Choose a motorcycle rollbag by packing the gear you actually plan to carry, then checking that the bag fits and secures safely to your bike. There is no reliable litres-per-day formula: clothing choices, resupply and camping gear can change the load more than trip length alone.
Start with the gear, not the number of days
Lay out the items you expect to take and pack them as you would for the ride. Use that real load to compare bag capacities, while leaving room for the bag to close and for straps or compression to work as designed. A 30 L label does not tell you how many days of clothing or camping equipment will fit; bags differ in shape, opening and how their capacity is measured.
Trip length matters because it can affect clothing and supplies, but it is only one input. Laundry or resupply plans, weather, personal packing choices and camping equipment all change the volume. The available evidence does not establish a general litres-per-day rule or a capacity recommendation by trip duration.
Compare capacity alongside fit and function
Published capacities are useful for narrowing choices, not for deciding on their own. Check the dimensions and shape, how easily you can load and retrieve gear, whether the bag compresses or expands, how it attaches, and the maker’s precise weather-protection and payload claims.

You can adjust the tightness according to the size of the item with an elastic band. Equipped with additional rain covers, keep your belongings from getting wet
- Fit and mounting: Confirm that the maker lists your bike or mounting location as compatible. Check clearance around the seat, rack, exhaust, lights and moving parts with the bag loaded, and secure it using the specified attachment points.
- Access: A larger opening can make bulky items easier to pack and retrieve. Consider whether the closure suits how often you need access during the ride.
- Compression or expansion: Compression can help stabilize a changing or smaller load, but only when the bag remains securely mounted. Do not rely on capacity alone to judge how well a partly filled bag will sit.
- Weather protection: Read the exact claim for the compartment, seams and closure. “Waterproof” or “watertight” does not automatically mean submersible.
- Weight and payload: A bag’s own weight and its stated maximum payload are separate from its volume. Never infer a safe payload from litres; follow the manufacturer’s limit and the motorcycle’s luggage guidance.

Make the choice on your motorcycle
- Pack the intended load. Include the clothes, tools and other items you really expect to carry, plus camping equipment if applicable. Decide what you will wash, replenish or leave behind.
- Shortlist bags by usable capacity and shape. Compare the packed load with the bag’s opening and dimensions, not just its litre figure. If your load varies, consider whether compression or an adjustable capacity is useful.
- Verify fitment and mounting. Check the manufacturer’s compatibility information and mounting instructions for your model. Load the bag and check that it stays secure and clear of hot, moving or safety-critical parts.
- Check weight and weather details. Compare the bag’s own weight and any stated payload limit. Match the closure and protection claim to the conditions you expect, and protect critical items separately if the claim does not cover your needs.
- Reassess the packed setup. If the bag cannot close properly, shifts when secured or interferes with the bike, reduce or redistribute the load rather than forcing the fit.
When a single rollbag is not the right layout
A tail-mounted rollbag is one luggage arrangement, not a requirement. Split luggage can distribute items across the motorcycle, but it introduces separate mounting, compatibility and payload checks. The Royal Enfield pannier example above is specific to the models listed by its manufacturer; it is not a universal fit recommendation.
A rider discussion in the Triumph community includes one person’s example of fitting four days’ gear in a 30 L bag. That is a personal packing outcome, not a sizing rule. Use your own packed load and the bag’s fit on your motorcycle to make the decision.
