Claude Code is the clearest fit if you prefer a terminal-first tool working with a local project. Codex is worth considering if you want to choose among desktop, CLI, IDE, web, and cloud options. Google Antigravity is designed around agents working within a development environment that spans the editor, terminal, and browser. Those are differences in how you work—not evidence that one tool builds better apps.
How do the three tools fit into an app-development workflow?
The practical question is where you want to work and how you want to supervise an agent. The table summarizes the products as their publishers describe them; it is not a head-to-head performance comparison.
| Tool | Where work happens | How you interact | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Claude Code | A development machine and project directory | Terminal-based interactive sessions, one-shot prompts, and other CLI workflows | Anthropic documents setup and use as a CLI workflow. Setup guide · CLI reference |
| Codex | ChatGPT desktop app, CLI, IDE extension, web, or Codex Cloud | Choose a client surface; access to cloud work depends on plan eligibility | General Codex access and Codex Cloud eligibility are not the same. Plan access details |
| Google Antigravity | An agent-oriented development workspace across editor, terminal, and browser | Work with agents through a workspace and task-oriented workflow, including asynchronous and parallel work across workspaces | Google documents the IDE, a separate desktop application, and an enterprise availability route; they should not be treated as interchangeable editions. Which should you choose for your style of app development?
Choose Claude Code if you want to work from the terminal
Claude Code is the most straightforward match if your normal routine is to open a project locally, use a terminal, and direct work through CLI sessions. Its reference covers interactive use, single prompts, piping content into a prompt, continuing or resuming sessions, updating the client, and configuring MCP servers. That makes comfort with the terminal and your existing local project setup relevant selection criteria; the documentation does not establish that this workflow is faster or produces better code than the alternatives.
Anthropic’s setup documentation lists macOS, Linux, or Windows using WSL or Git for Windows; 4 GB or more of RAM; Node.js 18+; and an internet connection. It also lists authentication through Anthropic Console, eligible Claude Pro or Max plans, and enterprise deployment through services such as Amazon Bedrock or Google Vertex AI. These are the requirements and access routes in the cited documentation, which may change, so check the current setup guide before choosing.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose Codex if you want to pick a client surface
Codex makes sense to examine if you want the option of using a desktop app, CLI, IDE extension, web, or cloud workflow. The important catch is that the available surfaces and cloud eligibility depend on your plan and workspace: OpenAI says Codex access is included across the ChatGPT plans described on its help page, while Codex Cloud is available only to eligible paid or workspace plans—not Free or Go. Usage limits also vary by plan, task, and workspace settings. Confirm the current terms for the exact surface you intend to use rather than assuming that access to Codex includes every cloud capability.
Choose Antigravity if its agent-oriented workspace fits
Google describes Antigravity IDE as an environment where agents can work across the editor, terminal, and browser, including asynchronously and in parallel across workspaces. That may suit a workflow where you want agent activity organized around tasks and artifacts, rather than relying only on a terminal session or selecting among separate client surfaces. It is a product workflow description, not proof of speed, quality, or suitability for every app project.

Keep the product forms distinct. Google’s IDE overview says the IDE is not supported for enterprise customers. Google separately describes Antigravity 2.0 as a desktop application for macOS, Linux, and Windows, and has announced Antigravity availability for eligible Gemini Enterprise subscriptions. Those announcements do not make the IDE, desktop app, and enterprise route interchangeable; verify the particular product form and eligibility that your team needs.
How should you compare access, cost, and organization requirements?
Check the exact access route before planning a project
- Claude Code: confirm your operating system, local setup, and preferred authentication route against Anthropic’s current setup requirements.
- Codex: verify whether your plan and workspace permit the specific client or Codex Cloud use you want. The plan-access page explains that access and limits are not identical across plans.
- Antigravity: check whether you mean the IDE, the separate desktop application, or an eligible enterprise route. Google’s IDE documentation and enterprise announcement describe different conditions.

See OpenAI’s Codex product page for current terms. These figures do not show how much usage you will receive for a particular task or workspace, so compare the included usage and limits as well as the subscription price. Google provides an Antigravity pricing page, but no numeric price or quota is established here; check it directly for your account, region, and plan. The cited materials do not establish a comparable Claude Code price, so verify the applicable Claude plan or deployment terms with Anthropic rather than inferring a figure.
How can you make a fair choice for your own app?
Use the same small, representative task in each tool you are seriously considering. For example, ask each to make one contained change in a non-production branch of your app, then review the result using the standards you would apply to a real change. This is a suggested evaluation method, not a published test of these products.

- Choose a task you can judge. Pick a small feature, bug fix, or test addition from a repository you understand. Avoid using a vague prompt that makes the results hard to compare.
- Set identical constraints. Give each tool the same task, relevant context, access to the same project state, and the same instructions about tests and review. Note any setup or plan restrictions that prevent an equivalent trial.
- Observe the workflow, not just the final diff. Consider whether you can follow the agent’s actions, provide direction at useful points, and work comfortably in its client or workspace.
- Review the change yourself. Check the diff, run the relevant tests, and assess whether the implementation fits your project. Do not treat a confident explanation or a completed task as a substitute for review.
- Include the real operating cost. Confirm the plan, usage limits, cloud eligibility, and any organization requirements for the specific product form you expect to use.
What the available evidence does—and does not—show
Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google describe their own products and access terms; those descriptions help identify workflow differences, but they are not an independent comparative study. The cited materials provide no head-to-head benchmark for app-development speed, accuracy, or quality. Google’s description of Antigravity as a platform for higher-level, task-oriented work is the company’s positioning, not independent evidence that it outperforms Claude Code or Codex. Make the decision based on the workflow and access you can verify for your project, rather than an unsupported ranking.
