Set your soldering iron to the lowest temperature that forms a sound joint promptly. The right setting depends on the solder alloy, tip, joint size and heat loss, the iron’s thermal recovery, and the parts being soldered—not just whether the job is a wire, connector, or circuit board. There is no single temperature chart that applies to every setup.

Setpoint and solder melting temperature are different

The solder’s melting range describes the alloy, not the temperature to dial into your iron. The tip has to transfer enough heat into the joint for the solder to melt and wet the surfaces. HAKKO’s guidance relates solder melting point, tip temperature, and iron setpoint as a rule of thumb, not a universal formula for every iron, tip, and workpiece. HAKKO’s tip-oxidation guidance explains why the setpoint should be kept as low as practical.

For example, HAKKO lists a solidus-to-liquidus range of 183–215°C for its FS-321 leaded Sn-Pb 50% solder. That range is an alloy specification; it does not mean the iron should be set to 183°C, 215°C, or any other fixed value. Check the solder maker’s information for the alloy you are using. HAKKO’s HEXSOL solder information lists solder types and their solidus and liquidus temperatures.

What changes the temperature a job needs?

Two joints made with the same solder can need different settings because they do not draw heat at the same rate. Consider the whole heat-transfer setup before raising the setpoint.

Factor Why it matters What to check
Solder alloy Alloys have different melting ranges. HAKKO says lead-free solder generally melts 20–45°C higher than conventional eutectic leaded solder; this describes a melting-point difference, not a required iron-setting increase. Look up the exact alloy and its solidus/liquidus information on the solder maker’s product page or datasheet.
Tip geometry and contact A tip that makes suitable contact can transfer heat more effectively than one that is too small or poorly positioned for the joint. Choose a clean tip with a shape and working face appropriate to the joint; contact the pad and lead or wire together where possible.
Joint thermal mass A large connector, heavy wire, or broad copper area can draw heat away from the tip faster than a small joint. Assess the actual metal and copper connected to the joint, not just the component’s label.
Iron recovery An iron that loses tip temperature under load may struggle to deliver heat during a demanding joint. Consider the station’s ability to recover heat and whether the tip is suited to the work. Adjustable temperature-controlled equipment is one option; it does not make one setting right for every job. See HAKKO’s FX-8802 specifications for an example of temperature-controlled soldering equipment.
Component heat sensitivity Prolonged or excessive heating can damage heat-sensitive parts even when the iron setting seems familiar. Follow the component maker’s handling guidance and work efficiently rather than leaving the tip on the joint.

A practical way to dial in the iron

  1. Identify the solder alloy. Check the spool, product page, or datasheet for leaded or lead-free composition and melting range. Do not use the alloy’s melting temperature as the iron setting.
  2. Start with a conservative setpoint. Use the soldering station or iron manufacturer’s guidance as a starting point. HAKKO’s maintenance guidance says, “Keep the preset temperature as low as possible. (Never increase the temperature to more than what you need.)”
  3. Check the tip before changing the setting. Make sure it is clean, appropriately sized, and making good contact with the surfaces being joined. A poor tip-to-joint heat path is not necessarily solved by turning up the iron.
  4. Make a test joint and observe the process. The goal is solder that melts, wets the joint, and forms a sound connection without prolonged heating. If the joint does not wet promptly, inspect contact, tip condition, joint thermal mass, and iron recovery.
  5. Adjust only if needed. After checking the heat-transfer setup, make a modest setpoint increase and try again. Stop increasing once the joint forms reliably; higher heat can accelerate oxidation and tip wear, carbonize flux, and increase stress on components.

Why lead-free solder may need a different approach

HAKKO gives a general melting-point increase of 20–45°C for lead-free solder compared with conventional eutectic solder. That does not translate into a universal instruction to raise the iron by the same amount. Actual results also depend on tip geometry, joint heat load, the iron’s recovery, and the workpiece. HAKKO’s lead-free soldering guidance discusses the higher melting temperature and the trade-offs of responding with a higher setpoint.

One HAKKO example illustrates why settings must stay tied to conditions: on a single-sided FR-1 board, the company soldered a connector using lead-free Sn-3Ag-0.5Cu solder at a 340°C setting without nitrogen and at 320°C with nitrogen preheating. These are settings from that particular example, not general connector recommendations; HAKKO says values vary with conditions. HAKKO’s N2 System Effect page describes the test context.

Keep the tip in good condition

Excessive setpoints can accelerate oxidation, shorten tip life, and contribute to flux carbonization. This makes clean, well-tinned tip maintenance part of temperature control: a degraded tip can transfer heat poorly and tempt you to compensate with more heat. HAKKO recommends a wire-type cleaner because it leaves some solder on the tip, helping limit oxidation. Use a brass-wire tip cleaner according to the iron maker’s maintenance instructions.
