Choose a kettle for the amount of water you usually heat, not just its advertised maximum. Check its minimum fill for single cups, decide whether you regularly need water below boiling, and verify that it switches off automatically and has boil-dry protection. Then compare how safely and comfortably it fills, pours, and cleans.
What capacity should you choose?
Start with the quantity you make most often. A large kettle can suit several people, but its minimum-fill requirement may make it inconvenient when you want only one cup. Check both the maximum capacity and the minimum water line before buying.
Haier recommends 1.7 L for family use and 1.3 L for smaller households as examples for its own models; these are manufacturer recommendations, not universal capacity rules. Consider how many cups you typically make at once and whether the minimum fill lets you heat that amount without exceeding it.
Do you need variable temperature control?
A basic kettle heats water to a boil. A variable-temperature model lets you choose a lower target, which is useful if you regularly prepare drinks that call for water below boiling. If you mainly boil water for foods or drinks that use boiling water, the extra controls may not add much value.

Haier suggests 70–80 °C for green, white, and matcha tea, and 90–96 °C for filter coffee. Treat these as that manufacturer’s guidance, not fixed requirements for every tea, coffee, or recipe.
A display shows the selected or reported temperature; it does not prove the water reached that temperature accurately. Consumer NZ says its laboratory tests found temperature settings were not always accurate. If precise repeatability matters, look for independent test results for the particular model rather than relying on the display alone.

Which safety features should you check?
Automatic shut-off stops heating after the kettle boils, while boil-dry protection is intended to prevent operation when there is too little or no water. Electrical Safety First states: “Your kettle should have auto shut-off or ‘boil-dry protection’.” Check that the model provides these protections and follow its instructions for filling and use.
Also consider whether the lid closes securely, whether the exterior becomes hot, and where the cord sits while the kettle is in use. Consumer NZ notes that steel sides and lids can become very hot, while lightweight plastic models tend to stay cooler to the touch. That is a material-related consideration, not a guarantee about any individual kettle.

Electrical Safety First advises buying from a reputable retailer, following the manufacturer’s instructions, checking plugs, sockets, and cables for damage, keeping the kettle away from liquids, and stopping use if it is cracked or damaged. Its advice to ensure a UK 3-pin plug and fuse applies to UK buyers; check the electrical plug and supply requirements for your own location.

If you can inspect a kettle in person, check whether the water-level markings are easy to see and whether the lid opens far enough for filling and cleaning. Think about the weight when full, grip, balance, and whether the spout gives you control when pouring. A kettle that is awkward to fill or pour may be frustrating even if its capacity and features look right on paper.

- Water visibility: Can you see the level clearly while filling, and does the scale show useful increments?
- Lid and filling: Is the lid easy to open and secure when closed? Is there enough access to clean the interior?
- Pouring: Does the handle feel stable, and can you direct the stream without awkward tilting?
- Scale management: Check whether the kettle has a removable limescale filter and whether it can be cleaned or replaced. This matters more where hard water causes scale buildup.
- Materials: Compare the exterior material and touch surfaces, particularly if the kettle will be used where accidental contact is likely.
How do the main kettle types compare?

What should you check before buying?
- Match capacity to your routine. Estimate how much water you commonly heat, then check both maximum capacity and minimum fill.
- Choose the controls you will use. Pay for variable-temperature control when lower temperatures are a regular need, not simply because a display looks useful.
- Verify safety protections. Confirm automatic shut-off and boil-dry protection in the model’s specifications and instructions.
- Assess accuracy if it matters. Seek independent results for that model; a temperature setting alone is not evidence of accuracy.
- Check fit and upkeep. Review pouring, water-level visibility, lid operation, cleaning access, limescale filtration, exterior heat, and local electrical compatibility.
