A secure heel and midfoot, room for your toes, and a stable, comfortable stride matter more than a universally “best” shoe. Spikeless designs suit many golfers on dry or firm ground; spikes may be a better fit for wet, soft, or hilly conditions.
Start with fit, not the sole or brand
A shoe can feel secure at the heel and still be a poor walking fit if it pinches your toes. Look for a snug heel and midfoot without painful pressure, plus enough room in the toe box for your toes to move. Cushioning is useful, but it cannot make an ill-fitting shoe comfortable over a round.
- Try shoes on with the socks you wear for golf.
- Measure both feet and use the larger foot as a starting point. Compare sizes and widths if the fit is uncertain.
- Walk around in each pair. Check that the heel stays in place, the shoe bends comfortably where your foot bends, and the base feels stable.
- Reject a pair that pinches or creates pressure, even if the heel feels secure.
Foot shape and comfort preferences differ, so do not assume that the softest shoe or a particular brand will suit you. Under Armour’s guide discusses fit, support, stability, and closure considerations (Under Armour golf-shoe guide); Golf Monthly says its walking-shoe buying guide considers comfort, construction, stability, grip, and waterproofing, and advises trying more than one option (Golf Monthly walking-shoe guide).
Match traction to the ground you usually walk
Spikeless shoes use molded outsole tread and are often a versatile choice for walking between the course and clubhouse. Spiked shoes are worth considering when you regularly face wet, muddy, soft, or sloped ground, or when grip is your priority. These are practical tendencies, not guarantees: actual traction depends on the shoe’s design and the conditions underfoot.

In an adidas article, Masun Denison, Global Footwear Director for adidas Golf, said spiked shoes are a strong option for golfers who play year-round, often encounter wet or muddy conditions, have a high swing speed, and want maximum grip. He also cited comfort and versatility as reasons spikeless shoes are popular. These are manufacturer perspectives, not independent testing (adidas on spiked versus spikeless golf shoes).
Judge walking comfort by the whole shoe
For a walking round, consider cushioning alongside support, heel hold, sole stability, and flexibility where your foot bends. A very soft-feeling shoe is not automatically the most comfortable after sustained walking; try the pair on and walk in it before deciding. Acushnet Holdings Corp.’s 2025 annual report, filed in 2026, describes golf shoes as providing comfort, support, and protection over “over five miles” in an average walked round. That is Acushnet’s corporate description of the demands on golf footwear, not an independent measurement or a universal distance for every course (Acushnet 2025 annual report).

Check the exact waterproof claim and warranty
If you often play in morning dew or rain, look for a model explicitly labeled waterproof and read its warranty terms. “Waterproof,” “water resistant,” and “water repellent” are not interchangeable claims. adidas says its Climaproof golf shoes are seam-sealed and water resistant, while RAIN.RDY is its fully waterproof line; confirm the wording on the specific model’s current product page (adidas golf shoes).
Skechers says its waterproof-labeled models have a one-year waterproof warranty under normal use, while water-repellent-only models do not carry that warranty. Treat this as a manufacturer policy and verify the current terms for the particular shoe before buying (Skechers golf-shoe guide).

- Fit and width: Start with a secure heel and midfoot, comfortable pressure, and toe room; compare widths if needed.
- Walking comfort: Test cushioning, support, stability, and flexibility by walking in the shoes.
- Traction: Favor spikeless for versatility on firmer ground; consider spikes for recurring wet, soft, or sloped conditions.

Current recommendations and prices can change. Compare the current product page and, where useful, a current buying guide rather than treating a model ranking as permanent. For a broad starting point, search for “spikeless golf shoes for walking,” then filter by width, waterproofing, and your typical course conditions. If you are considering spikes, verify that replacements are available for that exact shoe model.
