Choose based on the specific guitar’s playability, condition, all-in cost, and purchase protections—not just whether it is new or used. A used guitar can be a good buy when its condition is clear and its price leaves room for maintenance; a new one can make more sense when you value a known history and eligible warranty coverage. Try the exact instrument if possible, and compare examples of the same model or close equivalents.

What matters most when comparing new and used guitars?

Neither label guarantees a better-playing instrument. Fender recommends trying guitars for comfort and sound, and notes that setup can change during shipping. A new guitar may therefore need adjustment, while a used guitar may already play well—or may need repairs that change its real cost.

Compare instruments in similar playable condition. Look at the exact model, included accessories, seller terms, and any setup or repair work required. Fender says used and vintage value depends on variables such as condition, rarity, and desirability, rather than a universal discount. Fender’s electric-guitar buying guide and used-instrument value guidance offer useful context.

How to compare the real cost

Compare the likely final cost of a guitar in playable condition, not just the asking price. A used instrument may need a setup, strings, replacement parts, or repair; substantial fret wear or structural damage can outweigh an apparent saving. A new instrument may also need setup after shipping, and any essentials not included in the sale add to its cost.

  • For a used guitar, ask a technician for an estimate if you find a problem you cannot assess confidently.
  • For either option, confirm what the price includes and whether the seller allows a return if the instrument does not match its description.
  • For unusual or potentially vintage instruments, compare condition carefully and seek a specialist’s valuation rather than relying on a generic price rule.

Fender’s buying guide says many first-time electric-guitar buyers spend $250 to $600, but gives no year or method for that figure. It is not a current market average or a new-versus-used comparison, so use live prices for the model you are considering instead.

What to inspect on a used guitar

Inspect the specific instrument in person where possible. If you are new to guitars, bring an experienced player or ask a qualified technician to check anything you are unsure about. Gibson’s used-guitar purchase checklist describes several condition issues worth examining.

Neck, truss rod, and frets

  • Check whether the neck has workable relief and whether the truss rod functions. Gibson describes checking relief by observing string clearance around the middle of the neck while fretting the low E string at the first and final frets.
  • Look for substantial fret wear. A fret job can erase the savings on a bargain.

Joints, hardware, and body

  • Look for cracks around the headstock, neck joint, and body joint. On a set-neck guitar, check for signs of a faulty neck joint.
  • For a bolt-on neck, check for excessive side-to-side play or stripped screw holes. Test that the hardware works and stays stable.
  • On an acoustic flat-top, some belly can be normal; pronounced bellying may indicate a history of excessive string tension.

Finish, modifications, and authenticity

  • Ask whether the finish is original and whether pickups, bridges, or other parts have been changed. Refinishes can be difficult to spot, and modifications can affect value.
  • Be cautious if a listing is priced far below typical examples. For a high-value purchase, verify serial information and provenance with the manufacturer or a qualified specialist. Gibson provides guidance for reporting suspected counterfeit listings.

Play before you decide

Try the guitar seated and standing. For an electric, listen through a suitable amplifier. Compare comfort, sound, tuning stability, and how easily you can play it. If you cannot try it, request clear, detailed photos and ask the seller specific questions about playability, repairs, and return terms.

How warranty and seller terms differ

Do not assume a manufacturer’s original warranty transfers with a used guitar. Fender states that its instrument warranties apply only to the original purchaser. In the United States, Fender says its authorized service centers can still repair used Fender equipment that is no longer under warranty; repair availability and terms for other brands or regions may differ. Confirm coverage with the manufacturer and get the seller’s terms in writing. See Fender’s used-instrument warranty FAQ.

Fender Certified Pre-Owned is one example of an inspected-used option: Fender says CPO instruments receive technician inspection and describes a certificate, a limited one-year warranty for the original purchaser, and a 30-day return policy, subject to terms. Those protections apply to that program, not to used guitars generally. Review the current conditions before buying. Fender’s Certified Pre-Owned information includes its Reverb store details.

Which should you choose?

Choose new if… Choose used if… Check before paying
You prefer a known purchase history and want applicable original-purchaser warranty terms. The particular guitar plays well, its condition and history are clear, and its price accounts for likely maintenance. Written warranty eligibility, return terms, and who the warranty covers.
You can inspect the exact instrument but want to avoid unknown wear or repairs. You can inspect it or obtain convincing, detailed evidence, and trust the seller’s description. Neck, frets, joints, hardware, finish, modifications, and authenticity.
The comparable used example does not provide enough savings after setup or repair costs. The total cost remains attractive after setup, repair estimates, and replacement parts. Final cost for instruments in comparable playable condition.

If you cannot assess a used guitar’s condition or the seller will not provide clear evidence and reasonable terms, the lower listing price is not enough to make it the better choice. If you can verify condition and cost, a used instrument may be worthwhile; if not, the simpler purchase may be new.
