Choose a gaming convention ticket by matching its dates and included areas to your plans, then check whether your must-attend games, tournaments, panels, or other activities need separate tickets or reservations. Ticket names such as “VIP,” “weekend,” and “all-access” are not standardized, so compare the actual inclusions and exclusions on the official page for the specific convention year.
Start with the days you plan to attend
Write down the dates you expect to be at the convention before comparing prices or perks. A day pass may be limited to the date printed on it; a multi-day or weekend pass covers the dates specified by that organizer. For example, Game Con Canada lists an All-Access weekend pass alongside Friday, Saturday, and Sunday day passes. IKKiCON says its day passes are valid only on the corresponding purchased days. Check the current event page to confirm exact dates and hours: Game Con Canada FAQ and IKKiCON tickets.
If your schedule is uncertain, compare the flexibility of the available passes with the event’s transfer, resale, and refund rules. A pass that covers more days is useful only if you can attend those days and the added access matters to you.
Check what the pass actually admits you to
Do not assume a general-admission badge includes every hall, meeting, evening event, or part of the program. Read the pass description for each space and activity you care about, including any restricted areas.

Game Developers Conference (GDC), for example, describes distinct pass categories such as Festival Hall Only, Business Hall Only, Indie, Start-up, Academic, and 1-Day Career, as well as a premium Game Changer tier. Their access and eligibility differ; certain restricted passes can be combined. These are GDC-specific examples, not universal ticket categories. See the GDC FAQ for the current distinctions.
Find out whether activities need separate tickets or reservations
A convention badge can cover general admission while a particular game, tournament, class, autograph, or other limited-capacity activity requires its own ticket, registration, or fee. Identify your must-do activities first, then check their entry rules and availability before choosing a pass.

Gen Con explains that an event ticket confirms a spot in a scheduled game or event. Its policy also warns that generic tickets may not guarantee admission or the ability to play if an event sells out. That distinction is useful beyond Gen Con, but the specific ticket rules and deadlines apply to that event year; consult its official policies and show information.
Requirements can vary even within one convention. TantrumCon says some special events, Learn-to-Plays, and classes require preregistration, while open gaming and some other spaces do not. Decide whether premium benefits fit your plans
Compare a premium tier with the standard pass by listing the added benefits and asking which you will actually use. GDC’s Game Changer tier, for example, lists lounge access, meals, reserved seating, and a GDC Vault subscription beyond Festival Pass access. Those benefits may matter to one attendee and not another; the pass name alone does not establish what another convention’s premium tier includes. Check the event’s current inclusions in its official FAQ.

Before checkout, confirm that you meet any eligibility requirements for a discounted or specialized pass. Check age rules and contact the organizer about accessibility arrangements if you need them. Then review the total checkout cost, including any fees, along with availability, transfer rules, refund terms, and relevant deadlines.

These policies vary by event. Gen Con publishes year-specific deadlines and administrative fee terms; TantrumCon says badge refunds are not offered but allows transfers under its policy; IKKiCON says sales are final and tickets are nonrefundable and nontransferable.
