Choose an electromagnetic brake by first deciding what the machine must do when power is lost, then sizing the brake for its real job: holding a stopped load, stopping a moving load, or both. A holding-torque figure alone does not prove that a brake can repeatedly stop a moving load. Selection also depends on inertia, stopping time, cycle rate, heat, electrical supply and mechanical fit.
1. Decide what the brake must do when power disappears
Start with the required behavior during loss of electrical power. A spring-applied, power-off brake engages when its coil loses power. A power-on brake engages when energized. These are different failure behaviors, not interchangeable product labels.
For a load that must remain held when power is removed, a power-off design is often the relevant architecture. But the brake is only one part of the machine’s safety design: assess the actual hazard, control system and any separate service brake or controlled deceleration needed. Neri Motori describes electromagnetic brake operation and air-gap requirements in its brake documentation; Indian Precision Engineers lists both power-off and power-on brake types in its product range.
2. Establish whether the job is holding, stopping, or both
A static holding brake resists movement after the load has stopped. A dynamic brake absorbs energy to decelerate a moving load. If the machine needs both functions, verify both separately rather than assuming one torque rating covers them.

Inertia Dynamics’ selection document says its brakes are rated by static torque and calls for calculating dynamic torque for proper sizing. Its application-assistance form also asks whether the application is stopping or holding and requests load inertia. That is why the nameplate or catalog holding value cannot, by itself, establish suitability for dynamic stopping.
3. Collect the application data before comparing torque ratings
Gather the machine details that determine the actual demand. In particular, include the load and drive train, not just the motor’s rated torque.
- Required holding torque and any external load torque.
- Motor and reflected load inertia, including gearing and other rotating components.
- Operating speed, direction, orientation and desired stopping time or stop profile.
- How often the brake will stop the machine, and whether stops are routine or occasional emergency events.
- Whether the brake must hold a gravity load, operate while slipping, or work alongside another brake or control method.
- Available coil voltage, power supply or rectifier arrangement, switching method and control requirements.
- Mounting face, shaft or hub dimensions, available envelope and expected service access.
The Inertia Dynamics application-assistance sheet explicitly requests the stopping-versus-holding use and load inertia. If a key value is unknown, identify how it will be measured or ask the brake supplier to help establish it; do not replace missing application data with an assumed model.

4. Size for the required holding and stopping duty
For holding at rest
Compare the actual static load torque with the manufacturer’s specified holding torque, accounting for the machine’s application requirements and uncertainty. State what any margin is intended to cover—for example, variation in load or measurement—rather than adding an unexplained generic factor.

Calculate the deceleration torque needed for the complete rotating inertia and the required stop profile. Then confirm with the manufacturer that the exact brake can deliver that dynamic duty. The required torque depends on the load and stopping conditions; motor torque alone is not a reliable shortcut for brake sizing.
KEB UK’s brake-selection guidance cautions against repeatedly stacking margins and notes that an oversized dynamic brake can increase cost and impair dynamic behavior. A larger catalog torque is not automatically a safer or better choice.

5. Check heat and operating cycle
Every dynamic stop makes the friction surfaces absorb energy as heat. Record stops per hour and, where available, energy per stop; also describe any continuous slipping or unusually frequent cycling. Ask the manufacturer to check the selected model’s permitted thermal duty, not just its peak torque.
Routine stops and occasional emergency stops may impose different operating demands. Make clear which is expected in normal operation and how often emergency stops may occur. KEB UK’s selection guidance identifies operating cycle and heating on stop/start duties as selection considerations; the allowable duty remains model-specific.
6. Confirm electrical and mechanical compatibility
Before ordering, check the exact model documentation for the rated coil voltage and required supply or rectifier, engagement and release behavior, speed limit, mounting interface, shaft or hub fit, and air-gap range. Confirm that the specified response and control circuit fit the machine’s stopping strategy.

- Type: Brushed gear reduction
- Output speed: 120 Rpm / 75 Rpm
- Shaft: diameter 17mm, length 44mm---- Net weight: 3.5 KG
Air gap is a service condition, not a cosmetic dimension: Neri Motori warns that an air gap outside its indicated limits can impair operation. Use the selected brake’s own limits and maintenance instructions rather than applying a value from another model.
Product figures must be read as supplier- and model-specific. For example, Indian Precision Engineers states a standard 24 V DC coil and a 2–1500 Nm range for its own offering; those figures are not universal electromagnetic-brake specifications. Confirm the exact model’s current data and availability with the supplier.

Once the application is defined, compare actual candidate models against the same requirements. Do not rank brands from generic catalog ranges when the application and model-level data are not established.

8. Get application confirmation for demanding cases
For gravity loads, personnel hazards, emergency stops, frequent dynamic duty or uncertain inputs, send the brake manufacturer the application data and request confirmation for the exact model. Ask specifically about holding torque, dynamic stopping capability, energy per stop, thermal duty, stopping time, wear and adjustment intervals, and required control circuit. The manufacturer needs the real application to validate the choice; there is no universal model or safety factor that can be selected from the topic alone.
Buying a brake
A relevant product category to search is “24V DC spring-applied electromagnetic brake,” but a marketplace title does not establish that a particular unit is suitable. For industrial machinery, use model-specific engineering data and a brake supplier who can review the load, duty and mounting details. Indian Precision Engineers invites specification-based inquiries for its electromagnetic-brake offering; verify the precise configuration and current availability directly with the supplier.
