Choose by the games you want to play and where you want to play them—not by a spec-sheet winner. Nintendo Switch 2 is the clear fit if handheld or tabletop play and Nintendo’s games matter most. For a console that stays by the TV, compare PS5 and Xbox Series X by must-play titles, the digital or disc edition you want, games you already own, and the full cost of playing over time.

Start with how and what you play

Before comparing hardware, write down the games you consider must-plays and the people you expect to play with. Check each specific title’s current platform availability; there is no complete, verified current exclusives catalogue here that supports ranking all three systems by library.

Next, decide whether you want to play away from the TV, use physical games, or keep access to purchases from an existing console generation. Those answers often narrow the choice more reliably than headline resolution or performance claims.

Choose Switch 2 if handheld play is a priority

Switch 2 is the only option in this comparison designed for handheld, tabletop, and TV play. Nintendo describes it as able to “transform to suit your game style” on its Switch 2 features page. That flexibility makes it the strongest fit if you want to take the console with you or play without occupying the main TV.

#1 Best Overall
Nintendo Switch 2 System
  • The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play

Nintendo Australia lists a 7.9-inch 1920 × 1080 LCD, 256 GB of internal storage, HDR10, and variable refresh rate up to 120 Hz. In TV mode, it supports up to 3840 × 2160 at 60 fps, or up to 120 fps at 1920 × 1080 or 2560 × 1440. These are system capabilities, not a guarantee that every game runs at those resolutions or frame rates. See Nintendo Australia’s specifications.

The console also supports compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, but Nintendo cautions that some games may not be supported or fully compatible. Check the specific titles and accessories you care about using Nintendo’s compatibility information and Nintendo Support’s accessory guidance. Some original Switch accessories cannot be used with Joy-Con 2, while others may have limited uses. Nintendo Switch Online membership can continue on Switch 2.

Account for storage needs

If you expect to keep many downloaded games installed, plan around Switch 2’s 256 GB internal storage. Nintendo specifies microSD Express for expandable game storage; ordinary microSD cards are not the supported format for storing Switch 2 games. Whether you need an additional card depends on how many games you keep installed and their sizes.

Compare PS5 and Xbox Series X as home consoles

Both are home-console choices in this comparison. Pick between them by checking your must-play games, existing digital purchases and accounts, whether you want a disc drive, and what each system costs in your market. Do not assume that a game, purchase, or accessory carries over: verify it for the exact title and edition.

Xbox Series X has a UHD Blu-ray disc player and supports backward compatibility with thousands of games across four Xbox generations, according to Microsoft’s Series X information. Compatibility and performance still depend on the individual game. Microsoft also recommends a compatible Xbox Storage Expansion Card to add storage at the console’s custom SSD performance; it is an option for people who need more space, not a requirement for every owner.

For PS5, confirm the exact edition before buying. Digital and disc editions differ in whether they include a disc drive, and the product information reviewed for this comparison does not establish a complete, like-for-like technical specification table across PS5, Switch 2, and Xbox Series X. Check Sony’s current product information for the model sold in your region rather than relying on a broad PS5-versus-Xbox spec claim.

Compare the complete cost, not just the console

A September 2026 comparison by Pandromeda reported the following US prices. These are a dated snapshot, not guaranteed current prices or a worldwide ranking; check local retailers and current product listings for the edition and bundle you intend to buy.

Console and edition US price reported by Pandromeda, September 2026
Nintendo Switch 2 $499.99
PlayStation 5 Digital Edition $599.99
PlayStation 5 disc edition $649.99
Xbox Series X $799.99

Prices, bundles, stock, and regional offers can change, so these figures should not be treated as a durable value order. The price of the console is only one part of the decision: include the games you plan to buy, any storage expansion you actually need, and subscriptions you expect to keep.

Check subscription value against your own play habits

Nintendo Switch Online, PlayStation Plus, and Xbox Game Pass have different tiers, benefits, and catalogues that can vary by region and change over time. Compare the current official terms in your country, then estimate a year’s subscription spending against the games you would otherwise buy. Do not choose a service based on a catalogue title you have not confirmed is currently included.

A quick decision checklist

  • Choose Switch 2 if handheld or tabletop play is essential and its available games include the titles you most want.
  • Choose between PS5 and Xbox Series X if you primarily want a TV-based console; let must-play games and your existing purchases lead the comparison.
  • Choose a disc-capable edition if you specifically want physical games or disc playback, after confirming the SKU sold in your region.
  • Check compatibility title by title before counting on an older game, controller, or accessory working on a new system.
  • Estimate the ongoing total using local hardware and game prices, needed storage, and the current subscription terms—not a single console price.
