For water you fill yourself, choose a container intended for drinking water and documented as FDA-approved food-grade storage. Size it to your household’s needs, then clean, sanitize, label, and store it correctly. A container helps protect clean water from contamination; it does not make unsafe water safe. The CDC says unopened commercially bottled water is the safest and most reliable emergency supply.
Choose a container made for drinking water
Look for explicit food-grade status and an intended use that includes drinking-water storage. The CDC explains that “FDA-approved food-grade storage containers will not transfer toxic substances into the water.” If a container’s status is unclear, contact its manufacturer rather than inferring suitability from its appearance or material. Food-grade containers may be available through camping or surplus-supply stores. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), “How to Create an Emergency Water Supply,” June 27, 2025.
If you cannot obtain a food-grade container, CDC’s emergency guidance recommends a tightly closing, durable container that will not break like glass. Prefer a narrow opening that lets you pour without putting hands or objects inside. Never reuse a container that held toxic chemicals, including pesticides, petroleum products, or bleach. These fallback features do not establish that every such container is suitable for long-term water storage.
Work out how much water your household needs
Choose capacity only after estimating demand. CDC advises storing at least 1 gallon per person per day for 3 days and recommends trying for a 2-week supply if possible. Needs may be higher in hot climates and for pregnant people, people who are sick, and pets. These figures are planning guidance, not a guarantee that the same amount will suit every household.

Divide your planned total across containers you can fill, move, and dispense safely. Several manageable containers can be easier to handle than one large vessel, while more containers require more filling, cleaning, labeling, and monitoring. CDC’s broader safe-water-storage guidance mentions 20 liters as a standard container volume, but that is a general safe-storage design point—not a required size for household emergency water. CDC, “Safe Water Storage,” April 22, 2024.
Compare containers by practical features
| What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Food-grade documentation and intended use | Provides evidence that the container is intended for drinking-water storage; contact the manufacturer if its status is uncertain. |
| Capacity | Should match the household’s planned supply while remaining practical to fill, carry, and dispense. |
| Closure | A tight-fitting lid helps protect the water from contamination during storage. |
| Material and durability | Choose durable construction that will not break like glass; never use a container that held toxic chemicals. |
| Opening and dispensing | A narrow opening reduces the chance of hands or objects entering the water. Consider whether you can pour or draw water without contaminating it. |
| Handling and upkeep | Consider the effort needed to fill, clean, sanitize, carry, and use each container. CDC’s broader guidance notes that a comfortable handle can help with handling. |
CDC’s broader safe-storage guidance discusses durable plastic, ceramic, or metal, a closable 5–8 cm opening, and a narrow neck as useful design features. Treat these as general safe-storage considerations, not as proof that a particular container is food-grade or as emergency-supply requirements.

- Coat the interior: Cover and shake the container so the solution reaches every inside surface.
- Wait and empty: Leave the solution in contact with the surfaces for at least 30 seconds, then pour it out.
- Air-dry: Let the empty container air-dry.
- Fill and close: Fill with clean water and secure the lid tightly.
This process prepares a clean container; it does not treat water that may be contaminated. Follow CDC’s full emergency-water instructions for any water-treatment question. CDC emergency water-supply guidance.
Label and store the water correctly
- Mark the container “drinking water” and write the storage date on it.
- Keep it in a cool place, between 50°F and 70°F, away from direct sunlight.
- Keep it away from toxic substances such as gasoline and pesticides.
- Replace home-filled water every 6 months. For commercially bottled water, follow the expiration date on the bottle.
These storage and replacement directions are from the CDC’s emergency water-supply guidance dated June 27, 2025: How to Create an Emergency Water Supply.

Keep water clean when drawing it
Use a clean scoop or other clean device each time you take water out. Do not touch the water or the inside of the container with your hands. A container that was clean when filled can still be contaminated through careless handling during use.
