A suppressor can reduce noise exposure, but it does not make a firearm hearing-safe or make hearing protection optional. Choose the setup for reliable fit and seal first; consider electronic earmuffs only if communication or awareness is useful.
Why a suppressor does not replace hearing protection
Gunfire is impulsive noise: a brief, intense sound that can pose a hearing risk even when a firearm is fired only once. NIOSH says firearm peak sound pressure levels are usually sufficient to require hearing protection. Its examples range from 144 to 172 dB SPL across small-caliber weapons and a .357 revolver; that range is not a measurement for every firearm or setup. NIOSH’s firearms guidance recommends earplugs and earmuffs for shooting.
A 2018 NIOSH-indexed study measured suppressor-related reductions of 17–24 dB in peak sound pressure at the shooter’s ear, depending on firearm and ammunition. It also reported a 9–21 dB reduction in 8-hour equivalent A-weighted energy. Those are results under the study’s measured conditions, not guaranteed reductions for other firearms, ammunition, suppressors, or shooting positions. The study concluded that suppressed firearms can still pose significant hearing risk and advised firearm users to wear hearing protection while target shooting or hunting. Read the NIOSH-indexed study.
Choose a double-protection setup
For shooting, start with formable earplugs inserted correctly, then wear earmuffs over them. NIOSH recommends double protection for impulsive sounds such as weapons noise and specifically describes this combination for firearms. Do not treat the two layers as a guarantee of a particular protected sound level: actual protection depends on fit, seal, firearm, ammunition, position, and other conditions.

Earplugs
Foam earplugs are a practical category because they can be compressed for insertion and expand to fit the ear canal. Follow the product’s insertion instructions and ensure the plugs are seated deeply enough to form a seal. If they are loose, partly inserted, or uncomfortable enough that you keep adjusting or removing them, do not assume they provide their labelled performance.
Earmuffs
Wear shooting earmuffs over the plugs, with the cushions seated evenly against your head. Check for gaps around the full cushion. Hair, hats, and eyewear can interfere with the seal; in particular, NIOSH warns that safety glasses under earmuffs can create an acoustic leak and reduce performance. Adjust eyewear and earmuffs to preserve a seal without compromising required eye protection. NIOSH’s indoor firing-range guidance discusses noise control and hearing protection in range settings.

Compare protection setups by fit and use
| Setup | What to consider | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Earplugs alone | Protection depends on correct insertion and fit. The NIOSH firearms guidance recommends earplugs and earmuffs for shooting. | Not the preferred choice for shooting under the cited NIOSH guidance. |
| Earplugs plus passive earmuffs | Provides the recommended two-layer arrangement. Check plug insertion and the muff cushion seal, especially around eyewear. | A straightforward choice when communication features are not needed. |
| Earplugs plus electronic level-dependent earmuffs | Retains the earplug layer while adding level-dependent sound handling. NIOSH notes these earmuffs may be convenient for target practice or hunting; they do not replace plugs. | Useful when hearing conversation or other ordinary sounds is important while wearing earmuffs. |

Do not use a package rating to calculate your personal protection
A Noise Reduction Rating (NRR) on a package is not a promise of the reduction you will get in a particular shooting situation. NIOSH cautions that laboratory NRR results may overstate real-world workplace reduction; fit and fit-testing matter. Do not subtract a protector’s NRR from a firearm’s peak sound level to calculate your protected exposure. Peak impulse levels, duration, ammunition, firearm, position, plug fit, and earmuff seal are not interchangeable inputs for a universal calculation.

Account for the shooting setting
At an indoor range
Reflected sound and range conditions can add to the challenge of managing noise. Use both layers, confirm the eyewear and earmuff seal, and follow the range’s safety rules. The suppressor does not remove the need for this protection.
While hunting or shooting outdoors
Electronic level-dependent earmuffs may be convenient where communication or awareness matters. Keep the earplugs in place under them; convenience does not change the need for double protection against impulsive noise.

For occupational range work
A protector purchase alone is not a hearing conservation program. NIOSH’s indoor-range guidance addresses control of lead and noise in firing ranges; employers and range operators should consider the broader workplace controls and hearing-conservation requirements relevant to their setting.
Fit check before firing
- Insert each earplug according to its instructions and check that it is seated securely.
- Put on the earmuffs and position the cushions so they contact your head evenly.
- Check for gaps caused by eyewear, hair, or other items beneath the cushions; adjust the fit while maintaining eye protection.
- Keep both layers on while shooting. If either layer shifts or loses its seal, stop and restore the fit before continuing.
NIOSH’s hearing-protector guidance stresses that fit affects protection and says double protection is appropriate for impulsive sounds such as weapons noise.
