when available.
- Follow the printer maker’s cleaning instructions; keep the surface clean, dry, and free of dust, oils, and static.
- Handle sheets carefully to avoid transferring fingerprints.
- Print a representative sample from the actual batch before committing to a bulk order.
HP notes that media can vary even within a category and that smoother, nonporous surfaces can be more challenging for adhesion. A successful test on one supplier’s glass, acrylic, or plastic does not guarantee the same result on another supplier’s material. See HP’s UV-curable ink adhesion guidance.

If adhesion is poor, first verify that the substrate is suitable, prepared correctly, and compatible with the ink system. A primer or adhesion promoter may help some combinations, but it is not universal; test it with the exact printer, ink, and material, and complete any required pretreatment process before evaluating the print.
4. Add white or varnish only when the result calls for it
On printers that support these inks, white can provide an opaque base on dark or transparent media, while clear varnish can create gloss or texture. Decide whether the job needs a white underlayer, spot white, varnish, or no special layer. These layers use additional ink and may affect production. Follow the layer order supported by the specific printer and RIP rather than copying another model’s setup. 5. Treat curing as part of the complete system
Use the cure settings specified by the printer and ink makers for the exact combination. For relevant UV-curing equipment, Marabu identifies lamp condition, reflector cleanliness, correct focus and distance to the substrate, and transport speed as factors to check. Marabu’s guidance is for UV-curable screen-printing inks, not a digital printer profile, but it explains why curing should be assessed alongside ink and surface conditions.
A tacky print or poor adhesion does not automatically mean that UV exposure should be increased. Marabu notes that poor curing can cause adhesion failure, but incorrect ink choice, poor ink application, or inadequate surface pretreatment can also be responsible. Increasing cure effectiveness alone may not resolve those problems and can make the ink film brittle. See Marabu’s UV-curing and auxiliaries guidance.

6. Evaluate and document the sample
Inspect color, sharpness, banding, registration, surface appearance, adhesion, and cure. When appropriate, use the ink maker’s prescribed crosshatch-tape adhesion procedure after the print has cured and cooled. Marabu recommends this test for its ink film after curing and cooling; follow the method and tape requirements for the materials you use.
A small adhesion screen does not establish long-term performance in sunlight, abrasion, cleaners, handling, or a particular environment. Test the durability the actual application needs. Marabu’s technical data for UVGL also advises preliminary trials because printability can vary between materials, even within a substrate type; see the UVGL technical data sheet.

Keep a job record containing the material supplier and finish, printer and ink, RIP and profile, mode, pass or resolution selection, white or varnish plan, cure settings, pretreatment, and observed results. Change one variable at a time and save a successful profile for that exact combination.

Troubleshoot by checking the whole setup
- Weak adhesion: confirm media and ink compatibility, surface cleaning, and any required pretreatment before changing cure settings.
- Tacky or poorly cured print: verify the specified cure setup and check relevant equipment conditions, including lamp condition, reflector cleanliness, focus, distance, and transport speed.
- Unwanted texture, opacity, or gloss: review whether white or varnish is required and verify the layer plan is supported by the printer and RIP.
- Good results on one material but not another: treat the second material as a new combination and run a fresh sample test; supplier and finish differences can matter even within the same broad material category.
