What should you compare before choosing?
Use the same criteria for both versions, then give more weight to the ones that matter to you. A collection can preserve a game’s broad identity while changing how it looks, feels, or fits into a modern playthrough.

Does “remastered” mean the original games are unchanged?
No. The label alone does not establish how much changed. Publishers and developers use different descriptions: EA says Mass Effect Legendary Edition built on the original assets and distinguishes that work from a remake; Vicarious Visions called Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy “a remaster plus” while saying its team rebuilt gameplay from scratch; Activision described Spyro Reignited Trilogy as remade from the ground up. Those labels are useful context, but the practical question is what each release actually changed.
Official development accounts explain the creators’ approach and listed features; they are not independent head-to-head assessments of which version is better or perfectly faithful. Treat a stated intention to honor an original as an aim, not proof that every detail is identical.

What changed in these trilogy collections?
Mass Effect Legendary Edition
EA says the collection includes the single-player base games Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, and Mass Effect 3, plus over 40 DLC, and is remastered and optimized for 4K Ultra HD. EA also describes choices carrying across the trilogy. Its visual-development account says the team built on original assets while updating elements including shadows, post-processing, character assets, environments, and the user interface, with the stated aim of retaining the trilogy’s atmosphere. EA’s product page and visual-development account describe those inclusions and changes.
Gameplay changed too: BioWare’s overview documents adjustments to aiming, weapons, abilities, cover, experience points, the Mako, and the Galaxy at War/Readiness system. These are changes to how the games play, not only to image quality. See BioWare’s gameplay and content overview.

BioWare summarized its approach this way: “A remaster rather than remake allowed us to build upon the original assets in a way that resembles the polishing phase in a normal development cycle, while also being able to utilize the advantages of much more modern hardware and software.” This makes the collection a useful example of a remaster that retains the trilogy’s story structure while adjusting both presentation and play.
Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy
Vicarious Visions said the original source code and assets were nearly unusable. The team used original level geometry as a guide, rebuilt gameplay from scratch, and added art, animation, and audio. It also listed unified checkpointing and save systems, menus, and time trials across all three games. A later developer account describes rebuilt levels and updated presentation, online leaderboards, and Coco as playable across the trilogy. The details are in the studio’s development account.

Vicarious Visions described its method as: “Using the original level geometry from Naughty Dog as a guide, we rebuilt the Crash gameplay from scratch, capturing its simplicity and precision.” That combination shows why familiar level design does not necessarily mean the original code or every mechanic is untouched.
Spyro Reignited Trilogy
Activision’s 2018 announcement says the collection brings together Spyro the Dragon, Spyro 2: Ripto’s Rage!, and Spyro: Year of the Dragon. It describes the games as remade from the ground up, with improved environments, updated controls, new lighting, recreated cinematics, analog-stick support, and smoother camera handling. Toys for Bob’s Paul Yan said the team aimed to stay true to the originals’ legacy while refreshing the collection. Read Activision’s announcement for the listed features and statement of intent.

Which version should you choose?
Choose the original release if
- You want to experience period-authentic visuals, audio, staging, or original behavior.
- You care about comparing the historical release directly rather than a later interpretation.
- You prefer the original balance or mechanics, and the collection changed them in ways you would rather avoid.
Choose the remastered trilogy if
- You want specific presentation or control updates documented for that collection.
- Its included DLC or added features matter to your playthrough.
- You value a consolidated route through the games and its particular convenience features.
If you are new to a series, neither route is automatically superior. Match your priorities to the changes in that franchise, then confirm the exact platform, edition contents, region, and current availability. The examples above describe specific collections; they do not establish live stock, prices, or compatibility across every platform.
