Choose filament by the part’s job and environment, then confirm your printer can handle that exact spool. PLA is an easy starting point for models and low-stress prototypes; PETG suits many everyday functional parts; ASA is a common option for outdoor use; TPU is for flexible parts; and nylon is useful for wear-oriented mechanical parts when kept dry. No material is best for every purpose: formulation, print settings, part geometry and layer orientation all affect the result.
Start with the part, not the filament label
Before comparing spools, decide what the printed part must do and what it will face. A decorative model has different needs from a loaded bracket, a sun-exposed cover or a flexible seal.
- Name the job: Is the part decorative, a prototype, a household fixture, an outdoor component, flexible, or subject to repeated movement or wear?
- List the environment: Consider sunlight, moisture, impact, heat, abrasion, repeated loads and chemical exposure.
- Consider failure consequences: A failed low-stress organizer is an inconvenience; a failed load-bearing or safety-related part can cause harm. Do not select a safety-critical component from a generic material guide alone.
- Check your printer and spool: Compare the machine’s temperature limits, enclosure and filament path with the exact product’s printing and safety instructions.
FDM parts are directional: layers can behave differently from the direction in which filament is deposited. A suitable polymer can still fail if the geometry, orientation or bonding between layers does not suit the load. Design and orient the part around the forces it will experience.
Compare common FDM filament families
| Material | Good starting use | Tradeoffs and checks |
|---|---|---|
| PLA | Beginner prints, models, decorations, toys, educational objects and low-stress prototypes | Usually easy to print and relatively low-warping. It is not a default choice for hot environments, outdoor exposure or loaded parts. |
| PETG | Brackets, mounts, organizers, covers and many everyday functional parts | Often balances toughness and printability. Stringing can need attention, and it may adhere strongly to some smooth build surfaces; follow the plate maker’s guidance. |
| ASA | Outdoor brackets, covers and parts exposed to sun or weather | UV and weather resistance are common reasons to choose it. It prints similarly to ABS and may warp if cooling conditions are unstable; check enclosure and ventilation guidance. |
| ABS | Functional parts where its properties and post-processing options fit | Needs more controlled printing conditions. Follow the specific maker’s ventilation and equipment instructions; a retailer guide warns of unpleasant fumes. |
| TPU | Grips, seals, gaskets, vibration dampers, protective feet, straps and flexible covers | Flexible, rubber-like grades can be difficult to feed, especially through long filament paths, and often print more reliably at slower speeds. |
| Nylon / PA | Gears, hinges, bushings, clips and parts subject to wear or repeated movement | Common grades are tough and abrasion-resistant, but moisture-sensitive. Dry and store the filament as its manufacturer directs. |
| PC | Higher-temperature functional or engineering parts when the printer supports the specific grade | May require higher nozzle and bed temperatures and stable printing conditions. Capabilities vary between desktop printers and PC blends. |
| Carbon-fiber-filled blends | Applications needing stiffness or dimensional stability, if the specific composite is suitable | These are polymer composites, not metal. Properties depend on the base resin and formulation; abrasive fill often calls for a compatible hardened nozzle. |
| PVA/BVOH or HIPS | Soluble or removable supports in compatible multi-material workflows | Specialized support materials rather than general-purpose part filaments. Confirm compatibility with the printer and workflow. |
Match printer capability to the exact spool
Check the printer’s maximum nozzle and bed temperatures, enclosure or temperature stability, build surface, extruder and filament path, nozzle material, and accepted filament diameter. Then read the spool maker’s instructions for settings, drying and storage, surface compatibility and nozzle requirements. A material name alone does not establish that every formulation will suit your machine.

Choose between plausible materials by the requirement that matters
When two materials seem suitable, compare them against the actual use rather than asking which is universally stronger. Weigh print reliability, heat exposure, outdoor UV and weather, flexibility, impact and wear, moisture sensitivity, printer temperature and enclosure needs, build-surface and nozzle compatibility, and the consequence of failure.
For example, PLA may be the simpler choice for a low-stress indoor model, while PETG is a more relevant candidate for an everyday functional bracket. An outdoor part points toward ASA as a common starting option, but the printer must also provide stable conditions. For moving or wear-prone parts, nylon may fit the job if its moisture handling is manageable. Exact strength or heat limits should only be compared for specified grades tested under comparable conditions; the cited guides do not establish a controlled cross-brand numerical ranking.

Account for handling and safety
Keep moisture-sensitive filament dry
Nylon is particularly moisture-sensitive among the listed choices. Follow the filament maker’s drying and storage directions; printing damp filament can undermine the result. A drybox or dryer is useful only when it suits the material and its instructions.
Use ventilation and compatible hardware
Follow the exact manufacturer’s safety and ventilation guidance, especially for materials or workflows that call for an enclosure or have emissions concerns. Abrasive carbon-fiber-filled filament may wear a standard nozzle, so check whether the printer and nozzle are suitable.

Do not assume a printed part is food-safe
A “food-safe” filament label by itself does not establish that an FDM-printed object is safe for food contact. The FilamentsCA guide cautions that gaps between printed lines can be difficult to clean. This is a retailer guide’s caution, not a complete regulatory assessment; evaluate the exact material, process, finish and intended use before making a food-contact claim.
Validate parts where failure could harm someone
Do not rely on a generic material recommendation for a safety-critical application. Validation must account for the exact resin, print process, geometry, load and environment.
