Choose an Xbox Series X|S if you mainly play at home and want dedicated gaming hardware; choose a Windows handheld such as the ROG Xbox Ally if portable, installed play matters; choose Xbox Cloud Gaming if you want to stream supported games to a device you already own. These options overlap: a console can run games locally or stream from the cloud, and a handheld can install games, stream them, or remotely play from your home console.
What each Xbox gaming option gives you
Xbox Series X|S console
A Series X|S is the home-first choice: a dedicated device for local play on your TV or monitor. It can also play supported games from the cloud. Windows handheld
The ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X are ASUS handhelds running Windows 11 Home. They can install or stream games and use Xbox Remote Play. Supported Xbox Play Anywhere titles can carry progress across PC, console, and compatible handhelds; saves, add-ons, and achievements sync through your Xbox account for supported cross-device play.

Xbox Cloud Gaming
Cloud Gaming streams a supported game to another device instead of running it locally. Xbox lists supported browsers on phones, tablets, and PCs, Xbox consoles, selected LG, Samsung, and VIDAA smart TVs, Amazon Fire TV, and selected Meta Quest VR headsets. Device and regional availability can vary. Xbox describes the service as a way to “play hundreds of console games on the devices you already have”; the games, devices, and access conditions are not universal.

Check game access, compatibility, and internet before choosing
Confirm that the exact game is available to you
Game access depends on the title, platform, region, and—in some cases—the Game Pass plan. Cloud catalogs change, and not every game you own or can install is necessarily streamable. Check the current cloud catalog and plan details for your country before subscribing or buying hardware.
For handhelds, Xbox uses the labels “Handheld optimized,” “Mostly compatible,” “Unsupported,” and “Not tested.” A label is a compatibility indication, not a measured frame-rate promise; some games may need settings changes. Check the current Handheld Compatibility list for titles you care about.

Account for streaming conditions
Xbox specifies at least 10 Mbps download speed for cloud gaming; some devices may need 20 Mbps for best quality. It recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi. Those figures are service guidance, not a guarantee of smooth play: connection quality, location, device, and other factors affect results. Remote Play also requires a supported device, internet access, and a Series X|S or Xbox One configured with remote features.
Understand the plan and playtime limits
On the US Xbox plan page accessed 2026-10-07, Essential, Premium, and Ultimate were shown with 5, 10, and 15 hours of monthly cloud playtime, respectively, and libraries of 50+, 200+, and 500+ games. These are changeable, market-specific page details, not stable guarantees. The same page says cloud gaming is not included with PC Game Pass. Selected free-to-play games may be playable with a free Microsoft account in a supported region, and selected cloud-playable games owned or purchased outside Game Pass can be streamed. Check the live plan terms and catalog in your country; no subscription price is stated here because the cited dynamic page did not provide a reliable price.

Set up cloud gaming or Remote Play
Cloud Gaming
- Check support: Confirm your region, device, browser or app, and chosen game on Xbox Cloud Gaming. For browser play at xbox.com, Xbox names Edge, Chrome, and Safari as supported browsers.
- Confirm access: Check whether the game requires an eligible Game Pass plan or is one of the selected free-to-play or separately owned games available to stream.
- Prepare controls: Use a compatible Bluetooth or USB controller. Selected games support touch controls.
- Check the connection: Meet Xbox’s minimum 10 Mbps download guidance; some devices may need 20 Mbps for best quality. Xbox recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi.
Remote Play from an Xbox console
- Enable remote features on a supported Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One.
- Leave the console on or in Sleep mode so the supported device can connect to it.
- Use a supported device and internet connection to access games installed on that console. Remote Play is distinct from cloud gaming: it streams from your own console rather than Xbox’s cloud servers.
Make the decision based on total use, not just portability
- Choose a console when home play is the norm and you want a dedicated local gaming setup.
- Choose a handheld when portable installed play is central and you are comfortable checking game compatibility and adjusting settings where needed.
- Choose cloud gaming when your existing supported device and reliable connection make streaming preferable to buying more hardware, and the plan or game access suits your use.
- Combine options when that fits your routine: an Xbox can be your home system and Remote Play source, while a handheld can switch between installed games, cloud streaming, and remote play.
