Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Choose an endpoint detection and response (EDR) solution by matching it to the devices you use, the response actions you need, and the people who will handle alerts—not by picking the longest feature list or the highest test score. First confirm operating-system coverage and licensing, then compare alert handling, integrations, support, and the real cost of any managed response service. Pilot finalists on representative devices before committing.
What EDR does—and what it does not do
EDR software observes activity on endpoints such as computers and servers, records behavior centrally, and helps a team detect, investigate, and respond to threats. The Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) notes that this telemetry can help identify incidents even when they do not match previously known indicators. Typical response capabilities include investigating activity across multiple computers and isolating a compromised device. ASD’s EDR guidance also emphasizes useful telemetry, integration, search, vendor support, and limiting false-positive burden.
EDR is focused on endpoints. Network detection and response (NDR) focuses on network traffic; extended detection and response (XDR) combines data from multiple security layers. These terms describe different scopes, not a guarantee that one category or product will provide better protection. SentinelOne’s terminology explainer is vendor-authored, so treat it as a definition rather than independent product evaluation.
Start with your devices and operating systems
Make an inventory before comparing vendors. Count each computer, server, and mobile device that needs protection, and record its operating system and version. Include remote and business-critical devices; a product that fits most of the fleet may still leave an important platform uncovered.

- Ask separately about server protection, mobile-device coverage, and any licensing required for them.
Microsoft lists Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS among the platforms supported by Defender for Endpoint, but the applicable plan and platform documentation determine which capabilities are available. Review Microsoft’s Defender for Endpoint overview and verify the exact combination you need.
Check whether the response workflow fits your team
Detection is only useful if someone can make sense of an alert and act on it. Ask each provider to show a real alert from initial detection through investigation, containment, recovery, and reporting. Establish which actions can be automated, which require an administrator or analyst, and what approvals or licenses are needed to isolate a device.
Decide who owns the work before deployment:
- Who receives alerts, and how quickly are they reviewed?
- Who investigates, decides whether an alert is genuine, and can isolate a device?
- Who is available outside business hours, and who can authorize disruptive response actions?
- What happens if the primary contact is unavailable or the incident affects that person’s own device?
If your business cannot reliably staff those responsibilities, compare EDR with managed detection and response (MDR) or another managed service. Get the scope in writing: monitoring hours, escalation process, response authority, incident assistance, and what remains your responsibility. MDR and incident-response availability varies across products; AV-Comparatives’ summer 2025 endpoint prevention and response feature list can help you form questions, but does not replace checking the proposed service terms.

Useful detection must also be manageable. ASD advises configuring EDR to balance identifying malware against the disruption false positives can cause for users and the incident-response team. Ask how alerts are prioritized and tuned, and during a pilot track how many require investigation and whether routine business activity triggers them.

Before selecting a product, ask about onboarding, policy configuration, update practices, technical support access, and recovery if a response action disrupts a device. Microsoft’s Defender for Business documentation covers setup, onboarding, maintenance, and reporting, while its pilot and deployment guidance describes a staged rollout. ASD also recommends considering vendor maturity, responsiveness, and ability to scale with your needs.
Compare plans and total cost, not just the product name
Calculate the recurring cost for the same device and user counts across finalists. Include the EDR plan, any required server or platform licenses, management or response service, and add-ons needed for the features you expect to use. Check existing entitlements before buying a separate subscription, and verify the current quote, contract minimums, geography-specific terms, and renewal conditions directly with the vendor.

Use independent tests carefully
Independent test results can inform a shortlist, but first check what was tested, when, and against which scenarios. SE Labs’ June 2025 small-business endpoint protection report evaluated products including Sophos Intercept X, Microsoft Defender Antivirus (enterprise), Bitdefender Small Office Security, Kaspersky Small Office Security, and Webroot SecureAnywhere Endpoint Protection.
In that specific test, SE Labs reported 100% protection accuracy for Sophos Intercept X and Kaspersky Small Office Security, and 99% for Microsoft Defender Antivirus (enterprise) and Bitdefender Small Office Security. Those scores describe the report’s tested protection scenarios; they are not guarantees for future versions or evidence of equivalent performance in EDR investigation, managed response, or day-to-day service.
Feature matrices have similar limits. AV-Comparatives’ summer 2025 list includes dimensions such as MDR availability, incident response, endpoint response tools, and support. Use it to identify questions for vendors, then verify current capabilities and service commitments in your own evaluation. Neither a feature listing nor a test score substitutes for a business-specific pilot.

Run a practical pilot before rollout
- Inventory your environment. Record device counts, operating systems and versions, business-critical systems, remote-work needs, and current security licenses.
- Shortlist for fit. Remove options that do not support your platforms, match your management approach, or provide a workable alert-response owner.
- Request a workflow demonstration. Have each vendor show an alert moving through investigation, containment, recovery, and reporting. Ask what requires your staff’s approval or action.
- Test representative devices and workflows. Include ordinary business activity and the platforms most important to your operations. Track false positives, missed workflow needs, support responsiveness, resource impact, and the time common response tasks take.
- Review terms and controls. Confirm data handling and retention, role permissions, contract scope, offboarding, and incident assistance in writing.
- Compare equivalent quotes. Use the same device count, service hours, and response scope for each finalist so that a lower headline price is not hiding a narrower service.
This staged evaluation aligns with Microsoft’s documented pilot workflow and ASD’s advice to assess integration, scalability, support, and false positives.
Examples to investigate, not a universal ranking
Defender for Business is one candidate to examine if its platform coverage, licensing, and workflow suit your organization. Microsoft’s materials position it for small and medium-sized businesses and document onboarding, setup, policy configuration, maintenance, and reporting. A Microsoft 365 bundle may affect fit and cost, but it does not remove the need to verify entitlements, plan capabilities, and response ownership.
Other products appear in independent endpoint-protection tests and feature lists, but those sources answer different questions. Use test reports to understand tested protection scenarios and feature matrices to guide vendor questions; use your pilot and written service terms to decide whether the complete solution fits your business.
