Choose a LEGO set by starting with its age label, then checking whether the build, theme, and intended use suit the person who will build it. Age is a useful first filter—not a guarantee of ability—and piece count alone does not tell you how difficult a set will feel.

What LEGO’s age labels mean

LEGO’s US age navigation groups sets into six categories: 1.5+, 4+, 6+, 9+, 13+, and 18+. LEGO describes these as broad product categories, not as a universal measure of building skill. The labels and descriptions below come from LEGO’s age-range guidance.

Age label How LEGO describes the category What to consider when choosing
1.5+ LEGO presents it as a preschool introduction. Use the label as the first check for a very young builder; consider whether the set’s play experience fits the child.
4+ More detailed than the youngest sets while remaining easy to build. For a newer builder, look for the manageable steps and illustrative instructions LEGO describes for this range.
6+ Emphasizes imaginative play, storytelling, and building and rebuilding characters. Consider whether the recipient will enjoy inventing stories and changing the build during play.
9+ Larger sets that require more patience and offer a greater sense of accomplishment and more longevity for play and rebuilding. Think about comfort with longer builds and multi-step instructions, rather than relying on piece count as a difficulty score.
13+ Detailed sets intended to inspire and challenge teenagers and adults. Consider the builder’s experience and interest in detail; the label does not establish an individual skill level.
18+ Complex sets for adult builders and collectors, including people seeking a challenge. Consider whether the recipient wants a more involved build, a display model, or both.

These are LEGO’s own category descriptions, not independent developmental findings. A person may be ready for a build outside the category that matches their age, but the label remains a sensible starting point—especially when selecting a set for a young child.

How to match a set to the builder

  1. Check the age mark. Look at the set’s box or current LEGO product page. Use the marked age range as an initial filter, not as a prediction of exactly how quickly or independently someone will build.
  2. Consider the instruction experience. Think about whether the builder is comfortable following illustrated steps, sorting and handling pieces, and correcting a missed step. LEGO specifically describes 4+ builds as divided into manageable chunks, with illustrative booklet instructions and pre-painted decorations instead of stickers. Its 4+ guidance includes examples from themes such as Bluey, Marvel, Disney, and NINJAGO; check the current product page for a set’s label and features.
  3. Be realistic about patience. LEGO’s 9+ description explicitly links larger sets with a greater need for patience. If a builder is new to LEGO or prefers shorter activities, favor a build that can be tackled in manageable sessions. Do not treat the number of pieces as a standalone difficulty rating.
  4. Choose a theme the recipient likes. Interest in a character, franchise, or subject can make the building and later play more appealing. It does not override the age label or the build demands, so use theme preference to distinguish between otherwise suitable options.
  5. Decide whether the set is for play, display, or both. LEGO’s descriptions point to imaginative play and rebuilding in the 6+ category, while its 18+ description includes collectors and people seeking a challenge. These suggest different experiences, not strict age boundaries.

A quick comparison checklist

When choosing between two or more sets, compare the characteristics that affect this recipient rather than looking for a single difficulty score:
