Choose PlayStation Plus Extra when it includes several games you want to play during the time you’ll subscribe, and you’ll use its other benefits. Buy a game separately when you want reliable access to one particular title over the long term, it is not in the current catalog, or the subscription would cost more than the games you expect to play. There is no universal break-even point: the answer depends on the games, prices, subscription period and value you place on Extra’s other benefits.
What you get with PlayStation Plus Extra
Extra includes the core PlayStation Plus benefits, including online multiplayer, monthly games, discounts and cloud storage, plus access to the Game Catalog and Ubisoft+ Classics. Sony lists the US plan as a recurring subscription that continues until canceled. Its displayed US prices, checked October 4, 2026, were $16.99 for one month, $43.99 for three months and $134.99 for twelve months. The catalog is a changing subscription library, not a collection of permanent purchases. Games are added regularly, and some have announced departure dates. Availability can vary by time, tier, region and platform, so check each title in the current local catalog and look for any published end date before subscribing for it. Sony explains how to access catalog titles in its PlayStation Plus access guide.
Compare the cost over the time you’ll actually play
Compare the price of Extra for your expected subscription period with the separate prices of the games you realistically plan to play. Use the relevant monthly, three-month or annual subscription price rather than automatically counting a full year. Then consider Extra’s other benefits separately: include those you would use or otherwise pay for, but do not assign them an assumed cash value.

- List the games. Write down the specific titles you intend to play, then verify each one in your current regional Game Catalog.
- Choose a realistic play window. Estimate how long you expect to need Extra to play those titles. A short subscription may not suit a game you expect to revisit over a long period.
- Check separate prices. Compare the current Store price for each game you would actually buy, in the edition and format you want.
- Account for benefits and access risk. Consider whether you value Extra’s other benefits, and whether you are comfortable losing catalog access if your membership ends or a game leaves.
This comparison is most favorable to Extra when several wanted games are available and you’ll play them within your subscription window. A separate purchase can make more sense when you mainly want one title, expect to replay it later, or do not want its availability tied to a subscription and catalog changes.
What happens when a game leaves the Game Catalog?
Catalog access depends on both an active membership and the game remaining available in the service. Sony’s FAQ answers “Are PlayStation Plus games mine to keep?” with: “Yes, for as long as you remain an active subscriber.” That condition is not permanent ownership: a downloaded catalog game remains subject to membership and catalog availability. Sony’s US PS Plus Usage Terms also say that included games and availability can change and vary by tier, region, platform and device.

If a catalog game leaves or your membership lapses, add-ons or similar consumables bought for that PlayStation Plus game may not be usable until you renew or buy the same game from the Store. This matters if you plan to spend extra on downloadable content for a catalog title; check the terms and the game’s status before relying on continued access.
Does buying a game separately mean you own it?
A separate purchase avoids dependence on the Extra catalog, but a digital purchase is still governed by Sony’s Store license and applicable local terms. In its US Terms of Service published in March 2026, Sony describes a Store purchase as a personal license for private, non-commercial use that is not transferable unless local law requires otherwise: “This means you can use a product in the ways described in the license, but do not own the product.” Read the applicable terms rather than treating a digital purchase as an unrestricted, transferable copy. Sony’s March 2026 US Terms of Service also give a boxed game as an example of a physical item.

If you prefer a boxed edition, check that the game edition works with your console’s disc-drive configuration and that the specific listing is for the version you want. Physical and digital editions can differ, so verify the format before buying.

If you want just one game, compare its current separate price with the cost of Extra for the time you would need to play it. Extra may still suit you if the game is in the catalog and you will use other included benefits; buying separately may suit you better if you want to keep returning to that title or it is not in the catalog. Do not assume Extra is cheaper merely because the catalog contains many games—the relevant question is whether it includes the games you will actually play.

Check refund rules before buying or subscribing
For a US digital game purchase, Sony’s stated cancellation policy allows a refund request within 14 days only if downloading or streaming the game has not started. Once it has, the purchase is generally not refundable unless the game is faulty. Sony separately allows a subscription cancellation and refund request within 14 days of the initial transaction, with a pro-rata reduction for service already used. These are US policy terms; regional law and policies may differ. Review the current PlayStation Store cancellation policy for your region before purchasing.
