Choose an external SSD by matching its capacity to the data you’ll keep, its connection to the ports your devices actually have, and its compatibility and durability to how you’ll use it. For backups, games, and large files, also keep another copy of important data: a portable SSD is useful storage, not a complete backup plan.

Start with what the drive needs to do

Before comparing models, estimate how much storage you need now and how much room you’ll want as your library grows. A drive used mainly to move a few large projects has different needs from one holding a broad game library or a second copy of a computer’s files.

  • Backups: Estimate the size of the files you intend to back up, then leave room for future additions. Keep another copy of important files and verify that your backup process completes and can restore what you need. Product specifications and warranty terms do not establish an archival lifetime.
  • Games: Consider how many games you want on the drive and check whether your console allows games to be stored or played externally. Storage and direct play are not always the same thing.
  • Large files: Match capacity to the size and number of files you move or work with. A faster advertised interface may help only if the host device supports it and the workload can use the bandwidth.

What size external SSD do you need?

There is no universal capacity that suits every reader. Samsung lists its T7, T7 Shield, and T9 in 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB capacities; its T5 EVO comes in 2TB, 4TB, and 8TB. SanDisk lists the Extreme Portable SSD in capacities from 500GB through 4TB. These are manufacturer-listed options, and availability may vary by model and region. See Samsung’s portable SSD buying guide and the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD product page.

Use your current data or game library as a baseline, then add capacity for growth. Avoid choosing solely by the largest number on a product page: unused capacity has little value if it pushes you beyond your budget, while a nearly full drive leaves less room for additions.

Will a faster SSD make transfers faster on your device?

Only if the host port can use the drive’s bandwidth. Samsung lists USB 3.2 Gen 2, rated at 10 Gbps, for the T7 and T7 Shield, and USB 3.2 Gen 2×2, rated at 20 Gbps, for the T9. Check your computer or console’s port specifications before paying extra for a higher-bandwidth model. A drive’s advertised maximum throughput is not a promise of the speed you will see copying files; actual results depend on the host and task.

For example, Samsung advertises the T7 Shield at up to 1,050 MB/s read and 1,000 MB/s write. Those are manufacturer-stated maximums, not an independent benchmark or a guarantee for every copy operation. The model’s interface is USB 3.2 Gen 2, according to Samsung’s product comparison guide and its 2022 product announcement.

Check compatibility before buying

Confirm the drive works with the computer, phone, or console you intend to use. Check the device maker’s current requirements, including supported connection, formatting or file-system requirements, and whether the cable supplied with the SSD fits your setup. General compatibility statements do not guarantee that every device or use case will work without setup.

For computers and other devices

Samsung lists T7 Shield compatibility with PCs, Macs, Android devices, and gaming consoles on its Canadian support page. SanDisk lists compatibility for the Extreme Portable SSD with USB-C devices and operating systems on its product page. Check the specific device and connection rather than assuming a broad compatibility list covers every configuration.

For consoles and game libraries

Console rules differ, and storing a game externally does not necessarily mean you can play it directly from that drive. Samsung says the T7 Shield is compatible with gaming consoles, but that broad statement is not a guarantee for every console or game type. SanDisk’s PlayStation-licensed model is described as able to store PS5 games for later transfer to PS5 internal storage; its page also says PlayStation PC games can be played directly from the drive on a PC. Read the SanDisk PlayStation SSD page and check the current platform requirements for your exact console and games.

Compare durability and warranty separately

Ruggedness claims describe specific manufacturer ratings; they do not make a drive indestructible or protect data from loss. Warranty length is a separate comparison point, and terms can depend on model and region.

Before relying on the drive for important files

  • Keep another copy of important files; do not treat one portable SSD as a permanent archive.
  • Verify that backups complete and that you can restore files from them.
  • Use the device maker’s current requirements to check compatibility and console behavior.
  • Read the warranty terms for the exact model and region. A warranty is not a substitute for another copy of your data.
