To choose an open-world game with less mature content, first decide which material you want to avoid—such as realistic violence, gore, sexual content, strong language, substances, or gambling—then check the exact game’s official age rating, content descriptors, detailed rating summary, and online-feature notices. In the United States, the ESRB system offers a useful screening method, but no age category or descriptor set is a complete inventory of everything a game contains.
Start with the content you want to limit
“Less mature” is not one universal standard. A player may be comfortable with fantasy combat but want to avoid sexual content or strong language; another may care most about gore, realistic violence, substance use, or interaction with strangers online. Write down your own boundaries before comparing games so you do not treat a broad age label as a personal content verdict.

- Violence: Decide whether stylized or fantasy combat is acceptable, or whether you want to avoid realistic, intense, or frequent violence.
- Blood and gore: Consider whether any blood is a concern, or whether your boundary is graphic injury or gore.
- Sexual material: Check for nudity, sexual content, and suggestive themes separately; they are not interchangeable.
- Language and humor: Consider strong language, crude humor, or both.
- Other content: Include substances and simulated gambling if they matter to your decision.
- Online experience: Decide whether user interaction, purchases, location sharing, or unrestricted internet access are acceptable. These are separate from the content rating.
Use the U.S. age rating as a first screen
In the U.S. ESRB system, Teen (T) is generally suitable for ages 13 and up. A Teen game may include violence, suggestive themes, crude humor, minimal blood, simulated gambling, and/or infrequent strong language. Mature (M) is intended for ages 17 and up and may include intense violence, blood and gore, sexual content, and/or strong language. These categories describe broad suitability, not a guarantee that a game does or does not contain a particular element. See the ESRB ratings guide for the category definitions.
A lower age category can help narrow a search, but it cannot resolve every personal boundary. If you want to avoid a specific kind of content, check the descriptors and any fuller summary rather than relying on the category alone.

Read the content descriptors against your own checklist
ESRB content descriptors identify content that may have triggered a rating or may be relevant to a player or parent. As the ESRB guide puts it, “Content Descriptors indicate content that may have triggered a particular rating and/or may be of interest or concern.” They are useful clues, not a complete inventory; the guide explicitly says descriptors are not intended to list all content. Review the ESRB descriptor definitions and look for the areas that match your concerns, including violence, blood/gore, language, nudity, sexuality, substances, gambling, and humor.
Compare each candidate using the same questions: How intense or realistic is the violence? Is blood present, and is it graphic? Are nudity or sexual themes indicated? What language or humor is described? Are substances or gambling present? A descriptor can flag an area to investigate, but its absence should not be treated as proof that a game contains none of the material you are screening for.

Look for a detailed rating summary
For many physical games, ESRB provides a rating summary with more detail and context than the category and descriptors alone. Search the title in the ESRB ratings database or use the ESRB mobile app. The summary can help clarify why a game received its rating and what the flagged content involves.
Digital games rated through the International Age Rating Coalition (IARC) process do not receive ESRB Rating Summaries. In that case, use the official rating listing and descriptors available for the game, then consult the platform’s own information or parental controls if you need additional limits. Check online and interactive features separately
ESRB interactive elements can disclose features such as user interaction, location sharing, in-game purchases, or unrestricted internet access. These notices do not affect the assigned content rating. A game with a rating that suits your content preferences may still have online or spending features you want to restrict; treat the two checks as separate decisions. Device and platform parental controls can help enforce household preferences, including restrictions by rating, play-time limits, purchase management, and limits on internet access. Their exact names and availability vary by device and platform; consult the relevant system’s settings rather than assuming one control applies everywhere. ESRB provides a general overview of parental controls.

Verify the exact edition and region before deciding
Ratings attach to particular products and may differ by region. Search the official rating database for the exact title and the version or platform you plan to play; do not assume that a similarly named edition has identical content or rating information. This method uses the U.S. ESRB system and does not establish a cross-region list of suitable open-world games. For another country or territory, check the rating authority and store listing that apply there.
There is no single current shortlist that can be responsibly inferred from these rating principles alone. To answer “Which open-world games have less violence or sexual content?” accurately, compare verified listings for the specific games and editions under consideration against your own checklist.

What the ratings figures do—and do not—tell you
Hart Research Associates reported in 2025, as credited by ESRB, that 83% of parents with children who play video games were aware of ESRB ratings and 77% regularly checked ratings before buying a game. Separately, ESRB reported that 65% of ratings assigned to physical and console downloadable video games in 2024 were E or E10+. Those figures describe ratings awareness and assignments broadly; they do not measure open-world games or show which titles meet an individual player’s content preferences.
