For a prerecorded YouTube livestream replay, choose mid-rolls in the video’s monetization settings in YouTube Studio—not with the live broadcast’s ad-break interval controls. If the replay is monetized and at least eight minutes long, you can use automatic slots, manual slots, or both. Start with automatic placements if you want a lower-effort baseline, then review the timeline and keep breaks that fit natural pauses or transitions.
Choose an approach that fits the replay
YouTube supports automatic ad slots, manual ad slots, and manual slots supplemented by automatic placements for eligible long videos. The right choice depends on how much control you want and whether interruptions fit the content.
| Setting | What it does | When it may fit |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic slots | YouTube proposes placements at potential breakpoints. | You want less manual work and can review the proposed positions against the replay. |
| Manual slots | You choose specific points on the video timeline where an ad may serve. | You know where the recording has pauses or transitions and want to choose those points. |
| Manual plus automatic | Your manual placements are supplemented by automatic opportunities. | You want to mark important breaks but also let YouTube identify other possible ones. |
| Mid-rolls off | No mid-roll slots are configured. | Interruptions would undermine the experience—for example, in meditation content or another format that depends on continuous attention. |
YouTube’s guidance does not prescribe a universal number of slots or a fixed spacing interval for prerecorded videos. Make choices based on the replay’s actual structure rather than applying a generic schedule. YouTube’s guide to managing mid-roll ad breaks in long videos explains the available approaches.
Set up and review mid-rolls in YouTube Studio
- Check eligibility and monetization. The video must be monetized, and mid-roll ads can be enabled on monetized videos that are at least eight minutes long. Check the channel and video’s monetization status; eligibility and advertiser suitability can affect whether ads run.
- Open the video’s monetization settings on desktop. In YouTube Studio, open the prerecorded video’s Monetization settings and turn on “Show mid-roll ads during my video” if interruptions suit the content.
- Use automatic placements as a starting point if appropriate. Review the proposed slots rather than assuming they all fit. Watch the replay or scrub its timeline, paying attention to what is happening immediately before and after each placement.
- Open Manage ad slots to edit the timeline. Add, move, or delete manual slots so they fall near natural pauses, visual transitions, or changes of topic. If you want YouTube to look for additional opportunities, leave automatic slots enabled alongside your manual choices.
- Consider Studio’s feedback. YouTube Studio can flag manual slots that are unlikely to serve. Treat that as a signal to consider moving a slot to a more natural breakpoint—not as a prediction of guaranteed delivery.
- Save the settings. Revisit the video’s monetization settings if you later want to change the configuration or turn mid-rolls off.
Place breaks where the viewing flow allows them
Use the recording itself to judge interruption risk. A pause between segments, a visual transition, or a change of topic may provide a more suitable break than an uninterrupted moment. A slot placed in the middle of a sentence, demonstration, or action can disrupt the viewing experience and is less likely to serve, according to YouTube’s guidance on how ads work on videos.

A configured slot creates an opportunity for an ad; it does not guarantee that YouTube will show one. YouTube considers factors including slot quality, advertiser demand, and viewer experience. The live-stream guidance’s reported performance comparison applies to live automatic mid-roll settings, not to prerecorded replays, so it should not be treated as a revenue forecast for this workflow.
Keep prerecorded video controls separate from live ad breaks
A replay of a livestream is managed as a video: its mid-roll settings are placements on the video timeline. Automatic, scheduled, or manual ad-break controls for an active broadcast belong to the live-stream workflow. Do not set a live-stream frequency or interval expecting it to configure mid-roll slots on a prerecorded replay. See YouTube’s separate instructions for monetizing a live stream.

Check monetization and advertiser suitability
Turning on mid-roll settings does not override monetization eligibility or advertiser suitability. A video must be in a position to monetize, and advertiser-unfriendly content may receive limited or no ads. Some content may be age-restricted and ineligible for monetization. For the applicable computer workflow and monetization options, see YouTube’s monetization settings guidance.
