How much iPhone storage do I need?
There isn’t one capacity that suits everyone. The right choice depends on what occupies your current iPhone, how quickly that use is likely to grow, what you want available without an internet connection, and the storage tiers offered for the specific model in your region.

Start with your current phone rather than a generic “GB per person” rule. The storage screen is a snapshot, not a forecast: consider which items will remain, which are temporary, and what you expect to add before replacing the phone.
Check your current storage
- Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
- Review the amount used and available, the apps taking the most space, and any recommendations shown on the screen.
- For large categories, decide whether the contents are persistent—such as a photo library, game data, or work files—or are downloads and caches you are willing to clear.
Use the storage breakdown as your baseline. Then allow for the files and app data you expect to accumulate during your next ownership period; Apple does not publish a formula for forecasting an individual user’s needs.

Estimate what will grow
- Photos and videos: A growing camera library can take substantial space, particularly when originals remain on the phone.
- Apps and games: Consider the apps you actually use and whether large games or their data stay installed.
- Offline content: Music, films, shows, maps, and other downloads use device storage when kept available offline.
- Messages and files: Attachments, documents, and saved work files can add to usage over time.
There is no reliable universal count of how many photos or videos fit in a given capacity: file sizes vary with content and recording settings. Use your own storage history and habits rather than treating a capacity as a fixed media allowance.
Is 128 GB enough for an iPhone?
It may be enough if your current use leaves comfortable headroom, you keep relatively few large games or offline downloads, and your expected use is similar. It may be a poor fit if your phone is already close to full, your library or app collection is growing, or you want lots of media and files available offline.

Check whether 128 GB is offered on the exact iPhone model you’re considering; capacity choices differ by model and region. If it is available, compare it with the next tier using your current used space and a realistic estimate of future growth. The number alone cannot tell you how long the space will last.
Device storage and iCloud storage are different
Device storage is the fixed capacity built into the iPhone. iCloud storage is cloud space for items such as backups, photos, and files that can sync across devices. When iCloud Photos can reduce local photo storage
By default, photos and videos are stored on the device in their original, high-resolution form. With iCloud Photos and Optimize iPhone Storage enabled, full-resolution originals are stored in iCloud and space-saving copies are kept on the iPhone when needed, provided you have sufficient iCloud space. This can help manage local photo storage, but it is a storage strategy rather than extra device capacity. Cloud-synced originals depend on access to iCloud, while items you need offline still require room on the phone.

Account for iCloud’s separate limit
Apple provides 5 GB of free iCloud storage, according to its support documentation accessed in 2026. That limit applies to cloud storage, not the iPhone’s capacity. If iCloud is full, backups, new photo and video uploads, and syncing may stop until you manage the space or upgrade the cloud plan. Apple explains the options in its iCloud storage management guide.

First confirm which capacities are available for the model and region you plan to buy. Apple’s iPhone comparison page lists model information, but the lineup and tiers can change. Check the local listing at the time of purchase, and compare capacities within the same model rather than assuming every iPhone offers the same choices.

For each available tier, weigh these factors:
- Starting headroom: Compare the tier with your current used space, not just the total capacity.
- Expected growth: Include new photos and videos, app data, messages, files, and downloads for the period you expect to keep the phone.
- Offline needs: Decide how much content must stay on the device when you lack a reliable connection.
- Cloud reliance: Consider whether you are comfortable managing iCloud space and depending on syncing for some content.
- Price difference: Use current local prices for the exact model and capacities. Prices vary, so a universal cost recommendation would be misleading.
When external storage makes sense for ProRes
Some creator workflows have a specific alternative to recording every ProRes video onto the phone: Apple documents direct recording to external storage on certain recent iPhone Pro models. This is a model- and workflow-specific option, not a substitute for built-in storage for everyday apps, photos, and files.
Before relying on it, check Apple’s ProRes support documentation for the exact supported model and drive requirements. A compatible external SSD for iPhone ProRes recording may suit this workflow, but compatibility and recording limits should be verified for the device you choose.
