There is no game-specific “best” setting to recommend yet: the RPG is not identified, so its graphics modes and HDR or VRR support cannot be confirmed. If the game offers performance and resolution/quality modes, choose performance for smoother motion or resolution/quality for image detail, then compare them in the same scene on your own display. PS5 presets only express a preference among modes a game actually offers. HDR and VRR are separate settings, and a 120 Hz console output does not mean this RPG runs at 120 frames per second.

The practical starting point is to check what the game offers before changing console settings or shopping for equipment. Then test the available modes on the display you already use. A new TV, monitor or cable is not a prerequisite for selecting an in-game performance mode; a purchase is relevant only if your existing setup cannot supply a feature you specifically want.

Which PS5 graphics mode should I choose?

Choose performance if smoother motion matters more to you; choose resolution or quality if fine image detail matters more. That advice applies only if the game itself offers those options. PlayStation Support’s guidance on game presets is explicit: “This applies only to games that offer these modes.”

Because the RPG is unnamed, there is no reliable way to say which modes it includes, what each mode changes, or whether one is its default. Do not infer those details from the game being new, from the PS5’s output capabilities, or from a console-level preference. If the game offers more than two modes, use its own names and descriptions rather than assuming that labels such as “balanced,” “quality,” or “performance” mean the same thing in every game.

Think of the choice as a trade-off in what you notice while playing, rather than a universal quality ranking. One player may prefer motion that looks smoother during camera turns; another may care more about seeing fine detail in a still view. Your display, viewing conditions and personal preference all affect which difference matters to you. The available information does not establish a frame rate, resolution target or measured advantage for this particular RPG.

To make a practical choice, compare both options in a repeatable situation:

  1. First, find out whether the game actually has a mode choice. Look in its graphics or display menu and read the descriptions. If there is only one option, the PS5 preset cannot create another.
  2. Choose a scene you can revisit, such as an area with a broad view, moving characters and readable fine detail. Use the same scene in each mode so that you are comparing like with like.
  3. Watch a camera pan and a brief combat encounter in each mode. Notice whether motion looks smoother to you and whether actions feel more responsive. Treat these as your observations, not as a technical measurement.
  4. Look at the same scene for detail. Consider edges, distant objects and small visual elements that matter to you. Avoid switching scenes between comparisons, since different lighting or scenery can make the comparison less useful.
  5. Pick the option that suits your priorities. If the game has a separate graphics or display menu, check its own description of each mode; do not rely on what another game calls the same mode.

This is a personal comparison, not a benchmark: without the game’s identity and verified mode descriptions, numerical frame-rate or resolution claims would be speculation. If you are uncertain, start with the mode whose stated priority sounds closer to yours, play for a while, and revisit the same scene before deciding whether to change it.

Performance mode or resolution mode: a quick comparison

The table is a decision aid, not a claim about what this RPG delivers. It assumes the game offers the named choices; the exact effects depend on the game’s own implementation, which is not confirmed here.

What you care about Starting point What to check
Smoother-looking motion Performance, if offered Watch camera movement and combat in the same scene.
Fine image detail Resolution or quality, if offered Compare small details and distant objects in a repeatable view.
A mode absent from the game No PS5 preset can add it Confirm available choices in the game’s menu and official description.
HDR output Check the display and PS5 HDR controls Confirm game support separately; calibrate for your display.
VRR output Check PS5 and display compatibility Results may vary by game and selected visual mode.
120 Hz output Check display, input and connection A 120 Hz signal does not prove the game renders at 120 frames per second.
Whether to buy equipment Usually, check your current setup first Buy only if the existing display or connection cannot supply the feature you want.

How do I set a PS5 game preset?

The PS5 can save a preferred mode for games that offer one, but the preset cannot add a mode missing from a particular game. It is a starting preference for supported choices, not a promise that every title will expose identical options or use the preference in the same way.

  1. On the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
  2. Go to Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
  3. Select Game Presets.
  4. Choose Performance Mode or Resolution Mode and set the preference you want.

Menu wording or availability may vary with system software. If the game offers a relevant mode choice, the preference may help avoid choosing it again as a starting point; if the game has no such choice, the preset does not add one. If a title offers additional choices or uses different labels, consult its own menu and documentation rather than treating the console preset as a complete description of its graphics settings.

For a clean test, note your current choice before changing it. Use the same scene and display setup to compare what you see, and return to the console preset or the game’s menu if the result is not what you expected. You do not need to alter HDR or VRR just to compare performance and resolution modes; those are separate considerations.

How do I adjust HDR on PS5?

HDR is configured in the PS5’s video-output settings, but it also depends on a display that supports HDR and on the game’s own implementation. A console HDR setting alone cannot make an unsupported display or game provide the same HDR result. Confirm all three parts—the console output, the display and the game—rather than treating an HDR toggle as proof that the title uses HDR.

  1. Confirm that the connected TV or monitor supports HDR and that the PS5 is connected to an appropriate input on the display.
  2. On the console, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output.
  3. Review the HDR setting and select Adjust HDR to follow the on-screen calibration.
  4. Check the game’s own display settings, if present, and view the result in the conditions in which you normally play.

There is no universal brightness value to recommend: displays, room lighting and viewing conditions differ. Follow the console’s on-screen adjustment rather than copying a number intended for a different screen. If you change the display or move to a different viewing environment, assess the result again instead of assuming a previous adjustment will look identical.

If the image looks wrong after adjustment, revisit the console calibration and the display’s HDR settings rather than assuming the game has a particular HDR implementation. Also check whether the game offers its own HDR controls. The exact availability and behavior of those controls cannot be confirmed until the RPG and its edition are identified. Do not diagnose a game-specific HDR problem solely from the fact that the PS5 menu has an HDR option.

Why isn’t VRR available, and should I turn it on?

Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) needs a compatible display and a suitable connection. PlayStation describes VRR as synchronizing the display’s refresh with graphical output; whether it helps, and how it looks, can depend on the TV or monitor, the game and the selected visual mode. VRR is separate from the game’s choice between performance and resolution, so enabling it does not select a graphics mode for you.

Check the PS5’s VRR setting and your display’s compatibility. Confirm that you are using an input and connection capable of the feature you want. A game that supports VRR may use it when the console and display are configured appropriately, but support cannot be assumed for this unnamed RPG or every one of its modes.

The console also has an option to apply VRR to unsupported games; that is distinct from ordinary VRR use with supported games. If you choose to try the optional setting and a particular title behaves unexpectedly, turn it back off and compare again. Keep the test focused: change one setting at a time, revisit the same scene and decide whether the result is preferable. That approach makes it easier to tell whether the change helped without confusing it with a mode or display adjustment.

VRR does not raise a game’s maximum frame rate or repair every performance issue. It should not be treated as a guarantee of smoother behavior, nor as a replacement for checking what the game actually supports. PlayStation notes that results depend on the display, game and visual mode; the right conclusion for an individual player is therefore based on compatibility and the observed result, not on the feature name alone.

Does 120 Hz output mean the RPG runs at 120 fps?

No. A PS5 video-output setting or a display’s 120 Hz capability describes a possible output configuration, not the frame rate rendered by an individual game. The RPG would need to support the relevant mode for any game-specific high-frame-rate claim to apply. Without its identity and official feature information, do not assume 120 fps from a “performance” label or a 120 Hz signal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep three questions separate: does the display accept the output you want, is the console connected through a suitable input and connection, and does this game offer a mode that uses the feature? A “yes” to the first question does not answer the third. Likewise, a console setting showing a particular output capability is not a benchmark of the game’s rendering performance.

If 120 Hz is unavailable, start with the display’s stated capabilities and the input currently in use. Then review the HDMI connection and try the cable supplied with the console before considering a replacement. There is no basis to buy a new cable or display simply because an unidentified RPG has no visible high-frame-rate option.

What should I check if a setting or feature is missing?

Check the game before changing hardware: the game must offer a graphics mode, and the display must support the console feature you want. A missing in-game performance mode is not fixed by buying a new cable or display. Work from the simplest explanation to the more involved one, and verify each part separately.

  • Performance or resolution option missing: Look in the game’s own graphics or display menu and confirm that the game actually offers a choice. The PS5 preset only applies to offered modes. If the game has a single presentation or different mode names, use those actual descriptions rather than expecting a universal set of labels.
  • HDR unavailable or not behaving as expected: Verify display HDR support, revisit Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output, and use Adjust HDR. Check the game’s own HDR options if it has them. The console setting does not confirm that the game implements HDR.
  • VRR unavailable: Confirm that the TV or monitor supports VRR and review the console setting. Check which input is in use and the HDMI connection. If trying the option for unsupported games causes unexpected behavior, revert that optional setting and compare.
  • 120 Hz unavailable: Confirm the display supports the desired output and check the input being used. Review the connection and test with the supplied cable before considering replacement. Do not confuse an unavailable output feature with the game’s frame rate.
  • Still no feature after checking the connection: Confirm the display’s supported features and input requirements from its manufacturer. A replacement display is only relevant if the current one cannot provide the feature you want; it is not a prerequisite for choosing a game’s performance mode.

If a different cable is genuinely needed, verify the display and connection requirements first; an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable is a possible category to investigate, not an automatic fix. Try the cable supplied with the console and check the connection before spending money. No particular replacement cable, brand, listing or price is established here, so a specific purchase recommendation would not be justified.

The same restraint applies to a display upgrade. A VRR-compatible 4K TV or VRR-compatible gaming monitor may be a category to consider if your current display lacks a feature you want, but no specific model is recommended. Check the exact model’s supported features and input requirements before buying. You do not need a VRR-capable display merely to choose an in-game performance mode, and a display purchase cannot add graphics modes that the game itself does not offer.

What can be recommended before the RPG is identified?

Only a conditional PS5-wide starting point: select performance for motion or resolution/quality for detail when the game offers both, set HDR through the console’s video-output menu and calibrate for your display, and enable VRR only when your display is compatible. Before treating any of these as game-specific advice, identify the exact RPG and edition and confirm its official graphics modes and HDR/VRR support. Patches and editions can affect feature support, so check information for the version you will play.

The most useful information for a specific recommendation is the exact title and edition, followed by the game’s official description of its graphics modes and confirmation of HDR and VRR support. If the advice is meant for a patched version, identify that version as well. Until those details are known, a confident claim about the game’s default mode, target frame rate, resolution, HDR implementation or VRR behavior would go beyond what can be verified.

In the meantime, use your current setup. Compare offered modes in a consistent scene, adjust HDR through the PS5 and your display where supported, and check VRR compatibility independently. If a feature is missing, troubleshoot the game, display, input and HDMI connection before considering a purchase. That gives you a sensible starting point without mistaking a console capability for a promise about an unidentified game.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does PS5 HDR make a game look like it has HDR if the game doesn’t support it?

No. The console’s HDR output setting does not establish that a particular game implements HDR. Confirm support for the game itself, and remember that the display must also support HDR and be configured appropriately.

Can I use VRR on a PS5 game that doesn’t officially support it?

The PS5 offers an option to apply VRR to unsupported games, separate from VRR use in supported titles. Results can vary by game, display and visual mode, so disable that optional setting again if an individual game behaves unexpectedly.

Does a 120 Hz TV mean this RPG will run at 120 fps?

No. A 120 Hz display or PS5 output describes a display capability, not the frame rate rendered by a game. The title would need to offer and support a relevant mode; that is not confirmed for this unnamed RPG.

Why can’t I select performance mode in the PS5 Game Presets menu?

The preset expresses a preference for modes games offer; it cannot add a mode that is absent from a game. Check the title’s own graphics or display menu and use its actual options and descriptions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need to buy a new HDMI cable for VRR or 120 Hz?

Not necessarily. First check display compatibility, the selected input and the HDMI connection, and try the cable supplied with the console. Consider a replacement only after verifying the requirements of your display and connection.

Do I need a VRR-compatible display to use performance mode?

No. VRR compatibility is separate from a game’s performance or resolution mode. A new display is relevant only if your current one cannot provide a feature you want; it cannot add a mode the game does not offer.

What information do I need to get settings advice for this RPG specifically?

The exact game title and edition are the starting point; its official graphics-mode descriptions and HDR/VRR feature information are also needed. A patch or edition may affect what options are available, so advice should match the version you plan to play.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Start with the game’s actual options: performance for smoother motion or resolution/quality for detail, if those modes exist. Adjust HDR in PS5 video-output settings only with a compatible display, and treat VRR and 120 Hz as separate compatibility questions—not proof of a particular game frame rate. Check your current display, input and supplied HDMI cable before spending money. The exact RPG, edition and official feature support must be confirmed before any game-specific recommendation is reliable.
