Choose a Lewmar Claw by checking the manufacturer’s chart, then account for your boat’s displacement and windage, expected seabed and weather, anchoring rode, and bow-roller fit. The chart is guidance rather than a guarantee; Lewmar’s Catalogue Edition 14 says, “If in doubt, move up a model.” A Claw is designed for use across multiple seabed types, but it is not equally suited to every bottom or situation.

Start with Lewmar’s Claw sizing chart

Lewmar’s Marine Equipment Guide, Catalogue Edition 14 includes a Claw selection chart covering anchor weights from 1 kg (2.2 lb) to 80 kg (176 lb) and boat-length headings from 20 ft to 90 ft. Consult the chart itself for the recommended model for your boat: the available text version does not show the shaded weight-to-length pairings, so those pairings cannot be reliably reproduced here. Lewmar says lighter shading marks the upper limit of a model and advises, “If in doubt, move up a model.” It describes the chart as guidance and points readers to relevant classification requirements. View Lewmar’s Marine Equipment Guide, Catalogue Edition 14.

Check more than boat length

Boat length is a useful starting point, not a complete sizing method. West Marine’s general anchor guide also calls out boat weight or displacement, windage, the places you anchor, and the weather you expect. Its claw ranges below are retailer guidelines—not Lewmar’s chart—and West Marine directs buyers to the specific anchor manufacturer’s recommendations.

Boat length Approximate boat weight West Marine claw-weight guideline
Up to 20 ft Up to 2,500 lb 7–10 lb
20–25 ft 2,500–5,000 lb 10–15 lb
25–35 ft 5,000–10,000 lb 15–25 lb
35–45 ft 10,000–20,000 lb 25–35 lb
45–60 ft 20,000–40,000 lb 35–55 lb
Over 60 ft Over 40,000 lb 55 lb or more

These figures are West Marine’s general guidelines; the guide does not attach a publication date to them. A boat with substantial windage or use in more demanding conditions may need a different choice than its length alone suggests. Use the ranges to inform your decision, then check Lewmar’s current visual chart and the requirements relevant to your boat and use. Read West Marine’s anchor selection guide.

Match the Claw to your seabed and conditions

Lewmar describes its one-piece Claw as designed for multiple seabed types and says it stows on the bow roller of most boats. Those are manufacturer claims, not a guarantee of performance in every bottom or weather condition. West Marine says claw anchors set easily and work in most conditions, while noting difficulty on hard bottoms and in heavy grass. Its listing for a particular 4.4 lb Claw separately warns of limited holding power in mud. Together, those qualifications are a reason to consider the seabed you actually use rather than treating “all-purpose” as universal suitability.

Lewmar’s catalogue describes the Claw as “constructed of high-grade steel cast in a single piece” and says it “sets effortlessly, holds in a variety of seabeds and stows easily on the bow roller of most boats.” Treat this as Lewmar’s product description, not an independent holding-power test. The reviewed sources do not establish an independently controlled Claw-specific holding-power figure. Lewmar offers galvanized and stainless Claw variants; the available sources do not establish a like-for-like price or lifespan advantage for either material. See Lewmar’s Claw Stainless Steel Anchor page.

Check the whole anchoring system

The anchor works with its rode and the boat’s attachment points; choosing a model does not size those components automatically. Lewmar’s LFX safe-anchoring guide recommends a short section of steel chain with three-strand nylon line, explaining that chain helps keep the shank horizontal and nylon absorbs shock. This is guidance in an LFX document, not a Claw-specific rode specification. Size the rode, shackle, and strong points for your boat and expected use. Consult Lewmar’s LFX Assembly Instructions & Safe Anchoring Guide.

Scope and setting

Lewmar’s LFX guide defines scope as rode length divided by water depth and recommends at least 5:1 in that guide. Its measurements are based on waterline and should account for both draft and deck height. A more horizontal pull helps the anchor set; follow the guide’s advice to set gently and increase engine pull gradually. The 5:1 recommendation is guide-specific advice, not a guarantee for every anchoring situation.

Use product listings as examples, not universal sizing rules

West Marine lists a high-tensile steel, 4.4 lb (2 kg) Lewmar Bruce-style Claw, manufacturer part 0057902, for boats 13 to 16 ft. That is one retailer’s application for one product, not a general recommendation for every boat in that length range. Check the Lewmar chart alongside your boat’s displacement, windage, conditions, rode, and fit. West Marine’s same listing notes limited holding power in mud. See the West Marine 4.4 lb Claw listing.
