Start with the tablet-and-pen combination
A pen that works with one tablet may not work with another model in the same family. Before buying, check the tablet’s exact model and generation against the stylus model—not just the brand name.
Which pen works with an iPad?
Apple publishes separate compatibility lists for Apple Pencil Pro, Apple Pencil (USB-C), Apple Pencil (2nd generation), and Apple Pencil (1st generation). Features differ between Pencil models, and compatibility is specific to the iPad. Check Apple’s Apple Pencil compatibility list for your exact iPad before choosing a Pencil.
Which pen works with a Galaxy Tab?
Samsung describes S Pen compatibility and features by tablet model. Basic writing does not require charging or pairing in the context covered by Samsung’s support guidance, but Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) functions and charging vary by pen and tablet. Samsung also notes that some FE models do not support BLE features. Check the S Pen compatibility and feature guidance for the specific combination you plan to buy; do not assume that writing support means Air Actions or other BLE functions will work.

Compare the drawing workflow you actually use
Make a shortlist of the drawing apps and features you need, then confirm their availability and functionality on the tablet’s operating system. Compare the brush and canvas tools you use, how projects move to your computer or other devices, and whether the app supports the file formats and workflow you need. A manufacturer’s list of featured apps is not a complete comparison of what is available on either platform.
Samsung’s October 2, 2026 US announcement names creativity apps in connection with the Galaxy Tab S12 series. Apple’s Pencil page names Goodnotes 6 and Procreate. These examples do not establish that the apps have identical features, terms, or availability across platforms. Check each app’s current platform support and requirements before buying a tablet around it.

Choose based on your note-taking needs
Handwriting and text conversion
Samsung says Samsung Notes supports S Pen handwriting and lets users alter or move handwritten content and convert it to text. If those functions matter, verify that the Galaxy Tab model and software version you are considering support the workflow you want.
Notes and document markup
Apple describes Apple Pencil use for note-taking and marking up documents. Compare the note app you plan to use, including how it organizes pages, handles handwriting, exports or syncs files, and supports PDF annotation. The cited manufacturer descriptions do not establish that Samsung Notes and Apple’s note-taking options behave identically.

Match screen size and pen features to your work
A larger screen may suit detailed illustration or working with documents at a desk, while a smaller tablet may be easier to carry. Samsung’s October 2, 2026 US announcement specifies a 14.6-inch display for the Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra. Apple’s Apple Pencil information covers iPad Pro, iPad Air, and iPad mini families; compare the size of the exact iPad model you are considering rather than treating the family names as one screen size.
Also decide which pen features you will use. Apple lists features such as squeeze, barrel roll, haptic feedback, hover, double-tap, and magnetic attachment, pairing, and charging for Apple Pencil Pro on compatible iPads. Apple Pencil (USB-C) has a different feature set. Samsung’s S Pen functions also vary by supported model and generation, especially for BLE features. Check the compatibility details before paying for features you may not be able to use.

Compare the complete cost, not just the tablet
Build a total for the configuration you will actually use: tablet, compatible stylus if it is not included, required apps or subscriptions, storage tier, and accessories. No matched current price comparison across Galaxy Tab and iPad models, regions, and app plans is established here, so an across-the-board value winner cannot be stated.
Samsung’s October 2, 2026 US announcement says the Galaxy Tab S12+ and S12 Ultra include an S Pen, and lists trial or subscription offers for several apps. Treat the inclusion and offers as specific to that US announcement, not as a rule for every Galaxy Tab, market, or purchase date. Check the offer terms and your local configuration at checkout.

Factor in your existing devices and services
If your phone, computer, cloud storage, and creative or note apps already form a reliable workflow, consider how each tablet would fit into it. Check whether you can move and sync the files you care about, whether your preferred apps are available with the features you need, and whether accessories you own are compatible. Ecosystem fit depends on your own setup; it does not make one platform the right choice for everyone.
A practical decision checklist
- Write down the drawing and note-taking apps you need, and confirm their support for the tablet’s operating system.
- Identify the exact tablet model and generation, then verify the compatible stylus and the features it supports.
- Compare screen size and portability against where and how you work.
- Check the note, markup, export, and sync workflows you expect to use.
- Add up the complete setup cost for your region, including apps and accessories.
- Choose the option that fits your existing devices and workflow without paying for pen features you will not use.
