Choose Steam Remote Play Together when a supported game’s local multiplayer is enough for your group and you want one player to host while friends join remotely. Choose the game’s native online co-op when its online mode better fits your group’s needs. Neither option is universally better: check the specific game’s modes, player limit, controls, invitations and ownership requirements before deciding.

What’s the difference?

Steam Remote Play Together streams a local game session

The host runs the game on their computer. Steam streams its video and audio to remote players and sends their inputs back to the host. This can let friends play supported local co-op or other local multiplayer games remotely, including games that do not have native online play. Steam describes the feature as streaming “within milliseconds using a fast internet connection,” but that is not a comparison with the game’s online mode. Steam Remote Play

Native online co-op is the game’s own online mode

Online co-op is implemented by the game itself. Its player capacity, supported platforms, progression, invitations and ownership requirements depend on that title. Steam’s general Remote Play information does not establish how a particular game’s online mode compares with its streamed local mode.

When should you choose Remote Play Together?

  • The game supports it. Check the game’s Steam store-page details; do not assume the feature works for every Steam game. Steam Remote Play Support
  • The local multiplayer mode suits your group. It is especially useful when a game has local co-op or split-screen play but no native online mode that works for your friends. Steam introduced the feature to make supported local multiplayer playable remotely. Introducing Steam Remote Play Together
  • One person can host. The host runs the game; Steam’s 2019 launch announcement says only the host needs to own and install it. Guests join the streamed session rather than each launching their own copy.
  • The game’s controls work for everyone. Players can use their own controllers, and the host can share or restrict keyboard and mouse access. Confirm that the game supports the inputs your group plans to use. A compatible controller may be useful, but buying one is not required if keyboard and mouse work for the game. Steam Remote Play

When should you choose native online co-op?

Prefer the game’s own online mode when it supports the way your group wants to play. Check the title’s current store listing and in-game options for player limits, platform support, invitations, progression and who needs to own the game. These are game-specific details, not qualities Steam establishes for online co-op as a whole.

Do not assume native online play is always faster or more reliable, or that Remote Play Together is always smoother. Steam’s feature pages describe the streaming approach and call for a fast connection, but they do not provide a controlled comparison of performance or quality against native online co-op.

Check these details before choosing

  1. Look for the support listing. Open the game’s Steam store page and check its details for Remote Play Together. If it is not listed, do not count on the feature.
  2. Decide whether streamed local play is sufficient. If the group specifically needs the game’s native online mode, check that mode’s requirements instead.
  3. Confirm who hosts and owns the game. With Remote Play Together, one player runs the game, and Steam’s 2019 announcement says that player is the only one who needs to own and install it.
  4. Check the game’s player count and input support. Steam’s 2019 launch announcement described Remote Play Together as supporting “Up to four players,or even more in ideal conditions.” That dated general statement is not a guarantee for every game; use the title’s own details to confirm its limit and controls. Steam’s 2019 announcement
  5. Consider the connection. The session is streamed, so each player needs a suitable connection for real-time play. Steam calls for a fast internet connection but does not give a minimum speed on its overview page; no universal broadband threshold can be inferred from that guidance.
  6. Check the invitation method on your devices. Steam’s current overview describes inviting Steam Friends. A 2021 announcement also described URL invitations through Steam or Steam Link and said that its invitation flow did not require a guest account. Treat that as a description of the flow at the time, not a guarantee for every current device or invitation. Remote Play Together: Invite Anyone!

Steam says Remote Play Together streams video, audio and voice between players. Its overview also says that friends see the game rather than the host’s desktop, and that the host can share or limit keyboard and mouse access. Steam Remote Play
