Start by deciding whether your Mac needs to travel. Choose between Apple’s MacBook Air and MacBook Pro laptops if you need a portable computer; consider Mac mini, iMac, or Mac Studio if it will stay at a desk. Then match the exact configuration—memory, storage, display, and ports—to your applications and budget. Apple’s lineup comparison identifies the current families, but it does not establish which model performs best for a particular job.
1. Decide whether you need a laptop or a desktop
Apple’s current lineup includes MacBook Air and MacBook Pro laptops, alongside Mac mini, iMac, and Mac Studio desktops. The practical first question is where you will use the computer: on the move, at a fixed desk, or in both settings. See Apple’s Mac model comparison for the listed families.
Choose a laptop if you work in more than one place
A MacBook gives you a built-in screen and a computer you can carry between locations. Compare the screen size and configuration of the exact Air or Pro model you are considering; the family name alone does not tell you whether its memory, storage, or ports suit your work.
Choose a desktop if it will live at a workspace
For a desk-based setup, compare Mac mini, iMac, and Mac Studio. Before comparing the computer price with a laptop, account for the complete setup you need. A Mac mini or Mac Studio buyer may need to budget separately for a display and peripherals; verify the requirements and compatibility of the specific equipment you plan to use.

2. Match the configuration to your actual work
Write down the applications you use, the files you handle, and the equipment you connect. Check the software maker’s current system requirements and any workload-specific guidance before buying. The available Apple comparison and price list do not provide software minimums or independent performance benchmarks, so they cannot establish that a particular Mac is best for a profession or workload.
- Memory: Compare the listed memory with the needs of your applications and the amount of work you typically keep open. Do not assume a family name or price establishes what your workflow requires.
- Storage: Consider the size of active projects and how long you need files available on the computer. Compare the SSD capacity on each exact configuration, not just the model label.
- Display and workspace: Decide whether the built-in laptop screen or the desktop arrangement fits your work. Include any separate display equipment you need in the total cost.
- Ports and peripherals: Check the ports on the precise configuration against your monitors, storage devices, and other equipment. Confirm compatibility with the equipment maker rather than inferring it from the Mac family.

Compare the cost of the configuration you need, not just the starting price or product family. For a desktop, add the display and peripherals you must buy; for any Mac, allow for the memory, storage, and connectivity your applications and equipment require. Compare current local consumer prices rather than treating education-institution list prices as universal quotes.
