For most Steam Deck games, leave Proton selection to Steam. To test another version for one game, open its Library entry, press Menu, select Properties > Compatibility, enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool, and choose a version. Start with the default or Stable option; try Experimental or a relevant Hotfix only when troubleshooting points that way.
Which Proton version should you choose?
Start with Steam’s default selection unless a game has a specific problem you are trying to solve. Valve’s Proton documentation says, “Most users should use Proton provided by the Steam Client itself.” Steam’s default Stable flavor is released after extensive quality assurance and public release-candidate testing.
For a comparison, change the setting for one game at a time, launch it, and assess whether it reaches gameplay, remains stable, and behaves well in performance and graphics. A different Proton build is not a guaranteed fix: results depend on the game and its current updates.
Stable or a numbered Proton release
Use Stable for predictable everyday play. Valve describes this flavor as going through extensive QA and public release-candidate testing before release.

Proton Experimental
Experimental is a public-testing channel for experimental features, not a universally better version. It can be worth comparing when a game-specific issue might be addressed by a newer fix or feature. Valve says games listed as working only with Experimental in its changelog are tested for regressions before release.
Proton Hotfix
Hotfix is intended for targeted fixes to specific new or important games when a normal Proton release cannot arrive quickly enough. Valve describes it as temporary: the fix is expected to be phased out as it matures. Choose it when the hotfix is relevant to your game, rather than as a general upgrade.

Proton Bleeding Edge
Avoid Bleeding Edge as a casual troubleshooting choice. Valve characterizes it as automated and untested, and warns that it can damage a game’s prefix or saves.
Custom Proton builds
Custom or locally installed Proton builds are an advanced option. Valve’s repository says Steam supports local builds in the user’s compatibility tools directory; Steam must be restarted to detect a newly installed tool. Most players should first compare the versions Steam itself offers.

How to change Proton for one Steam Deck game
- Open the target game’s entry in the Steam Deck Library.
- Press Menu and choose Properties.
- Open Compatibility.
- Enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
- Select the Proton version you want to try. Begin with the default or Stable choice; use Experimental or a relevant Hotfix when troubleshooting warrants a comparison.
- Return to the game and launch it. If the result is worse, go back to Properties > Compatibility and select the previous choice or restore Steam’s default behavior.
This is a per-game setting, so it lets you test a title without changing Proton selection for your entire library. Steam’s labels and available builds may change as the client, SteamOS, games, and Proton are updated.

Check the game’s Steam Deck Verified status and try adjusting its graphics settings as part of troubleshooting. A Proton change alone cannot establish that the game will work well.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
Also be aware that forcing Proton can change which game version Steam installs: Steam Support notes that if only the Linux version is installed, forcing Proton may cause Steam to download the Windows version. Allow for that download before judging the result.
