Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Your gaming PC can affect your electricity costs, but it does not determine which tariff is cheapest. Compare tariffs using your household’s expected annual electricity use, including the unit rate, daily standing charge, contract terms and any time bands. Then estimate the PC’s share using its average power draw during real use—not the maximum wattage printed on its power supply.
What to compare when choosing a tariff
Build the comparison around your whole home’s expected use. A tariff’s unit rate is the price for each kilowatt-hour (kWh); its standing charge is a daily fee that applies even if you use no electricity. Ofgem explains these components in its guidance on how an electricity or gas bill is calculated.
- Total estimated cost: Compare the unit charges for the same annual household consumption profile and add the standing charge for the year.
- Rate structure: Check whether the tariff has one electricity rate or multiple time-based rates. For a multi-rate tariff, compare every time band, including the expensive periods.
- Contract terms: Check whether the tariff is fixed or variable, how long it lasts, and whether exit conditions or fees apply. Use the terms in the live offer.
- Eligibility and meter: Confirm any meter requirements, including whether the particular time-of-use offer requires a smart meter.
- Your circumstances: Rates shown to you depend on factors such as region, payment method and meter type. Compare offers using your own details rather than treating a national average as a quote. Ofgem explains rate structures and publishes regional figures on its price-cap rates and standing charges page.
Estimate what your gaming PC costs to run
Use the PC’s average power draw during representative sessions. A power supply’s rated wattage describes its capacity, not the amount the computer continuously draws from the wall. If you want the estimate to include a monitor or other peripherals, measure or estimate those separately and add them.
- Find the average power draw in watts during normal gaming and, if relevant, other typical activities. A plug-in energy monitor can measure consumption at the socket; a practical estimation guide from GPUsed discusses this method.
- Convert watts to kilowatts by dividing by 1,000.
- Multiply the kilowatts by the hours used to get the energy consumed in kWh. For example, 400 W used for 3 hours is 0.4 kW × 3 = 1.2 kWh.
- Multiply those kWh by the tariff’s unit rate to estimate the usage cost for that session. Scale the result to your actual gaming schedule if you want a weekly or annual estimate.
This estimates the PC’s variable energy cost, not the full household bill. Compare standing charges as a whole-house cost rather than assigning the entire daily charge to the gaming PC. The GPUsed guide is an informational commercial source, not an independent laboratory test; it does not establish a universal typical gaming-PC draw or annual cost.

When a time-of-use tariff may—or may not—help
A multi-rate tariff charges different prices at different times. Its value depends on when your household uses electricity, not just on whether you own a gaming PC. Compare the actual time bands and rates with your gaming schedule and other household use.
- If you game mainly during expensive peak hours, an off-peak rate at other times may not compensate for the higher rate when you play.
- If you can shift substantial household use into cheaper periods, a time-of-use tariff may be worth comparing against single-rate offers.
These are conditional examples, not a guaranteed saving. The tariff’s full cost for your consumption profile must beat the alternatives.

How to use the price cap figures
Ofgem’s average default-tariff electricity figures for Direct Debit customers in England, Scotland and Wales for 1 October to 31 December 2026 are 26.32 pence per kWh and 54.83 pence per day for the standing charge. These are averages, not a quote: actual regional rates and payment arrangements differ. Ofgem also notes that costs cannot be compared directly with earlier periods because electricity VAT treatment changes from 1 October 2026. Check the current regional figures and the rates in your supplier’s offer.
For the same quarter, Ofgem gives an average price-cap level of £1,723 per year for a typical household using electricity and gas and paying by Direct Debit. That is a typical-use illustration, not a forecast for a household with a gaming PC. The price cap limits unit rates and standing charges for qualifying default tariffs; it does not cap the total bill, which rises with consumption. Fixed tariffs are outside the cap. See Ofgem’s explanation of the energy price cap.

- AUTOMATICALLY ALARM: When your power supply test value is normal range, the Power Supply Tester would issue a buzzer alarm, Easy to Know.
- WITH LED DISPLAY: We have developed a portable computer power tester for the power supply market that can judge the quality of the power supply. It has LCD display intuitive and accurate display voltage (+/ 0.01V), automatic fault alarm, complete test interface, small and beautiful appearance, and more test functions. It is your best choice and helper to quickly detect PC power.
- EASY TO USE: This power tester only needs to be connected to the power supply ATX connector to easily and intuitively know whether the output of each power supply is normal. It can detect ATX, BTX, ITX, TFX computer power supply, and can display various voltage and PG values in LCD screen to quickly detect the performance of computer power supply.
- PRACTICAL & CONVENIENCE: Small and practical power tester. Now the number of power output groups is increasing. As long as one of them has problem, the hardware of the computer system may work abnormally or even burn out. To measure whether the output voltage output of the power supply is stable, the player usually uses a multimeter. But for the average user is still a little troublesome.
- NOTE: It can also measure the output wire P4/P6/P8/SATA/IDE, and the external DIE/SATA/P6/P8 is the light display, there is no LCD voltage. There is LCD voltage display only when connecting to the 24pin or 20pin.
