For a UGREEN NAS with SATA drive bays, choose a NAS-rated CMR hard drive, size the array for the usable capacity you need after RAID overhead, and check the exact drive model and capacity against UGREEN’s compatibility list for your NAS model. UGREEN names WD Red Plus/Red Pro, Seagate IronWolf/IronWolf Pro, and Toshiba N300 as examples for the DXP4800 Plus; its DH4300 Plus FAQ also names WD Red Plus, IronWolf, and N300. These are manufacturer recommendations, not confirmation that every capacity or SKU has been tested on every UGREEN NAS.
Start by confirming your UGREEN NAS model and bay type
Drive choice depends on the specific NAS. Check its product specifications to confirm the number and type of drive bays before buying. UGREEN describes the DXP4800 Plus as having four SATA HDD bays that support 3.5-inch and 2.5-inch SATA drives. Its DH4300 Plus FAQ also says 2.5-inch drives fit. Do not assume these details apply to every model; check the specifications for your exact unit.
Some UGREEN NAS models also have M.2 NVMe slots. Those are physically and functionally different from SATA HDD bays, so an M.2 drive is not a substitute for a SATA drive in a SATA bay. See UGREEN’s DXP4800 Plus specifications and FAQ.
Choose NAS-rated CMR rather than SMR
UGREEN recommends NAS-rated CMR (Conventional Magnetic Recording) drives for the DXP4800 Plus. Its compatibility list advises against SMR (Shingled Magnetic Recording) drives, and the DH4300 Plus FAQ also advises avoiding desktop drives. Follow the NAS maker’s guidance and check the exact candidate drive in the compatibility list rather than assuming a drive is suitable from its capacity or connector alone.

- Blazing Speed, Minimal Power: Equipped with a high-performance processor, 1GbE port, and 4GB RAM on Board, this NAS handles multiple tasks with ease. File transfers reach up to 125MB/s—a 1GB file takes only 8 seconds. Don't let slow clouds hold you back; they often need over 100 seconds for the same task. The difference is clear.
- Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
UGREEN warns: “It is not recommended to use SMR (Shingled Magnetic Recording) hard drives or mix old and new drives in the same RAID storage array, as this may lead to a risk of data loss.” That is a recommendation against those configurations, not a claim that every desktop drive will fail.

Size the array for usable capacity, not just the label on each drive
First estimate how much space you need for files, then allow for growth and account for the RAID level you plan to use. The capacity printed on a drive is not the same as the space available to store files once the disks are configured as an array.
As a product-specific example, UGREEN says four 8 TB drives in RAID 5 provide approximately 24 TB of usable space on the DXP4800 Plus. UGREEN recommends RAID 5 for most four-drive users and mentions RAID 10 for users willing to trade capacity for the protection and speed characteristics it describes. Treat that as UGREEN’s guidance for this model, not a universal recommendation: usable space depends on the number and capacity of drives and the selected RAID level. UGREEN’s DXP4800 Plus FAQ.

Verify the exact drive in UGREEN’s compatibility list
Before checkout, look up the NAS model and the precise drive model and capacity in UGREEN’s compatibility list. A family-level recommendation is not a substitute for checking the SKU you intend to buy. Prioritize a drive that UGREEN lists as having passed its compatibility testing.
UGREEN says the list verifies basic hardware interoperability, cannot test every product, and may be affected by hardware or software changes. Compatibility can change, so treat the live list as the final check rather than relying on a general recommendation for a drive family.

Compare other specifications only after compatibility
Once you have suitable, compatible candidates, compare the details that matter for your use. UGREEN’s recommendations do not establish which specific SKU is quieter, uses less power, has a longer warranty, or costs less. Check the drive maker’s specifications and current local retailer information for those questions.
- Workload, noise, and power: compare the manufacturers’ specifications for the exact models you are considering.
- Warranty and price: verify the terms and current availability in your region; these vary by SKU and market.
- Age of the drives: UGREEN discourages mixing old and new drives in the same RAID array. Consider drive age separately from capacity and family name.
Keep a separate backup
RAID can address a disk failure, but it is not a backup. Accidental deletion, ransomware, or a disaster can affect data across the array. UGREEN’s DH4300 Plus FAQ points users to a 3-2-1 backup approach; use a separate backup plan rather than treating RAID redundancy as protection against every kind of data loss.
