Choose laptop RAM and graphics around where your AI workloads will run. If you mainly write code and send jobs to a cloud GPU, 16 GB of system RAM can be enough for lighter experimentation, and you may not need a dedicated GPU. For local development, 32 GB is a practical target. If you plan to train, fine-tune, or run models on the laptop, check the exact GPU’s VRAM and software compatibility: system RAM cannot make up for insufficient GPU memory.
Start with where the computation will run
The right configuration depends less on the label “AI laptop” than on whether the laptop will compute locally or act as a development terminal for remote hardware.
- Code and remote jobs: You can use the laptop for editors, notebooks, data preparation, and environment management while a cloud or institutional server performs GPU-heavy work. A dedicated laptop GPU may not be necessary; confirm your remote environment, network access, and local tooling requirements.
- Local experiments and inference: You need enough system RAM for development tools and data, plus enough GPU VRAM for the model and its runtime if you use GPU acceleration.
- Local training or fine-tuning: Memory and sustained compute demands rise. Check the exact model, method, precision, sequence length, and batch size before choosing hardware.
NVIDIA says its AI Workbench does not require a GPU to work, but that statement applies to AI Workbench itself—not to every local AI workload. Its support matrix lists 16 GB of system RAM as a minimum and 32 GB as recommended for its full local installation.
How much system RAM should you get?
System RAM holds the data and applications your computer is actively using: notebooks, datasets, development tools, containers, and other open programs. For general local AI development, 32 GB is a useful target; 16 GB can work for lighter experiments, coding, and remote workflows. Larger datasets, containers, and multitasking can make more memory helpful. Lenovo likewise recommends considering 32 GB or more for larger datasets and involved workflows.

These are practical starting points, not universal minimums. A particular tool can specify its own requirements: NVIDIA AI Workbench’s 16 GB minimum and 32 GB recommendation apply to that product’s listed local install, not to all AI software.
How much GPU memory do you need?
GPU memory, usually called VRAM, stores model and workload data used by the graphics processor. It is separate from system RAM. Adding system memory does not let a model exceed the VRAM available to the GPU when the workload needs to reside there.

Model size is only part of the calculation. Precision, quantization, context length, batch size, and software configuration affect memory use, so a model’s parameter count is not a fit guarantee. NVIDIA’s version 1.7.0 NIM documentation gives rough examples of about 15 GB of GPU memory for Llama 8B and about 131 GB for Llama 70B, and warns that actual requirements may be lower or higher depending on hardware and configuration. See NVIDIA NIM for LLMs.
For local training, image generation, computer vision, and fine-tuning, Dell recommends at least 12 GB of VRAM. Treat that as vendor guidance, not a promise that a particular model or training setup will fit. Training and fine-tuning can require substantially more memory than inference.

Why training and fine-tuning change the calculation
Training must retain additional information for gradients, optimizer states, and other overhead, so a model that can run for inference may not fit for training on the same GPU. NVIDIA Developer gives a rough estimate of about 28 GB for training a 7-billion-parameter model in FP16 under its stated rule of thumb; the estimate includes optimizer and overhead assumptions. It is not a universal requirement.
The fine-tuning method can also change the memory demand dramatically. Lenovo Press’s October 20, 2025 guide estimates the following for a 7B model:

| Fine-tuning method and precision | Estimated memory |
|---|---|
| Full fine-tuning, 16-bit | 67 GB |
| LoRA, 16-bit | 15 GB |
| QLoRA, 4-bit | 5 GB |
These are estimates for the named configurations, not universal sizing rules. The estimates illustrate why deciding on a training method before buying matters. For larger fine-tuning jobs, a laptop can be constrained by both memory and sustained compute; parameter-efficient methods or remote compute may be more suitable than expecting a laptop GPU to handle full fine-tuning.

Quick Recap
A practical selection by workload
| Your main use | System RAM starting point | GPU approach |
|---|---|---|
| Coding, notebooks, exploration, and remote training | 16 GB may work for lighter use; 32 GB gives more room for tools and multitasking. | A dedicated GPU may not be needed if computation runs remotely. |
| Local small-model inference and basic experiments | Prefer 32 GB if running containers and several development tools alongside experiments. | Match actual VRAM to the model’s precision, quantization, and context needs. |
| Local training, image generation, computer vision, or fine-tuning | 32 GB is a useful starting point; larger datasets or heavier multitasking may benefit from more. | Dell recommends at least 12 GB VRAM for these local workflows, but confirm fit for the exact workload. |
| Larger fine-tuning or substantial research workloads | Assess system memory alongside compute limits. | Compare the memory for the precise method and configuration; consider LoRA/QLoRA or remote compute if full fine-tuning exceeds laptop capacity. |
Before buying, verify the workload rather than the marketing label
- List the models and tasks you expect to run locally, separating inference from training or fine-tuning.
- For each local GPU task, check memory estimates for the exact model, precision or quantization, context length, batch size, and method.
- Confirm the exact laptop SKU’s VRAM, system RAM capacity and upgradeability, operating-system support, and framework/driver compatibility.
- Check whether its cooling and power design suits sustained workloads, and whether its SSD has room for your tools, containers, datasets, and model files.
- If the required GPU memory or sustained performance is beyond the laptop, compare remote compute instead of assuming more system RAM will solve the constraint.
