Rather than present a historical winner list as fact, this guide explains how to choose monitors for your room and listening distance, then compares two current ADAM Audio examples using their manufacturers’ published specifications.
Start with your room and listening distance
A studio monitor is a reference tool for recording, mixing, and broadcasting. Its job is to reveal the source, but the room and listening position affect what you hear as much as the speaker does. Genelec’s monitor-selection guidance recommends beginning with listening distance and the size of the listening area, then considering output capability and room volume.
As Genelec explains, “A larger listening distance requires a larger maximum sound output capacity in the monitoring product.” In free-field conditions, sound level drops 6 dB when distance doubles; doubling amplifier power increases it by 3 dB. These are general acoustical guidelines from the manufacturer, not product performance ratings.
- Listening distance and area: Choose a system suited to how far you sit from the speakers and how wide an area needs consistent monitoring.
- Output: Match maximum output to that distance and your working level. Woofer diameter alone does not establish usable output.
- Room interaction: Consider the room, speaker orientation, boundary distance, and whether you can position the cabinets appropriately. Controlled directivity can help reduce room influence at the listening position.
- Connections and fit: Confirm that your interface outputs match the monitors’ inputs and that the cabinets fit where they can be positioned correctly.
Genelec’s room-volume tables are manufacturer guidance, not universal rules for every room or brand. The available sources do not establish a category-wide market statistic or a universal monitor size for a particular room.

Decide how much bass your system needs
Do not select a monitor on a frequency-response number alone. Compare the manufacturer’s stated response and its measurement tolerance, then consider your room, listening distance, workflow, and whether you plan to use a subwoofer. Specifications from different brands may use different measurement conditions, so their numbers may not be directly comparable.
Without a subwoofer, the main monitors’ low-frequency cutoff and the room’s acoustics influence bass reproduction. A subwoofer can extend the system’s low-frequency reach and take content below the system crossover away from the main monitors. If you add one, account for crossover and integration with the monitors; it is not automatically necessary for every setup. ADAM Audio T7V
ADAM describes the T7V as a two-way nearfield monitor. Its stated response reaches 39 Hz at -6 dB, and its maximum SPL is at least 110 dB per pair at 1 m. Its XLR and RCA inputs are relevant if you are matching it to an interface or other analog source.

ADAM Audio T8V
ADAM describes the T8V as a powered two-way monitor with an 8-inch woofer. Its stated response reaches 33 Hz at -6 dB, and its maximum SPL is at least 118 dB per pair at 1 m. It also has XLR and RCA inputs.
On those published specifications, the T8V offers more stated bass reach and pair output than the T7V. That does not make it the better choice for every room: distance, working level, placement, and system needs still matter. The comparison does not establish how either model performs in a particular room or how they sound against other brands.

A practical selection checklist
- Measure your listening distance and define the listening area. Use those needs as the starting point for system capability rather than choosing by woofer size.
- Check output capability. Select for your distance and working level; do not assume a larger woofer alone guarantees the output you need.
- Decide whether you need a subwoofer. If you do, account for the crossover and integration. If you do not, consider the monitor’s low-frequency cutoff alongside room acoustics.
- Compare response figures carefully. Keep the stated tolerance attached to each figure and avoid treating different manufacturers’ specifications as directly equivalent when test conditions differ.
- Check placement and compatibility. Make sure the cabinets can be positioned sensibly and the monitor inputs work with your interface outputs.
