Choose by comparing the exact MacBook configuration, total price, seller terms, battery condition, and whether the Mac can be erased and activated—not by condition label alone. A new MacBook is the simplest route; Apple Certified Refurbished offers Apple-described functional testing and a one-year limited warranty; a used MacBook can be a good candidate only if the individual device and seller pass your checks.
Which MacBook condition should you choose?
Start with the same model and configuration wherever possible. “MacBook Air” or “MacBook Pro” alone is not enough to compare value: specifications affect price and usefulness, while age and prior use affect what you need to verify. Compare each option’s final price and seller terms, then factor in any likely repair or battery service.

Apple’s Certified Refurbished policy describes its process and warranty. Its separate promise of a new battery and outer shell applies to refurbished iOS devices—not MacBooks—so do not assume a refurbished MacBook has either.
What does Apple Certified Refurbished include?
Apple states that every Apple Certified Refurbished product completes a refurbishment process that includes full functional testing, with genuine Apple replacement parts as needed, and includes the standard one-year limited warranty. Apple’s store currently advertises savings of up to 15%; that does not mean every MacBook configuration is available or discounted by that amount. Check the live listing for the exact model, price, and applicable terms.

Apple’s general refurbishment language should not be confused with the new-battery and outer-shell promise it makes specifically for refurbished iOS devices. Apple does not make that same promise for MacBooks on the cited policy page.
How do you evaluate a used MacBook before paying?
Use these checks for the individual machine. A seller’s description or a low asking price cannot substitute for checking the Mac itself.

- Confirm the exact model and configuration. Compare the specifications with the new or refurbished MacBook you are considering, rather than comparing broad labels such as “Pro” or “Air.”
- Check battery condition and cycle count. On the Mac, Option-click the Apple menu, choose System Information, then select Hardware > Power. Apple’s cycle-count limit varies by model; compare the displayed count with the limit for that exact model in Apple’s Mac laptop battery cycle count table. Apple recommends battery replacement when the model’s maximum cycle count is reached. A low cycle count by itself does not establish the battery’s overall condition.
- Look up coverage for the serial number. Enter the device’s serial number in Apple’s coverage checker and compare the result with what the seller says. The result is specific to that device; do not infer a warranty from its age or a seller’s general claim.
- Have the seller remove Activation Lock and erase the Mac. Ask the seller to turn off Find My and remove the lock, then erase the Mac. Apple says Activation Lock requires the owner’s Apple Account password or device passcode before someone can turn off Find My, erase the Mac, or reactivate it. For supported Apple silicon or T2 Macs running macOS Monterey 12 or later, Erase Assistant signs out, turns off Find My and Activation Lock, erases the contents, and returns the Mac to setup. - Confirm you can activate it before completing the sale. After erasure, proceed through setup far enough to confirm the Mac can be activated and is not asking for the previous owner’s credentials. If the seller cannot or will not complete the removal and allow this check, do not treat the transaction as finished.
- Inspect the machine and test relevant functions. Check physical condition and the functions you need in person where possible. The fact that a Mac is offered for sale does not establish that it has been inspected or tested.
- Compare total cost. Include any likely battery service or repair when comparing the used price with a current new or refurbished listing for an equivalent configuration. There is no reliable universal break-even price: the answer depends on the device, condition, seller terms, and live alternatives.
When is paying more for new or refurbished worthwhile?
Choose new for the simplest purchase
New is the straightforward option if you want a new-device condition and do not want to assess prior use or transfer ownership. Still compare the precise configuration, final price, return terms, and warranty: those vary by seller, country, and date.
Choose Apple Certified Refurbished for Apple’s stated process and warranty
This option can suit buyers who want a refurbished MacBook sold under Apple’s published functional-testing process and standard one-year limited warranty. Check whether the configuration you want is in stock and whether its live price is attractive; the advertised “up to 15%” saving is not a promise for any particular model.

Choose used only when the individual Mac checks out
A used listing may be worth considering when its exact configuration and total cost compare favorably with current alternatives, and you can verify its condition, battery, coverage, and ability to activate. If you cannot inspect the machine or establish clear seller terms, the apparent savings may not justify the uncertainty.
