For ordinary storage, leave allocation unit size at its default. Windows selects a default based on the volume size, and Microsoft says default settings are recommended for general use. Choose a different value only when a filesystem-specific requirement or measured workload justifies it.

What allocation unit size means

An allocation unit, also called a cluster, is the filesystem’s unit for allocating space to files. A file occupies space in these units, and some filesystem limits depend on the cluster size. The appropriate value therefore depends on the filesystem and what the drive will do—not just on the drive’s capacity.

For example, Microsoft documents a 4 KB default cluster size for NTFS, but that figure does not apply to every filesystem or operating system. FAT, FAT32, exFAT, NTFS, and ReFS have different supported allocation-unit values. See Microsoft’s Windows format command reference.

How to choose

General storage: keep the default

If you have no special application, service, or workload requirement, do not specify an allocation unit size. Windows chooses one based on volume size. Microsoft’s format documentation states: “Default settings are recommended for general use.”

NTFS for large VHDX files or Data Deduplication: check Microsoft’s specific guidance

Microsoft’s NTFS overview documents a 64 KB allocation unit size with Large FRS for certain volumes hosting large VHDX files or Data Deduplication. This is a scenario-specific example, not a general performance recommendation. Check the relevant Windows release, application, and service constraints before using it.

Removable or shared drives: choose the filesystem first

When a drive must work with particular computers or devices, first determine which filesystem they support. Allocation-unit options vary by filesystem, and the cited Microsoft documentation does not identify one best size for every cross-device use case.

Performance tuning: require workload-specific evidence

The available Microsoft documentation does not establish that a larger allocation unit universally improves speed. If performance is the reason for changing the value, compare options using the actual filesystem and workload rather than assuming a larger cluster is faster.

What changes with NTFS cluster size?

Microsoft’s NTFS overview lists 16 TB at a 4 KB cluster size and 256 TB at 64 KB for maximum volume and file sizes in the table’s stated context. These are documented limits, not guarantees that any device or application can use volumes or files of those sizes. The page notes that supported maximums depend on the Windows release and that applications or services may impose lower limits.

The same overview documents higher supported values with larger cluster sizes. Do not select a size based on the table alone: account for the particular Windows version and any application or service limits that apply.

Supported values and Windows formatting options

Windows’ format command accepts /A:<size> to specify an allocation unit size. The documented values differ by filesystem:

Filesystem Allocation-unit values listed by Microsoft
FAT and FAT32 512 bytes through 64 KB; 128 KB and 256 KB are also listed for sector sizes over 512 bytes
NTFS 512 bytes through 2 MB
exFAT 12 bytes and values from 1 KB through 32 MB
ReFS 4 KB and 64 KB

These are documented options, not a recommendation to use the largest available value. Confirm the applicable Windows and filesystem constraints before overriding the default. Microsoft’s exFAT specification describes clusters as consecutive sectors and an allocation bitmap that records whether clusters are allocated; its maximum cluster size of 32 MB does not, by itself, make that size preferable for a particular drive.

Using the format command

  1. Open Command Prompt with the permissions needed for the target volume.
  2. Use the format command’s /A:<size> option to specify a supported allocation-unit size for the chosen filesystem. Check the command’s documentation for the applicable syntax and constraints.
  3. Before confirming the operation, verify that the target is the intended volume and that needed data is backed up.

Using PowerShell

PowerShell’s Format-Volume cmdlet formats volumes and exposes the -AllocationUnitSize parameter. Microsoft also documents -UseLargeFRS with a 65536-byte allocation-unit size for the specified NTFS scenarios involving Data Deduplication or large VHDX files. Formatting is consequential; confirm the target volume and preserve needed data before running a formatting operation.

Decision checklist

  • No special requirement: leave allocation unit size unspecified and use the filesystem default.
  • Large VHDX files or Data Deduplication on NTFS: consult Microsoft’s NTFS guidance for the documented 64 KB and Large FRS scenario, and check system and application limits.
  • Drive shared across devices: identify compatible filesystems first; do not assume the same allocation-unit setting works across filesystems.
  • Seeking faster performance: change the default only if evidence from the actual workload supports the change.
