Measure the area you want to cool, then compare it with a portable-air-conditioner sizing chart that uses the unit’s DOE SACC rating. Treat coverage figures as starting points, not guarantees: sunlight, ceiling height, cooking, occupants, insulation, and exhaust setup can all affect how well a unit cools.
1. Measure the area you expect the unit to cool
For a rectangular room, measure its length and width in feet and multiply them. Convert inches to fractions of a foot if needed. For an irregular space, divide the floor plan into simple shapes, calculate each area, and add the results. If an open doorway makes adjoining rooms part of one cooling zone, include the area the portable AC is expected to serve.
ENERGY STAR’s room-AC sizing guidance uses this floor-area method and assumes an 8-foot ceiling. Its capacity chart is for room air conditioners generally, however, not portable ACs rated using DOE SACC; use it as background rather than as a portable-AC conversion chart.
2. Match the area to a portable-AC chart and its SACC rating
Look for the manufacturer’s stated room coverage and the portable AC’s DOE SACC capacity. SACC means seasonally adjusted cooling capacity, determined under the U.S. Department of Energy’s portable-AC test procedure. Listings may also show an older ASHRAE capacity figure, which is not the same scale. When comparing portable models, use SACC for like-for-like comparison and check which rating a listing means when it says only “BTU.” See the DOE’s portable-AC standards and test-procedure overview.

As one manufacturer’s example—not a universal guarantee—Danby’s portable-AC sizing guide pairs these room-area bands with SACC and older ASHRAE capacities:

These are Danby’s published sizing values, not results from an independent test. For example, its guide puts a 300-square-foot room in the 251–300-square-foot band, with a suggested 4,550 SACC BTU. Other manufacturers may use different coverage guidance, so also check the exact model’s rating label and manual.

3. Adjust your choice for the room’s conditions
A baseline chart may not fit a room that differs from its assumptions. Danby identifies ceiling height relative to 8 feet, sun or shade, kitchen use, and regular occupants beyond two as factors in its sizing guidance. AHAM likewise advises sizing up for a very sunny room, kitchen, or high ceilings. Follow the recommendation for the specific manufacturer and model rather than combining different sources’ rules into a new formula.
For context, ENERGY STAR’s general room-AC guidance—not a portable-specific SACC adjustment—suggests reducing capacity 10% for heavy shade, adding 10% for a very sunny room, adding 600 BTU per hour for each regular occupant above two, and adding 4,000 BTU per hour for kitchen use. Do not mechanically apply those figures to a portable-AC chart without confirming the manufacturer’s method.

- Sun exposure: A very sunny room may need more capacity than a shaded room.
- Ceiling height: A room with ceilings higher than the chart’s assumptions has more air to cool.
- Cooking and occupants: Kitchens and regularly occupied rooms can add heat beyond the floor area alone.
- Insulation and leakage: Poor insulation or air leaks can make a room harder to cool; consult the unit’s coverage guidance and manual for your situation.
4. Check the exhaust and window installation
A portable AC needs an exhaust path through a window or another opening approved by its manufacturer. Before buying, confirm that the supplied window kit fits your window, that the hose can be routed as instructed, and that the installation is practical for the room. DOE materials distinguish single-duct and dual-duct portable AC configurations; see its final rule on portable-AC test procedures and duct configurations.
Do not assume that one duct arrangement always performs better for your needs. Compare the actual SACC rating, the maker’s stated coverage, installation constraints, and model-specific instructions.

5. Compare the models that fit your measured area
When more than one portable AC appears suitable, compare the details that affect both capacity and installation:
