Choose a startup conference by starting with the outcome you need—not its size or buzz. Identify one primary goal, check whether the right people will attend and whether the event gives you a realistic way to reach them, then weigh the agenda and total cost against a specific follow-up plan.

How do you choose the right startup conference?

Use this sequence to compare events. It keeps a large attendee count or an impressive speaker list from standing in for actual fit.

  1. Choose one primary goal. Decide whether you are focused on fundraising, customer discovery or sales, hiring, partnerships, learning, or visibility. You can have secondary goals, but name the one that will determine whether the trip was worthwhile.
  2. Define who you need to reach. Be specific about roles, company stages, sectors, and geography. For example, “investors who fund seed-stage climate software in Europe” is more useful than “investors.”
  3. Check audience fit. Look for attendee descriptions and relevant programs, not only the event’s overall size or total investor count. Ask whether the people you need are likely to be there in meaningful numbers.
  4. Verify how access works. Look for scheduled one-to-one meetings, matchmaking, pitch sessions, buyer programs, workshops, or networking formats suited to your goal. Attendance at the same event does not guarantee access to a particular person.
  5. Read the agenda for useful substance. Check whether sessions address decisions your company is facing. If learning is the main goal, prioritize practical content over a lineup that is impressive but only loosely relevant.
  6. Calculate the full commitment. Include registration, travel, accommodation, and time away from the business. Compare that cost with a plausible plan for the conversations or learning you expect to pursue; do not treat hoped-for returns as guaranteed.
  7. Set a success measure and plan follow-up. Choose a measure you can control or record, such as relevant meetings held, qualified follow-ups, or specific decisions informed. Identify target people and sessions in advance, then schedule next steps after the event.

Compare at least two events using the same criteria: audience roles and stages, sector and geography, access format, agenda relevance, scale and format, total cost, and timing against your company’s priorities. A simple scoring sheet can help, but a weak match on a must-have criterion should not be hidden by a high overall score.

Which criteria matter for your goal?

Fundraising

Prioritize investors whose stage, sector, and geography fit your company, then check whether the event offers a route to meet them—such as scheduled investor meetings or pitch sessions. A large investor total is not the same as a large number of investors suitable for your round. For a seed-stage company, the independent seed-conference guide from MeetWho is one source of examples to examine: Best Startup Conferences for Founders Raising a Seed Round.

Finding customers

Look for buyers, users, or channel partners in your target market, as well as a format that makes relevant conversations possible. A general founder audience may be useful for feedback, but it is not automatically a substitute for access to prospective customers.

Hiring

Check whether the event attracts the roles and experience levels you need, and whether its format supports meaningful conversations rather than only broad exposure. If hiring is urgent, compare the likely relevance of attendees with the cost of spending that time away from recruiting directly.

Learning

Inspect session topics and formats against a concrete question your team needs to answer. Workshops, detailed case studies, and practitioner-led sessions may be more useful than broad inspiration if you need to make a near-term product, hiring, or go-to-market decision.

Visibility

Check what visibility means at that event: speaking opportunities, pitch sessions, press access, demos, or simply being present. Confirm eligibility and application requirements rather than assuming that a ticket includes a platform or audience.

How should you evaluate conference statistics?

Separate organizer-reported figures from independently verified outcomes and from results you can reasonably expect for yourself. Attendance and meeting totals describe scale; they do not establish that attendees found relevant contacts or that conference attendance caused fundraising, customer acquisition, or hiring results.

For example, START Global’s official page for START Summit 2026 advertised 1,000+ investors, 12,000+ meetings, and 573bn CHF in investor capital. Its attendee page reported 7,000+ participants and 12,000+ meetings, and described matchmaking and pre-event meeting booking. These are organizer-published figures, not independent audits or a promise that a particular startup will meet a suitable investor. See START Summit’s startup page and its attendee page.

When figures influence your decision, check what the organizer is counting, which edition the figures describe, and whether the program offers access relevant to your goal. Do not infer a return on investment from a headline number alone.

How do you decide whether the cost is justified?

Write down the full cost before registering: ticket, transport, accommodation, and the working time you will spend preparing, attending, and following up. Then compare that commitment with your company’s current priorities and a realistic number of relevant conversations or useful sessions you can pursue.

Set a success measure in advance—for example, a target number of relevant meetings held or qualified follow-ups completed. This is a way to assess whether the event served your purpose, not a forecast of revenue or fundraising. A conference may still be worthwhile for learning or visibility even when it does not produce an immediate commercial result, provided that is the goal you chose.

What should you do before and after attending?

Before the event

  • Write down your primary goal and the people or organizations you most want to reach.
  • Review the agenda and mark sessions that support a concrete company decision.
  • Apply for or book structured meetings where available; verify the eligibility, timing, and booking process with the organizer.
  • Prepare a concise explanation of your company and a clear question or next step for each type of conversation.
  • Confirm current dates, venue, registration terms, and schedule on the organizer’s official site.

After the event

  • Record useful takeaways and the context for each conversation while they are still fresh.
  • Send relevant follow-ups with a specific next step rather than a generic note.
  • Review your pre-set success measure and decide what to change in your conference choices or preparation next time.

Is START Summit 2026 still upcoming?

No. START Global’s official event page listed the 2026 edition for 19–20 March in St. Gallen, Switzerland; those dates had passed by October 7, 2026. Treat its 2026 program and figures as edition-specific, and check the organizer’s site for the next edition’s dates and current ticket terms before making plans: START Summit for startups.
