Start with the result you want
First decide whether you want curls or waves, a smoother finish, more volume, natural curl definition, or stretched curls. Then factor in hair length and strand thickness. Dyson’s hair-type guide, published December 6, 2023, makes recommendations across those characteristics rather than naming one attachment as best for everyone.

Choose a barrel by hair length and curl size
Barrel diameter changes the result
As a general starting point from Dyson’s guidance, smaller barrels are for tighter curls, while the 1.6-inch barrel is associated with looser curls and waves. A larger barrel is not automatically better: choose based on the look you want as well as your hair’s length and ability to wrap around it.

Long-barrel versions suit longer hair
For longer hair, look for long versions of the 1.2-inch or 1.6-inch barrel. Barrel length and diameter are separate considerations: length helps accommodate longer sections, while diameter influences the curl or wave size.
Choose a brush by strand thickness and finish
Soft or firm smoothing brush
Dyson recommends soft smoothing brushes for fine hair and firm smoothing brushes for coarse or frizz-prone hair. The distinction is about the bristle option and intended smoothing use; it does not mean a brush guarantees a particular finish on every head of hair.

Round volumizing brush
Choose a round volumizing brush when body and shape are the priority. Dyson also offers a larger round version for longer hair. Check the catalog for the size and version sold for your model and region.
Choose for curly or coily hair based on whether you want definition or stretch
For natural curl definition
Dyson’s curly-hair guidance recommends a diffuser for shaping and defining natural curls. This is the more relevant starting point when you want to work with your curl pattern rather than stretch it.

For stretching or smoothing
Dyson’s recommendations also include a wide-tooth comb and brush or barrel options for stretched, smooth, or bouncy styles. Select according to the finish you want, and verify that the specific attachment is offered for your Airwrap version; curly or coily texture alone does not determine the right tool.

Prepare hair and use the attachment for its intended mode
Use barrels on damp hair
Dyson’s Airwrap product FAQ says barrels work best on damp hair. Follow the tool’s instructions for preparation and use rather than assuming a barrel will create or hold a curl on dry hair.
Set expectations for curl retention
In its March 2026 curl-retention guidance, Dyson notes that curls may be harder to retain in straight, heavy, or fine hair, and advises matching temperature and airflow to hair type. The attachment alone cannot guarantee how long a curl lasts; preparation and technique also matter.

Use Smoothing mode for the right finish
Dyson says the Coanda smoothing dryer’s Smoothing mode works best on naturally straight or wavy hair, or hair straightened from any type. Its drying mode can be used across hair types. Choose the mode according to your starting texture and goal, not just the attachment name.
