Start with the experience you want
Decide what you most want from this playthrough: story and atmosphere, exploration, tense resource management, demanding combat, or solving puzzles. Then identify what is creating difficulty. A broad Easy, Normal, or Hard preset can change several mechanics at once, even when you only want to adjust one of them.

Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guideline 108 recommends offering difficulty choices and describes why adjustable mechanics can help: a player might reduce combat challenge while keeping puzzle difficulty, or change puzzles without changing combat. This is a design guideline, not a promise that a particular game has those controls.
Choose the settings that match the challenge
When a game exposes separate options, look for the source of friction rather than lowering every challenge by default. Menu names and effects differ, so use the game’s own descriptions and official help for the exact title and edition.
#1 Best Overall
Combat
Combat settings may affect enemy damage or aggression, player damage, enemy perception or accuracy, aim and dodge assistance, or timing windows. If fights are disrupting exploration or the story, adjust combat without automatically changing puzzles—if the game lets you separate them.
Puzzles and progression
Puzzle difficulty, hints, and puzzle-skip options can make progression more manageable while leaving combat intact. Check whether a puzzle setting changes puzzle content or locks in when a playthrough begins.
Navigation and exploration
Navigation guidance, traversal assistance, ledge protection, and cues for interactable objects can reduce uncertainty about where to go or how to move through an environment. Item- or enemy-finding aids may also be available in some games.

- Classic Craft-Based Survival Horror - Scavenge every corner of Rutherford Ranch to stay alive. From haunted forests, a derelict town, to infested bunkers. Explore a world teeming with danger as you gather vital resources, craft essential gear, upgrade your campsite, and rebuild outposts to have somewhere to hide.
- Day Prepares You. Night Hunts You - A dynamic day-night cycle that changes the world. Use daylight wisely to explore, scavenge supplies, craft what you need, and prepare for what’s coming. When night falls, the real nightmares come out to play. More enemies appear, stronger and more aggressive than before. The landscape becomes harder to navigate with just your flashlight. Sometimes your best hope is to find shelter and hunker down till morning.
- Deadly Silence Goes A Long Way - Stealth and combat go hand-in-hand here as many of the twisted creatures in Rutherford Ranch hunt and stalk you by sound alone. Brute force will often just land you in an early grave. Use sound to your advantage, luring creatures away from your path or cleverly leading them straight into deadly traps you laid.
- 80’s Vibes Meets Comic Book Flair - Inspired by the award-nominated comic book series created by Kyle Starks and Artyom Topilin, I Hate This Place comes to life with bold colors, a punchy retro comic book style, and a heavy dose of '80s flair. A unique blend of horror, dark humor, and just the right touch of camp and gore where unsettling dread meets stylized charm.
- Languages – English in-game voice. English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), Simplified Chinese, and Spanish (Spain) in-game text.
Input demands
Button remapping, hold-versus-toggle controls, fewer repeated presses, camera assistance, aim assistance, and automatic weapon switching can change the physical demands of play without necessarily reducing puzzle challenge or resource pressure. Choose the input option that addresses the specific task causing difficulty.
Sensory information
Check for subtitle size, color, background and speaker labels; text-to-speech; high-contrast display; and visual or audio cues. Some games use sound to signal threats or traversal opportunities, so look for visual alternatives if those cues are hard to perceive.
Resource and save pressure
If the game offers them, consider options affecting resource scarcity, save rules, checkpoints, timers, oxygen, stamina, or the consequences of failure. These systems can create tension independently of enemy combat difficulty.

- Uncover Hidden Mysteries- Advance through the world and complete the main story, or explore of the beaten path and embark on side quests to uncover Away's hidden mysteries
- Photo Mode- Freeze the sugar glider anywhere and move the camera while the rest of the world continues in ambient motion
Use game-specific examples, not genre assumptions
The official The Last of Us Part II accessibility page lists options such as navigation assistance, simplified traversal, ledge guard, infinite breath, puzzle skip, enhanced listen mode, text-to-speech, traversal and combat audio cues, combat vibration cues, awareness indicators, subtitle customization, combat assists, and input remapping. It also notes that some puzzle progression may not be fully accessible to blind or low-vision players and recommends puzzle skip in that circumstance. These options illustrate what one game provides; they are not a checklist every survival horror title will satisfy. PlayStation also describes accessibility features in its feature article.
EA’s Dead Space PS5 settings page shows how much a difficulty preset can alter: its Story, Easy, Medium, Hard, and Impossible options differ in player and enemy damage, oxygen duration, automatic healing, and enemy grappling. The page also lists quick-time-event input, sprint and aim toggles, automatic weapon swapping, and aim assistance. This describes that PS5 settings page, not every edition of Dead Space or other games.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCheck whether settings can be changed later
Do not assume an option is reversible just because it appears in a settings menu. Verify whether changing it affects only future play, changes puzzle content, restarts a chapter, or requires a new run.

- A dark, enthralling 4-5 hour narrative to keep you hooked and guessing until the end. Gorgeous visuals as you traverse numerous and diverse environments, presented with a cinematic, film-like aesthetic. Ranged and melee combat with upgradeable weapons to help you survive your nightmarish journey.
- A stellar voice cast, starring Valerie Rose Lohman (What Remains of Edith Finch, Wolfenstein: Youngblood), Jonah Scott (Dying Light 2: Stay Human, Date Everything), and Aleks Le (Persona 3: Reload, Marvel Rivals, Ghost of Yotei).
- A beautifully dynamic and haunting soundtrack composed and performed by Jacob Noska, and Jonah Henthorne: members of the band Auric Echoes.
- The puzzles you encounter are more than your standard key hunt. Project Songbird rewards those with an eye for detail, making each puzzle a challenge of creativity and wits.
- The combat of Project Songbird offers a variety of approaches inspired by the classics of the survival horror genre. Melee and gunplay is slow and weighty, and ammo is incredibly scarce. However, combat isn't your only option, as you have a multitude of tools at your disposal to aid in sneaking past any creatures that wish to do you harm.
- Silent Hill 2: Konami Support’s answer dated October 7, 2024 says combat difficulty can be adjusted later in the Setting menu, but puzzle difficulty affects game content and cannot be changed mid-playthrough. This applies to the support context described by Konami, not to every horror game.
- The Evil Within: The Xbox 360 manual says only Casual and Survival are available at the start, with additional difficulty settings unlocked after clearing the game. It says difficulty cannot be raised during gameplay, but can be lowered in Options; lowering it restarts the chapter. The manual describes Casual as recommended for first-time survival-horror players. This is a historical example for that release, not guidance for other editions.
For your game, check its current in-game menu and official support documentation before choosing a setting that could affect progression.
A practical way to set up a playthrough
- Pick your priority. Decide whether you want the emphasis on atmosphere, exploration, resource tension, combat, or puzzles.
- Identify the friction point. Is it enemy encounters, repeated inputs, unclear navigation, sensory cues, puzzle progression, or failure penalties?
- Change the narrowest relevant option. Prefer an independent assist or mechanic setting over a broad preset when both are available and you want to preserve other challenges.
- Check the consequences first. Look for warnings about locked choices, changed content, chapter restarts, or settings that can only be lowered.
- Revisit settings when possible. If the experience is not working for you, adjust the specific source of friction—provided the game permits changes during play.
There is no universal best preset. The useful choice is the one that preserves the parts of survival horror you want while making its particular obstacles workable.
