Choose lubricant by the printer model and motion component—not by a grease’s general-purpose label. Smooth rods, linear rails, and threaded lead screws can have different maintenance rules, even on printers from the same manufacturer. Check the exact model’s maintenance guide, then use only the specified product, amount, application points, and interval.

Identify the part before choosing a lubricant

First determine what your printer actually uses and which part needs attention. A smooth rod with a linear bearing is not the same as a recirculating linear rail or a threaded Z-axis lead screw. Manufacturer instructions can differ by component and by model; Prusa warns that using the wrong lubricant type can damage a component (Prusa troubleshooting guidance).

  • Smooth rods and linear bearings: Follow the model guide for cleaning, rod lubrication, and whether bearings should be greased internally.
  • Linear rails: Check whether the manufacturer requires a dedicated rail lubricant or lubrication set. Do not assume grease for rods is suitable.
  • Threaded lead screws and trapezoidal nuts: Look up the exact model’s instructions. Some guides call for lubrication; others explicitly say not to lubricate these parts.

Do not lubricate belts, pulleys, every lead screw, or every rail simply because they are part of the motion system. Apply lubricant only where the model guide directs.

Model-specific examples: the instructions are not interchangeable

These Prusa examples show why the printer model and component must both be identified. They are manufacturer instructions for the named machines, not a universal rule for other printers.

Printer and component Prusa guidance Scope and caution
CORE One/+ smooth rods and bearings Clean the rods and use a small amount of Prusa Lubricant. Applies to the named model and axes described in its maintenance guide.
CORE One/+ linear rails Use the dedicated linear-rail lubrication set, which specifies Microlube GL 261; the guide recommends service every 3–6 months. Do not use Prusa Lubricant or products outside that set on these rails. See the CORE One/+ guide.
CORE One L smooth rods and bearings The guide separately directs lubricant for the smooth rods and bearings. For the named model and specified parts; consult the CORE One L guide.
CORE One L linear rails Use its dedicated rail lubrication set; the guide recommends service every 3–6 months. Do not treat the rod instructions as rail instructions. See the CORE One L guide.
XL linear rails Use the dedicated linear-rail set, which specifies Microlube GL 261. Follow the XL maintenance guide; the set is not presented as interchangeable with general-purpose lubricant.
XL Z-axis lead screws Lubricate after approximately 500 print hours using Prusa Lubricant. This interval and product are specific to the XL guide, not all lead screws.
MINI/MINI+ smooth rods After approximately 200 print hours, clean the rods and apply a suitable Super Lube. If movement remains rough, the guide says bearings may be removed and greased internally. This guidance is for smooth rods and bearings, not rails or lead screws. See the MINI/MINI+ guide.
MINI/MINI+, MK3.5/S, and i3 Z-axis lead screws and trapezoidal nuts The cited guides say not to lubricate these parts. Do not apply the XL instruction to these models. See the MINI/MINI+, MK3.5/S, and i3 guides.

How to select a product for your printer

  1. Find the exact model and revision. Open the manufacturer’s maintenance instructions for that printer, rather than borrowing a recommendation from a similar-looking machine.
  2. Match the instructions to the component. Confirm whether the part is a smooth rod and bearing, a linear rail, or a threaded lead screw and nut. Also check whether the guide specifies a particular maintenance set.
  3. Use the named lubricant and form. If the guide names a product or set, use it for the specified component. For example, Prusa’s CORE One/+ rail guidance excludes Prusa Lubricant and products outside its dedicated rail set. Do not substitute a general-purpose grease based only on its label.
  4. Follow the stated amount and application location. Use only what the guide directs, and keep lubricant away from parts the instructions say to leave dry. Prusa’s maintenance guide cautions against applying too much paste because excess can have the opposite effect.
  5. Use the model’s service interval. The cited examples range from print-hour-based maintenance to a calendar interval for particular rails. Treat these as model-specific manufacturer schedules, not a universal cadence.

When a guide names lubricant options or viscosity

The MK3.5/S and i3 guidance names Super Lube 210XX, GLEIT-µ HF 400, and Mogul LV 2-EP as lubricant options in its stated context, advises against very high viscosity, and says not to lubricate the Z-axis threaded lead screws or trapezoidal nuts. Those names and cautions should not be detached from that guide and applied to every motion component or printer. The same maintenance material warns that oil-based lubricant on extruder gears can spread toward the filament path; extruder gears are a separate component from the motion system. See the MK3.5/S guide and i3 guide.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing by marketing label: “General-purpose” does not establish compatibility with a particular bearing, rail, seal, or printer. The manufacturer warns that the wrong type can be damaging.
  • Using one lubricant everywhere: A lubricant suitable for smooth rods may be explicitly excluded from a model’s rails, while a lead screw may have a separate rule.
  • Applying more to solve rough motion: Excess paste can attract or retain dust and may worsen performance. Follow the specified quantity and location instead.
  • Assuming all lead screws need grease: The XL instruction to lubricate its Z lead screws contrasts with instructions for MINI/MINI+, MK3.5/S, and i3 models not to lubricate their specified Z-axis lead screws and nuts.
  • Copying another printer’s interval: A schedule given in print hours for one component is not a universal schedule for other printers or rails.

If you cannot find a clear instruction

Do not guess a lubricant or apply one to all moving parts. Check the printer’s current manufacturer maintenance guide for the exact model and component; if it does not resolve compatibility or application, ask the manufacturer or consult the printer’s support documentation before lubricating. The cited guidance does not establish a universal cross-brand compatibility chart or a single best lubricant for every 3D printer.
