Choose an SSD by adding up what you expect to keep on it at the same time: your operating system and apps, installed games, and locally stored files. Then leave room for updates and future additions. There is no single capacity that suits every workload; Microsoft’s consumer guidance offers broad reference ranges, while your own inventory gives you a more useful answer.
How to estimate the capacity you need
- List your operating system and applications. Include the software you use regularly, not just the largest programs. If the SSD will also hold Windows, account for it as part of the drive’s total workload.
- Add the games you want installed together. Look up each game’s current storage requirement in its store listing or official support page. Requirements differ by title and can change, so a generic “average game size” is not a reliable planning number.
- Count files that stay on the computer. Include photos, video, downloads, documents, and other local data. Files kept in OneDrive or another cloud service may use less device storage, depending on which files you keep available locally.
- Leave additional room for updates and new items. Windows updates need free space, and the amount varies by update path and installed options. Plan for the way you use the computer rather than treating any one reserve figure as a universal rule.
Compare that combined estimate with the capacities you can buy and use. If you regularly uninstall games to make room, or your local media collection is growing, choose more capacity than your current minimum estimate.
What published capacity ranges can—and cannot—tell you
Microsoft’s consumer buying guide suggests 256 GB to 1 TB or more for people storing many large photos, movies, or games on a PC, and 512 GB to 2 TB or more when games share storage with other files. These are broad vendor recommendations, not guarantees that a given capacity will suit your personal collection.
Windows 11 lists “64 GB or greater available disk space” as its minimum storage requirement. That figure is an eligibility floor for installation or upgrade, not a sensible total-drive target for a computer that will also hold applications, games, and personal files. Microsoft notes that requirements can grow over time.

Update needs are variable too. Microsoft’s examples for Windows 11 updates range from 5.5 GB or more to 20 GB or more under different scenarios. Treat those as examples of update-related free-space needs, not as one official fixed buffer that applies to every PC.
Use actual game requirements, not a made-up average
As one title-specific example, Steam’s Hogwarts Legacy support listing specifies 85 GB of available space and says an SSD is preferred, while an HDD is supported. That is a requirement for that game, not evidence that 85 GB is typical of games generally. Check the current listing for every game you plan to keep installed, and account for additional content if the publisher or store specifies it.

Choose storage for the way you keep files
Mostly apps, a few games, and modest local files
A smaller drive may work if your installed library is limited and you regularly move or remove files. Be realistic about how often you want to manage space; the smallest drive that fits today may feel restrictive if you prefer to keep several large games installed.
Games alongside photos, videos, or downloads
When games share the drive with substantial local media, plan from the total concurrent collection rather than game sizes alone. Microsoft’s 512 GB to 2 TB-plus guidance for games alongside other files gives a broad reference, but your inventory should decide where in that range you land.

Many large local files
Video, large photo collections, and other bulky files can quickly change the calculation. Microsoft’s 256 GB to 1 TB-plus range for large photos, movies, or games is orientation, not a cap; keep more capacity in mind if your local library exceeds that scale.
Capacity is not the same as compatibility
A capacity label does not tell you whether an internal SSD will fit or work in your computer. Check the computer or motherboard documentation for the supported drive type, physical size, interface, available slot, and generation before buying. Crucial’s compatibility guidance recommends checking system support. A newer-generation SSD may work in an older compatible system without delivering the newer generation’s performance.

For an upgrade, consult the manufacturer’s installation instructions and prepare for the migration appropriately, including backing up important files. A 1 TB NVMe M.2 SSD is one product category, not a universal recommendation; verify a particular drive against your system before purchase.

An external SSD can add removable capacity if your computer cannot be expanded internally or you want storage you can move between compatible devices. Microsoft also describes external storage as a way to temporarily extend available space for Windows updates. Do not assume every computer, console, or game can run from an external SSD: check support for the specific platform and title.

A practical final check before buying
- Will the drive hold Windows and applications as well as games, or is it a secondary game/data drive?
- How many games do you want installed concurrently, and what are their current listed storage requirements?
- How much media and other data stays local rather than in cloud storage?
- Have you left room for update-related free space and future additions?
- Does your computer support the SSD’s form factor and interface, and do you have an available slot?
- Is the price difference between usable capacities worthwhile for your needs? The cited guidance does not establish a universal price-per-gigabyte breakpoint.
