Nordstrom says its charts use body measurements, and its fit specialists may recommend a different size for an individual item. A size number alone is not a reliable guide across brands or products.
How to measure your body accurately
Nordstrom advises measuring over undergarments rather than clothing, with the tape measure parallel to the floor. Take measurements without pulling the tape tight or letting it sag.

- Bust: Measure around the fullest part of your bust.
- Waist: Bend to one side to find the natural crease, then measure around that point.
- Hips: Measure around the fullest part of your hips and rear.
These measurements are intended to describe your body, not the dimensions of a finished garment. See Nordstrom’s size guide for its measurement instructions.
Use the size chart and Fit Tips for the exact item
Open the product page and check its Size Chart and Fit Tips after measuring. Nordstrom’s guide says to return to the product page before making a final choice because fit specialists may recommend ordering a size larger or smaller than the chart indicates. Treat that advice as specific to the item; there is no supported universal rule to always size up or down.

If two sizes seem plausible, compare your measurements with the item’s chart, then weigh its Fit Tips and the measurement most important for that garment. For pants, for example, inseam is a garment measurement: Nordstrom defines it as the inside seam from the bottom of the crotch seam to the hem. Do not confuse it with a body measurement.
Confirm the size is actually available
A size chart can show reference sizes that a particular product is not offered in. Check the live size options on the product page before deciding, rather than assuming every size on a chart can be ordered.

Check the return terms for your order
Returns can provide a fallback if the fit is wrong, but the applicable terms depend on the order and location. Nordstrom lists online and in-store return options. International orders placed through Borderfree or ESW follow a different process and do not qualify for free returns or merchandise exchanges. Review Nordstrom’s return policy for the terms that apply to your purchase.
