Choose an identity threat detection and response (ITDR) solution by starting with your identity estate, priority attack scenarios, and ability to act on alerts—not a vendor feature list. Map your existing controls, define measurable acceptance criteria, and test shortlisted products against representative telemetry in a controlled proof of concept. The right choice is the one that closes important gaps and fits your team’s response, privacy, and operating requirements.

Start with risk, not a product category

ITDR is an enterprise software and operating-model decision. Products in the category do not all cover the same identity systems or offer the same detection, investigation, and response capabilities. Before comparing vendors, define which services and identities matter most, what could harm them, and who will respond when an alert fires.

NIST’s Digital Identity Risk Management (DIRM) guidance and Digital Identity Guidelines, SP 800-63-4, recommend a risk-based approach: define the service and affected groups, assess potential impacts, choose and tailor controls, document decisions, and continuously evaluate results and unintended effects. The guidelines address identity systems and controls; they are not an ITDR product certification.

For each critical service, record the users and other parties affected, the business impact of identity compromise or access interruption, and the identity dependencies that support it. Include different user groups and potential effects on privacy and access. This turns “we need ITDR” into a set of specific risks and outcomes.

Map the identity estate and existing controls

Build an inventory before asking vendors for coverage claims. Include the systems and identities that exist in your environment, not just the primary identity provider.

  • On-premises directories such as Active Directory and cloud identity providers such as Microsoft Entra ID, plus any other IdPs.
  • Cloud IAM, SaaS applications, privileged accounts and access paths, and external identity dependencies.
  • Human identities and, where present, non-human identities such as service accounts and service principals.
  • Existing capabilities in your IdP, SIEM, XDR, endpoint tools, PAM, and managed detection services.

For every source, note what telemetry is already collected, which team owns it, and whether existing tools detect or respond to the scenarios you care about. This reveals both gaps and potential duplication. Ask candidates to distinguish a native integration from detection based only on logs you forward; confirm the required permissions, configuration, data, and any coverage or latency limitations.

Prioritize scenarios and define acceptance criteria

Choose realistic attack behaviors based on your architecture and likely harms. Examples to consider include help-desk social engineering, theft and replay of a session token, directory compromise, cloud privilege escalation, and misuse of service accounts or service principals. The relevant set depends on your environment; a broad claim about “AI” or anomaly detection is not evidence that a product detects your priority behavior.

Translate each scenario into observable pass/fail criteria before a demonstration or proof of concept. Specify the telemetry needed, what evidence should trigger an alert, how quickly it should appear, what context an analyst needs, and which response actions are acceptable. For example, ask a vendor to show how it would detect a stolen session cookie replayed from a new device in your representative environment, and to identify the signals behind its conclusion.

Compare shortlisted solutions against the same criteria

Use the same scenarios, data, and questions for each finalist. A requirements matrix makes differences visible without turning vendor claims into a ranking.

What to assess Questions to ask and test Evidence to record
Identity-source coverage Which directories, IdPs, cloud IAM systems, SaaS platforms, privileged accounts, and human or non-human identities are supported? Is each source connected natively or through forwarded logs? Supported sources, prerequisites, gaps, data freshness, and any source-specific limitations.
Threat scenarios and detection quality Can the product detect the named behaviors in your environment? What signals support the finding? How are detections tuned, and what false-positive burden does the test produce? Scenario-by-scenario results, alert evidence, tuning required, false positives, and analyst effort.
Investigation and identity context Can analysts see relevant account relationships, privilege, attack paths, account discovery, and a cross-platform incident timeline? Context available for each alert and whether analysts can trace the identity event across systems.
Response Which actions can the product take directly? Which depend on another tool or service? How do approval, timing, reversibility, and audit logging work? Available actions, dependencies, observed behavior in safe tests, and who owns approval and execution.
Integration and overlap How does the product work with your SIEM, XDR, IdP, PAM, case-management, and response tools? What functions already exist elsewhere? Integration prerequisites, duplicated capabilities, data export and API constraints, and uncovered gaps.
Deployment and operations What agents, permissions, data flows, staffing, tuning, and change management are needed? Who monitors alerts and maintains the integration? Implementation work, operational ownership, ongoing effort, and dependencies to validate.
Privacy and user impact What data is processed and retained? How are access interruption, false positives, accessibility, redress, and proportionality handled? Data handling and retention terms, safeguards, possible user consequences, and documented trade-offs.
Commercial and lifecycle fit How is licensing measured? Are bundles, implementation, support, or other components required? What are the exit and data-portability terms? Current written commercial terms, lifecycle costs, support commitments, and portability provisions.

KuppingerCole’s 2024 ITDR taxonomy offers useful requirement labels: account discovery, user visibility, risk assessment, event detection, incident investigation, remediation, identity posture, and identity deception. Treat those as ways to organize requirements, not as proof of a product’s quality. The report described the category as lacking a well-defined feature set at that time and noted that its use-case views were not comprehensive product evaluations.

Run a controlled proof of concept

A vendor demonstration can illustrate a workflow, but it cannot establish how the product will behave with your sources, permissions, policies, and analysts. Test finalists using representative identity telemetry and safe simulations of the scenarios you prioritized. Coordinate simulations with your security and identity teams so they do not disrupt production access or trigger unplanned response actions.

  1. Agree on the test plan. Document scenarios, data sources, success criteria, test boundaries, and the people authorized to observe or approve response actions.
  2. Verify collection and coverage. Connect the agreed sources and record what data arrives, what is missing, and any setup or permission dependencies.
  3. Exercise the scenarios safely. Use controlled simulations or representative historical telemetry. Do not treat a scripted vendor demo as a substitute for testing your environment.
  4. Assess detection and investigation. Record whether an alert appears, its timing, the evidence and identity context shown, tuning needed, false positives, and analyst effort.
  5. Test response behavior under control. Confirm which actions are direct versus dependent on integrations, who must approve them, how they are logged, and how they can be reversed or recovered.
  6. Review operational and user effects. Evaluate deployment work, data handling, privacy, access interruption, and the responsibilities required to run the service.
  7. Document the decision. Record results against the acceptance criteria, remaining risks, chosen response ownership, and the rationale for selecting—or rejecting—a candidate.

Choose a response model your organization can operate

Detection is not the same as containment. An alert can identify a suspicious identity event, while action may require an analyst, an approval workflow, an IdP or endpoint integration, or a separate response service. Establish who investigates, who can disable an account or revoke sessions, how urgent actions are authorized, and how legitimate users regain access after a false positive or mistaken containment.

Evaluate automated actions with particular care. Confirm their scope, triggering conditions, safeguards, audit trail, reversibility, and interaction with incident procedures. If a vendor offers analyst support or a managed service, establish what that support actually covers and how it fits your existing SOC ownership; do not assume that a product’s response feature includes human investigation.

Validate vendor examples rather than treating them as endorsements

Vendor documentation can help form a shortlist, but stated capabilities must be verified for your tenant, licenses, configuration, and environment.

  • Microsoft Defender identity security: Microsoft describes coverage spanning on-premises AD, Entra ID, SaaS, and supported third-party identity providers, including human and non-human identities. Its documentation describes actions such as disabling compromised accounts, revoking sessions, isolating devices, and resetting credentials. Confirm the exact licensed features, connectors, configuration, and supported scenarios that apply to your deployment.
  • BeyondTrust Identity Security Insights: BeyondTrust describes aggregating identity data, providing identity risk context, and integrating with response workflows. Verify the sources actually supported in your environment, response dependencies, and which functions require other BeyondTrust components.
  • CrowdStrike Falcon Identity Protection / Next-Gen Identity Security: CrowdStrike positions these offerings around identity threat protection and ITDR. Validate the claimed coverage and workflows in your own proof of concept, especially in a mixed-vendor identity environment.

A 2024 KuppingerCole report included BeyondTrust, CrowdStrike, Microsoft, SentinelOne, and Securonix among vendors it labeled “Market Leaders” in that report’s context. That is dated analyst research, not a current procurement ranking or evidence that any vendor fits a particular organization.

Document the decision and keep evaluating it

Record the selected controls, residual risks, data and access trade-offs, and the teams responsible for investigation and response. Define how you will review detection quality, operational burden, business impact, fraud effects, user-community impacts, privacy, and access over time. NIST DIRM guidance calls for continuous evaluation and improvement; an initial procurement decision is not a substitute for checking whether the deployed controls continue to work as intended.
