Choose the 13-inch MacBook Air if carrying a smaller laptop matters more than having a larger built-in workspace; choose the 15-inch model if you often keep multiple windows open side by side. Then match memory to the apps you run at once and storage to the files you keep on the Mac. Apple’s current lineup is the M5 generation, with configuration choices that vary by model and starting configuration.
Choose between the 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air
The size decision is mainly a trade-off between a more portable screen and more built-in display area. Apple lists a 13.6-inch display at 2560 by 1664 pixels for the 13-inch M5 and a 15.3-inch display at 2880 by 1864 pixels for the 15-inch M5. Both are 224 pixels per inch and rated at 500 nits. - Pick 13-inch if you regularly carry your laptop and are comfortable working on a smaller screen or connecting to a monitor at your desk.
- Pick 15-inch if you prefer more room for documents, browser tabs, or two windows side by side without relying on an external display.
There is no measured productivity advantage established for either size here; choose based on where and how you work.
Choose memory for the apps you use at the same time
Apple’s M5 MacBook Air configurations start at 16GB of unified memory, with options up to 24GB or 32GB depending on model and starting configuration. Everyday browsing, documents, and video calls fit the ordinary-use profile, but there is no tested minimum that guarantees a particular experience.

- 16GB: a reasonable starting configuration for routine web, office, and video-call use.
- Consider 24GB or 32GB: if your regular work involves larger creative projects, development tools, virtual machines, or many demanding apps open together. More memory is workload-based headroom, not a promise of future-proofing or a measured performance gain.

Choose storage based on what you keep locally
Apple’s listed SSD capacities begin at 512GB and go up to 4TB, with upgrade options varying by starting configuration. Estimate the space needed for applications, photo and video libraries, downloaded media, project files, and documents you want available offline.

- Choose more internal storage if you keep large libraries or active project files on the laptop and want them available without an internet connection or external drive.
- A smaller capacity may suit you if you routinely use cloud storage or are comfortable connecting a compatible external SSD for less frequently used files.
No universal required capacity or upgrade price is established here; compare the actual configuration prices at checkout rather than assuming a fixed premium.
Check ports, monitors, and battery expectations
Both sizes are part of the M5 MacBook Air lineup. Apple lists MagSafe 3, a 3.5 mm headphone jack, and two Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports, which support charging, DisplayPort, Thunderbolt 4 up to 40Gb/s, and USB 4 up to 40Gb/s. Apple says the Air supports up to two external displays, with supported resolution and refresh-rate combinations specified in its technical specifications. If a dock, monitor, or other peripheral setup is essential, verify the exact configuration before purchase. A USB-C hub or external SSD can address a specific connection or storage need, but accessory compatibility should be confirmed for your setup.
