Choose a production JDK by matching a specific vendor’s support commitment, license, platform coverage, and update process to the versions your application stack can run. “LTS” alone does not guarantee a fixed support period or identical terms across vendors. As of October 7, 2026, Java 25 is the newest LTS on Oracle’s roadmap, but the right choice for your application depends on your own compatibility checks and vendor requirements.
What “LTS” means—and what it does not
LTS is a vendor’s designation for a long-term-support release; it is not a universal promise of how long every JDK distribution will receive fixes. Support dates, update frequency, commercial support eligibility, license terms, and supported platforms can differ between vendors and versions. Compare the roadmap and terms for the exact distribution you plan to deploy, rather than choosing by Java version number alone.
Oracle’s April 2, 2026 roadmap names Java SE 8, 11, 17, 21, and 25 as LTS releases and says Oracle intends to issue future LTS releases every two years. It lists Java 29 for September 2027 as planned. These are Oracle’s designations and plans, not a guarantee that every vendor uses the same schedule. Oracle Java SE support roadmap

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Support horizon: Confirm the support end date, whether it is a target or commitment, and what conditions apply to fixes or escalation.
- Update cadence: Check how often security and maintenance updates arrive and whether you must install the latest update to remain eligible for support.
- Support eligibility: Identify who can open support cases, for which deployments, and under what contract or cloud plan.
- License: Read the terms for the exact JDK build and update. Do not assume that “Java” or “OpenJDK” describes a single license.
- Platform coverage: Match the vendor’s supported operating systems, CPU architectures, container base images, and libc variants to your deployment.
- Stack compatibility: Verify frameworks, libraries, build plugins, application servers, agents, native components, and security or observability tooling.
- Operational fit: Consider your team’s patching, reproducible-build, rollout, rollback, and monitoring processes.
- Measured workload behavior: Compare performance and memory use on representative workloads; the sources do not establish a universal fastest JDK.
Oracle and Microsoft support timelines are not interchangeable
The following dates describe the named vendors’ published plans, not a universal support schedule for each Java release. Oracle’s roadmap gives customer support milestones and says the dates are examples; Microsoft describes its end-of-support dates as initial targets that it may extend.
| JDK | Oracle customer support milestones | Microsoft Build of OpenJDK earliest end-of-support target |
|---|---|---|
| 17 | Premier Support through September 2026; Extended Support through September 2029 | September 2027 |
| 21 | Premier Support through September 2028; Extended Support through September 2031 | September 2028 |
| 25 | Premier Support through September 2030; Extended Support through September 2033 | September 2030 |

Microsoft support depends on deployment and update status
Microsoft says its LTS builds receive quarterly updates. To receive commercial support, a system must remain on the latest update. Commercial support is limited to qualifying Azure customers with active support plans for specified Azure services; deployments outside that eligibility can use Microsoft’s community issue and discussion channels. Check the published platform matrix for your exact version: Microsoft lists different Alpine/musl support by major release. Microsoft Build of OpenJDK support roadmap
Check the exact license before standardizing
Oracle’s terms vary by JDK version and update period, and they apply to Oracle’s own distribution—not automatically to another vendor’s build. Oracle states that JDK 21 and later are under its No-Fee Terms and Conditions (NFTC), subject to those conditions, and that NFTC permits commercial and production use. Oracle’s roadmap says JDK 21 updates beginning with the October 2026 Critical Patch Update are planned to move to the Oracle Technology Network (OTN) license. Because this transition is tied to a specific update period, verify the terms for the actual update you adopt.

Oracle also says JDK 25 updates after September 2028 are planned to move to OTN. For JDK 8, 11, and 17, Oracle says updates are offered under OTN; that license is free only for specified users and uses, including personal and development use, while other use may require an applicable entitlement. Review the current license and any rights or restrictions from your software vendor or cloud provider before deploying or redistributing a build. Oracle JDK FAQ · Oracle Java SE support roadmap
Choose a major version your whole stack can support
Start by checking the versions supported by your application framework, libraries, build plugins, application server, agents, native dependencies, and operational tools. A runtime upgrade can expose incompatibilities outside application source code: compilation may require a newer build tool, instrumentation may depend on an updated agent, or a container image may use an unsupported OS or libc variant.

Oracle’s JDK 25 Migration Guide recommends checking third-party libraries and tools, including Maven, Gradle, and IDE support, and recommends javac --release in relevant compiler workflows. It is dated September 11, 2025. Oracle cautions that an application that appears to run successfully may still need the remaining migration-guide checks and a review of listed issues. - HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Confirm the candidate build: Record the vendor, major version, update level, license, and supported production platforms. Ensure the selected build is eligible for the support you need.
- Update and verify the toolchain: Check compiler, Maven or Gradle, IDE, application server, libraries, agents, and native components for target-JDK support. Use
javac --releasewhere appropriate to control the Java API level used for compilation. - Compile and run automated tests: Test on the candidate vendor build, not just on a developer’s local runtime. Investigate warnings, changed behavior, and dependency failures rather than treating a successful startup as proof of compatibility.
- Exercise production paths: Where relevant, test startup and shutdown, normal and peak load, TLS and cryptography, locale and date formatting, reflection or instrumentation, agents, native libraries, and production packaging.
- Compare representative resource use: Measure performance and memory on workloads that resemble your own production traffic. Do not assume that results for another application or environment predict yours.
- Rehearse deployment and rollback: Validate the rollout method, monitoring signals, and a return path to the previous runtime before making the new JDK the production baseline.
Make the decision and keep it maintainable
Choose the candidate that meets your support and licensing requirements, runs on your target platforms, and passes compatibility and workload validation. If multiple candidates qualify, prefer the one your team can patch and support consistently over a nominally newer release that your stack or processes are not ready to maintain. Record the vendor, version, update channel, support entitlement, license review, and planned review date so future patch and migration decisions have a clear owner.
